The Humanity Club

Let's go all Detective Conan on this case!

Let's go all Detective Conan on this case!

Jan 05, 2022

"Hey... how did it end up like this?" Saki Yamamoto whined to me.

I could only sigh, peering down at our now muddy clothes. "It's your fault for wanting to take on that request," I said.

She shook her head with a defensive pout. "No! It's your fault for trying to take the 'easy way' out!"

I flinched for a moment before firmly crossing my arms. "I was forced into doing this so it's understandable."

Yup... Me, Miyuki Hoshino, was actually doing something productive... I sighed dejectedly.

This was one heck of a day.

Flashback: Yesterday in the Clubroom...

.

"Ugh, I'm hungry..." I groaned, clutching my grumbling stomach.

"How? You just ate all our snacks!" Hiro cried.

I tilted my head back in his direction. In his usual seat on the sofa, magazine bunched in his hand and snapback positioned lopsidedly on his head, Hiro's eyes were narrowed into a fierce scowl. It was nothing new, really, but it still succeeded in causing me to sigh.

"They were just sitting there, waiting to be eaten," I said in defence. "And besides, food is needed for a growing girl such as myself."

"I don't think you'll grow anymore at your age."

I glared at him for a moment then sarcastically scoffed, "Should someone as short as yourself really be critiquing me?"

"Shut up! I'm taller than you!"

"Keep it down over there! I come here for peace and quiet!" Yuji called over to us.

"How is this place quiet?" I demanded. "I wish it was. Just watch, someone will burst through the doors any minute now, begging for help which we actually have to agree to," I sneered, and just as if the world had read my mind, the door burst open, revealing a familiar brunette.

"The great Saki Yamamoto has arrived!" the girl announced, as she did every day. I groaned, flopping down onto the cough. Kill me now.

I couldn't watch anime because my phone was dead, I forgot my favourite manga at the moment Oresama Teacher at home, and I didn't even have any snacks to quench my insatiable hunger.

Ugh... I really want to read about Hayasaka some more~ Today really sucked...

Oh wait, maybe Saki had something.

"Do you have food?" I called over to her.

She shook her head with a smile. "Nope, I ate all of my snacks on the way here." Her response invoked a groan from my mouth. "But," she went on anyway, "I do have something better!"

"I don't care anymore. Leave me alone," I murmured, burying my face into the sofa. What could be better than food? Other than anime, of course.

"You're so mean, Mi-chan! But I'll disregard your negativity for today! I've got someone you'll all be interested in!" Saki grinned at once, twirling around to face the doorway. "Come on in, Rin-chan!"

A girl with wavy brown hair entered the clubroom. All eyes curiously travelled over to this middle schooler all the while I died a little on the inside. Oh great, so she didn't get the thought of bringing extra food, but instead settled for more work for us to do.

Once again, I was in awe to how idiotic everyone's way of thought worked in this club.

"What would you like at the Humanity Club? We'll help you as long as the request is sincere!" Wannabe pronounced, appearing out of seemingly nowhere and putting on a seductive smile.

The girl—Rin, was it?—took one glance at this blond senior and squealed so loudly the reverberations shook me off the couch.

"Kazuya-sama! Th-this is your club? I'm sorry for disturbing you!" she exclaimed, racing up to him.

Wincing at the pain of falling flat on my face, I rolled off the floor and glowered up at the girl.

"It's not a problem at all. The Humanity Club helps out anyone in need," Wannabe said with a charming smile.

Rin stared at him with dramatic stars in her eyes, hands bunched together in awe. She dreamily sighed, "Kazuya-sama...!"

I couldn't help but fight a gag as she continued to fawn over him. What did she find so attractive about him? This is why I didn't get regular girls.

I'd lived my entire life without a "crush" because anime characters sufficed all my needs. Even if Wannabe had similarities to Tamaki Suoh, he was still a 3-D male. Nothing special.

"Anyway... I want you to help me!" Rin announced after another few seconds of ogling. "The truth is, lately, I've been getting love letters!"

"Love letters?" Wannabe echoed.

Rin nodded. "If they were regular love letters, it would be alright, but these love letters are strange. I've been receiving them for a couple months now and each time I do they're always sure to get weirder and weirder each time. Creepily so! That's why I want to be able to find the person who's sending them and talk to them!"

"Tracking down love letters? That's pretty complicated," Hinata stated, pursing his lips in thought.

"I know," Hiro agreed, tilting back and forth on his chair. "I mean, if a guy wants to ask a girl out they should just come right out and say it."

"Wait! Wait! Doesn't this mean we'll be able to play the part of detectives?" Saki exclaimed, jumping up and down.

Detectives...? I thought, scoffing. Haha, there's no way Saki could ever up Detective Conan. Seriously, that guy's amazing.

"Still... Do you expect us to study the whole incident?" Wannabe inquired.

Rin averted eye-contact. "I have tried to find the culprit myself but had no luck so my friends suggested I try here. Also, I'm going to be really busy with clubs this week so I was hoping maybe you guys would be kind enough to..." Unable to find the words to finish her sentence, she looked up pleadingly. It spoke volumes.

"I don't know," Wannabe said, and paused. "If you're willing to take charge, the Humanity Club will surely help out. But if we are to solve this issue ourselves..."

My jaw dropped at the unexpected development. Even Wannabe turned down requests? My eyes grew wide. The guy was usually so hyped up and excited about these kinds of things so I thought for sure...

