Zagiilios Chronicles: Tale of the Dragon God

The Affinity Ritual

The Affinity Ritual

Jan 06, 2022

30 years of my life pass by without much happening other than my mother starting to teach me with magic around the time that I was 25. That day was very special to me as it was the day that I fell in love with all of the possibilities that could be achieved using magic. It felt right it felt like a part of me that I had ignored for so long was finally now within my grasp the first time that I used it. The day started simply what does smell of breakfast and my father gently nudging me awake. His hand on my shoulder he told me, "Rise and shine. Breakfast is almost ready and you need to prepare for the day. Your mother has plans for the two of you today and she wanted me to come and get you up."

I yawned and stretched before slowly getting out of my small bed, "Okay papa." I walked into the bathroom and got onto the step stool that my father had for me so that I could reach the sink properly. Like I used to in my old life I brushed my teeth, washed up, and changed into clean clothes. My parents were always surprised by the fact I seem to be a lot more mature for my age as they still expect me to barely know how to speak and definitely not how to read or do many of these things on my own without their systems but I guess that also has to deal with the fact I still refuse to tell them that I've been reincarnated and that realistically I've been through this already in a past life.

I immediately go downstairs after finishing getting ready for the day and my mother has just finished setting the table for breakfast. We are having eggs and bacon with a side of grilled cheese and rice. The traditional breakfast out here always served with either a nice glass of milk or tea. My mother and I prefer tea which is something I carry over from my last life. My father has his nice glass of milk which he often tries to persuade me to add a little of to my tea. Which I usually end up doing because it does make it a little bit creamier and nicer to drink.

As we eat my mother looks to me and says, "Today you are coming with me to work as I finally gotten everything set up for you to find out what your magical affinities are. I have no doubt that given the fact that you are our son fire and light magic will come naturally to you, but this is to see what everything else might be a plausible form of magic for me to teach you before you start going to school in five years."

"Yes momma. I'll be on my best behavior I promise," I said before taking the final from the tea that she had poured for me.

My father after breakfast suited up in his armor and grabbed his pistol and went to work. He was the chief of police here and from what mother told me and what he has talked about himself he used to be a pretty high-ranking member of the Imperial Army. Meanwhile mother herself works as the Master Enchantress at her own magical item shop here in town it's the only one in town though and it's situated right next to the blacksmith's shop and the gun store. I've seen her make a few items on the fly and it's always did impressed me.

Heading with her to work today was also nice especially cuz it was the middle of spring and the harvest was finally in as well as all of the flowers being in bloom there's nothing more beautiful then seeing the wisteria blossoms and the cherry blossom trees alongside such unusual trees like the magnamara trees and pailmystra trees. The bright blue pedals with a dark green centered flower similar in look to a lotus flower from the pailmystra trees always seem to pair nicely with the bright red with orange spotted leaves of the magnamara trees with the leaves hanging down like that of a willow tree but the trunk and bark of the tree itself looking more like that of a birch tree. They were everywhere throughout the village and the village itself seemed to be elegantly made in a way to accent the natural beauty of the land especially with the river flowing in the background and the sight of the farm lands with all of the crops currently ready for harvest being collected by the hard workers who helped to maintain the town's food supply. Mother often talks about how many of the trees and other plant life in the area are used in alchemical potions and sold at her shop alongside her enchanted items.

The walk through town over to her shop was always a pleasant trip but took no more than 10 minutes. The shop itself was always very distinct from anything else especially with the entrance to the shop being a door built into the magically altered statue of a giant dragon's mouth next to the window showcasing a lot of the nice premier items for sale with the sign above that read, the Dragon's Hoard. As we walked in I saw mothers 2 coworkers, Mr. Juu'Shen Wang and Mrs. Lamillia Wavedancer.

Mr. Wang was a Namoshi as they are called; humanoid octopus people that have two arms and the standard build of a normal human but they're extra limbs come in the form of their hair which is not here at all but instead 3 to 5 foot long octopus like tentacles which they can train to be strong enough to act as a additional limb or two additional limbs if they're able to train their tentacles to be strong enough. Mr. Wang always said that his people have made very least 6 of these tentacles and at very most about 16 of them that they are born with and only the men can have a couple dozen extra a smaller ones around the face that act more like a beard for them which they develop later in life and can't really move as well as their tentacle hair. As odd as it might sound though looking at them they're actually quite beautiful and almost seemed to have this elegance to them while having a slender yet powerful looking build. Mr. Wang was orange skinned with bright blue spots similar to some real life octopus that I remember back in the old world and he had bright blue eyes and he was a little bit skinnier than other men of his race but he was at least a foot taller than most of them could ever hope to be. He had a couple extra tiny tentacles around his chin like a little goatee that was only 3 or 4 inches long for each of the tentacles.

