Chapter 9: Tutoring and Train Rides

Chapter 9: Tutoring and Train Rides

Jan 06, 2022

September 14, 2021

Deceitfully beautiful is the best way to describe Vincent College. Since it’s located in Manhattan, Vincent College doesn’t have a campus. Instead, it has six large modern-style buildings with interconnecting bridges between the four buildings. When a college has more than 25,000 students and staff, cleanliness is always an issue; at least this semester, they finally installed more hand sanitizer pumps. Overall, it’s a good college, especially since they were the only ones that gave me a full ride.

My class ended early, so I was able to find an unoccupied study table in the library and get settled. I then texted Eloise to tell her where I was in the library since Vincent College library has multiple floors. While waiting, I noticed how the library was semi-empty, so we wouldn’t have to talk super loud to hear each other. I then started to play a game on my phone while I waited for her to arrive.

“Hey, sorry I am a little late; my professor went overtime,” Eloise said as she took the sheet in front of me and took out her class notes.

“It is okay. It was only like five minutes; why don’t you let me take a look at your notes, and then we can start reviewing what you are confused about.”

“Okay,” she said a bit hesitantly.

I then took a look at her notes and saw that they were sparse. So, I gave plenty of examples while going over some key points, which did the trick, as she was able to grasp the material within an hour. I was almost done testing her when I heard an email notification.

“Oh,” I exclaimed after reading it.

“What’s the matter?” Eloise inquired.

“My last class was canceled, so I am done for the day. Do you have any other questions?”

“No.”

We both packed up our belongings and exited the library. When I noticed that we were heading in the same direction, I inquired, and it turned out that we both live in Queens and take the same trains. We live in different neighborhoods, though; while I live in Oakridge, Eloise lives in Bocote Hills.

After grabbing some seats, we didn’t say anything to each until I couldn’t stand the awkwardness and asked her how many classes, she was taking this semester.

“Five, most of them are for the common core requirements. What about you?”

“Five, all of them are for my majors. I finished all the requirements when I was a sophomore.

“Wow, you did all the requirements first, so you can focus on your majors?

“Yeah, I wasn’t really sure what would be a good fit for me, so I just focused on fulfilling the requirements during my first two years.”

“Has there been a class that you found super hard?”

“Hmm, I feel like all classes cause you to stress. But my top three classes that caused me extreme stress were Intro to Linguistics, Math 100, and Pre-Chemistry. What about you?

“I always hate having to write essays or reading books for classes. I have always preferred subjects such as math, marketing, and statistics.”

“That’s cool.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, to each their own.”

We then switched trains, and once we were settled again, Eloise turned to me and told me what I like to do.

I slightly shrugged and then told her I liked reading, skateboarding, and origami.

Eloise then stared at me and looked at the opal necklace I was wearing. "That necklace is really pretty, where did you get it?"

"Oh, it was my grandma's."

"Are you really close?"

"Yeah, we were. I was her favorite grandchild."

"Did she pass?" Eloise asked hesitantly.

"Yeah, it has been a couple of years."

"I am sorry."

I told her it was okay and decided to change the subject. “What other shows do you like to watch besides Psych?”

“Some of the ones I am currently watching are Nancy Drew, Roswell: New Mexico, and Poisionbane. Then I also watch reruns of shows like 2 Broke Girls and cartoons like Regular Show and Camp Camp. What about you?”

“There are a lot of shows I like; some of them are Wynonna Earp, Locke and Key, Gilmore Girls, Love Life, and The White Lotus. I think I have seen some episodes of Camp Camp. Is it that show where the kids are cursing?”

“Yeah, I hope that it gets renewed for a fifth season.”

We then continued our discussion by talking about tv shows we gave up watching. One of them was a show that had a decent first season but went off the rails but has managed to get renewed for a six-season, and the other is one that was initially promising, but then it got derailed and became more about the protagonist being obsessed with her boyfriend them anything else. Our talk came to a stop when we reached my stop. I said goodbye to Eloise who still had three more stops to go and walked out of the station, and started to make my way home.

With the continuing pandemic, emotions such as stress, fear, and uncertainty have only amplified. Just ask Minerva Ramirez, an introverted fourth-year college student who is returning to in-person classes for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Unfortunately, her stress triples when she finds out that she was assigned to a large group for a project worth 35% percent of her grade for one of her courses. Will it be as dreadful as she assumes, or is she in for a surprise?

Warning: Beware this novel will contain mature language and go into mature/serious topics. I will put a warning at the beginning of each mature chapter.