"Is that a no?" Rin asked, disappointment slipping into her town.

Wannabe smiled wistfully in response. "I'm sorry, Rin-chan, but we'll have to decline. But if this is a thing with a stalker, try talking to the principal or a trusted teacher. Or your friends can help you catch him."

With a forced smile, Rin bobbed her head up and down. "I understand. Thank you, Kazuya-sama. I will try that."

Bowing politely, she excused herself at that. After her departure, a deafening silence filled the air.

"I feel bad for Rin-chan though... She asked me for her help and I was pretty sure our club could help..." Saki murmured to herself. Nobody answered her. Noticing this, she started again, "This is the Humanity Club—a club existing for the purpose of assisting the good of humanity; those in need. And Rin-chan needs a helping hand!"

"But it's love letters we're talking about. How are you supposed to find the culprit when the girl herself can't even figure it out?" Yuji spoke up with a raised eyebrow.

Saki made a face. "I can do it!" she insisted. "Whenever I get one I always can figure out who exactly the sender is without them having to tell me!" She turned to Wannabe, pushing out her lower lip. "Can't I just help her?"

Wannabe stiffened up. "It's not like I don't want to," he told her. "But, the last time we did something similar to this, Suzuki-sensei made me take responsibility and clean the cafeteria for a week."

"Oh yeah." Hiro winced at the memory, and Wananbe nodded depressively.

"So what?" I snorted. "I didn't do my assignment that was due a week before and she gave me detention for the month plus classroom duty."

I heard someone whistle from the group.

"Still! Can I please help?" Saki said. "It'll just be an upperclassman helping out a fellow student! And I'll even do it undercover if I have to!"

"Hmm... I do think Saki could do it," Hinata commented.

Wannabe shook his head in defeat. "Fine, fine! But you'll do it yourself! It's your mission!"

"Yes!" she cheered, doing a little jig. "Hey, can Mi-chan help me too?"

I immediately flung upright and cried, "What? Why me? I didn't even say anything this entire time!"

"Because I love Mi-chan!" she cooed, glomping me into a hug.

"Saki... There is no way I'm doing this! I hate helping others and I hate love-coms, clichés, whatever!"

I shoved her off away from me and she pouted.

"Please! I'll do most of the work! I just want an assistant to keep me company! The Watson to my Sherlock!"

"What about if Suzuki-sensei catches us?" I pointed out. I did not want to get into more trouble. She was still on my back for that essay, and I couldn't afford being on her bad side any longer.

Saki smiled reassuringly, grasping my hands in hers. "Then I'll tell her that it was my idea! Please!"

End of Flashback: Back to Regular Time...

We'd been searching for the culprit ever since, only to find nothing but a bunch of false leads and failures. We had been close to catching somebody who seemed like him but only ended up accidentally falling into the flower beds, causing us to get all dirty and muddy...

Even though I wanted to, with everything going the way that it was, there was no way I could ever say "Let's go all Detective Conan on this case!" This wasn't getting anywhere at all.

"The culprit is someone who has been stalking her since the beginning of the year...and puts the letters in her locker when nobody's around," Saki said, flopping down on the bench in the courtyard. She started reading over the letters that Rin had given to us for analysis. "And these letters are getting pretty stalkerish, too," she said.

The first one read:

'I have always found you admirable and kind. That is why...I have come to love you. Xoxo'

And:

'I watch you from afar and you only seem to get more and more beautiful. When can I meet you? Xoxoxo'

And the creepiest:

'The way you half-laugh with your friends and that seal sound you make when you yawn. The way you also seem to scream when you see cats is also very cute! I love you so much that I know every quirk about you! Xoxoxoxo'

She sighed and put them away. "Seriously a creep."

"Yamamoto-san! Hoshino-san! Have you found anything yet?" Rin Fugiwara ran up to us from across the courtyard.

Saki rose to her feet and went to explain what happened to us. I wasn't really a part of the conversation so I discreetly turned my attention towards the group of friends Rin had been walking with a few seconds prior. I saw them laughing away and sending Rin an evil look, devilish smirks painting their faces.

"Thank you! I will try to help out myself!" Rin bid us—or just really Saki—one last bow and left to join her friends who seemed to smile brighter when she approached them. It was obvious it was fake.

"Rin-chan has a lot of cute friends!" Saki gushed, standing up from the bench.

I yawned, spinning around to go. "Really? Let's just end this and go home already! I'm starving!"

"Oh, wait for me!" she called, running over to join me.

Miyuki Hoshino has loved anime and manga for as long as she can remember. Deeply burrowed in 2D fantasies like any fangirl, she's a firm believer that it's all she needs to lead a happy life. Though, when she's threatened by her homeroom teacher to join a volunteer club as punishment for failing her classes, she is left with no choice but to interact with the existing members. There, Miyuki is introduced to the volatile president Kazuya, the hot-tempered Hiro, the lazy to the bone Yuji, the easy-breezy Hinata, and the bubbly, I-want-to-be-friends-with-everyone Saki.

All Miyuki wants is to return to her peaceful hermit life, which isn't easy when the universe keeps forcing her to socialize with these eccentric club members who continuously drag her into their shenanigans.

To make matters worse, multiple of these 3D boys take a liking to her. Is it possible for Miyuki to get through high school in one piece after all?