Mrs. Wavedancer was a Warrig, from what I've learned through reading some of the books in the library their species are part Orc, part Goblin, and part Dwarf. Short and stout doesn't even begin to describe how they look. Most of them never get taller than 4'5ft; seeing one that was 5ft tall was a rare occurrence. They had pale greenish skin for the most part and from what I have been told it does very sometimes two shades of pale blue, gray, black, white, or yellow. They have hair like normal people and the colors can be ginger red, crimson red, black, white, blue, purple, or green. They have for the most part normal-looking eyes that can be almost any color really however their pupils are like that of a goat or toad. They have pointed ears that are shaped like that of an elf but their ears are about 6 to 9 inches long and droop down a little. They can move their ears similarly to cats when they talk. The men either our big beefy muscle bound short fries or rotund balls of either love or hate. The women are either very slim or so thick and curvy and voluptuous that you would swear that some God somewhere is playing a cruel trick on you. Mrs. Wavedancer had a pale blue skin and dark blue hair with bright blue eyes with green freckles here in there. She was one of these slim variety of her kind and she was also the Head Alchemist here at the shop where as Mr. Wang was the man behind the counter actually selling everything to customers.

Mr. Wang greeted us first, "Morning Amaranthine. Oh what's this? I see you finally brought little Tatsu to the shop. You have gotten bigger since I last saw you kid."

Mother replied, "Morning Juu'Shen. Morning Lamillia. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to be taking the first couple hours to see about helping Tatsuhiro figure out what his magical affinities are and trying to craft together a grimoire for him to start studying." Mr. Wang just gives a thumbs up and a nod before taking a sip of this morning tea. Mrs. Wavedancer looks over and sees me and when she does she seems to examine me seriously like a scientist getting ready to study an intriguing specimen. She says, "Sure go ahead. We don't have any special orders or any backlogged requests so you should be fine. If you don't mind I would actually like to run a check up on your son after you're done with him to make sure that he's developing correctly? After all being a Half-Blood means that he might have some complications we may or may not know about."

Mother looks at her and nods but then gives her a stiff warning, "Remember this is just a check up on him. He's not one of your lab rats, so you better not be trying to run some experiments on him." Mrs. Wavedancer replied, "I would never. After all he is your boy and you are my friend. I do have boundaries you know and lines that I will not cross. Besides if I tried to experiment on your son; you would kill me and I'm not a fan of dying."

With that mother gave her a nod and the two of us went in the back of the shop where mother had her enchanting laboratory set up. Everything was neatly labeled and precisely placed in a certain way to make sure that mother was able to do her job exceptionally well without interruption. I was impressed and I wanted to learn more but for now the best thing was to learn the basics.

Mother had created a ritual magic circle on the floor and she had me step in the middle of it. Then using her magic she casted an Arcane spell known as Register Magical Affinity. Despite what it's called that actually does more than that. Not only does it register what affinities that you have but from how she explains it it also tells how powerful your magic is starting off and for someone my age that would be represented by a tiny layer of glowing light around me the color of the light will actually denote what my affinity is and it will slowly shift between colors for each of the types of magic that I would have an affinity for. As the spell started there was no light effect around me at first which mother begin to speak about, "That's odd. Usually it appears right away even people with next to no magical aptitude would have some kind of register. Maybe I drew one of the symbols wrong?"

That's when I heard his voice again; the same boys from back in the void between realms, "So you wish to know what power I hold. The same power that you shunned for so long boy. Fine!"

I then began to glow all of the colors of the rainbow out of nowhere until it was just a solid gold color and mother seemed completely shocked. But as the spelling went on the aura around me grew bigger and bigger until it was pressing up against the edges of the magical barrier that the spell had around us and then it shattered it causing the spell to immediately end. Mother fell back and seemed afraid for a moment then she focused her thoughts and allowed herself to calm down. I didn't dare move closer as I knew that the reason she was afraid it was me I even took steps back just to give her a space. Which was when she realized how she had looked to me in that moment as fear radiated from her. She rushed over and hug me, "Hey. Hey. It's okay. Mommy is okay. I was just startled is all. Everything is fine I swear."

She was lying but it was mostly to make sure that I knew she wasn't scared of me. She wanted to appear strong like any mother would want to. However I could still hear some of the fear in her voice.

After about holding me like that for 10 minutes she finally let go and she told me to stay put as she went to go talk with the others. I did as I was told mainly because I didn't want to cause her any more problems, but I knew what she was going to do was to tell them what had happened. While she was going telling the others what had happened the voice had came back, "That was barely even 0.0000001% and you see how they act? Your body is capable of handling 100%, but currently you lack the skill to truly handle that power responsibly. You will need proper training and education to be able to handle more for now I will leave you with even less power then I displayed so that you can learn responsibly at a level that will not cause trouble with others."

Before I could even respond I felt a surge going through my body like fire in my veins but it didn't burn. It became hard to breathe, but at the same time I felt so energized that I could do anything and so strong that I could lift mountains. As the power flowed all throughout my body, the voice said, "I will be waiting boy. Waiting until you can prove that you can handle more. Until that time, do not disappoint me." Then there was silence and the feel of the power began to subside as it became easier to breathe. When the feeling stopped I ended up making my way to the nearby chair and taking a seat.

I couldn't tell mother about it. I couldn't tell anyone about it. I needed to find out for myself who was the one speaking to me and what it was that he wanted with me. My thoughts were interrupted when the others came in curious as to what my mother was talking about and desiring to see for themselves.
