Zagiilios Chronicles: Tale of the Dragon God

The Basics of Magic

The Basics of Magic

Jan 06, 2022

My mother came over to me again and this time smiling patting me on my shoulders as she squatted down to look me in the eyes. She asked me, "Sweetie do you think you can let mommy try again? Mr. Wang and Mrs. Wavedancer are here to see if there might be something wrong with the spell causing it to act differently."

Taking a moment simply to try and prepare myself in case it happens again but remembering what the voice told me; I stepped back onto the circle without even responding to her ready to begin again. This time when she cast the spell immediately the aura appeared rainbow like in color again pressing up just barely against the barrier but not enough to break it like last time before slowly shifting into a solid gold color. Mr. Wang stop leaning on the wall and the cigarette he was smoking fell from his lips and hit the floor. Mrs. Wavedancer walked around me studying the spell circle beneath my feet and studying me at the same time trying to look for what might be causing the reading when she could find no problem she went over to my mother and whispered into her ear. My mother looked shocked for a moment before taking a deep breath and nodding back to her and then she stopped the spell.

Worried that I did something wrong I bowed my head in shame and asked her, "Did I do something bad?" My mother looked at me very sad when I said that and she walked over and begin gently patting me on the head as she laying down and just kiss me on my forehead. "No you didn't sweetie. You did nothing wrong whatsoever. You're just very strong for the boy your age. You make most adults look weak. It's just a little surprising is all. Most kids like you shouldn't be this strong, but I guess you take after me and your daddy a little bit too much," she looked at me smiling again trying to cheer me up.

Mrs. Wavedancer spoke up, "Alright kid come with me. I'm going to need to do that check up that I had mentioned I might have to do a little bit more test than I was planning on running, but by the time I'm done I should have to have it figured out why you're so strong for your age." I nod and she and I go to the other side of the shop and her and my mother worked together on doing some basic medical examinations on me and then casting a few spells to try and figure out what might be going on with me. However by the time that they're done they both look defeated.

"Well he's perfectly healthy, that's for sure. Nothing's out of the ordinary for what he should be capable of doing however there doesn't seem to be anything going on with him that would explain that overwhelming power," mother said almost unsure whether she should be happy or upset. Mrs. Wavedancer suggested, "Then maybe you can finally agree with me that I'm right. That's the only other explanation for why he would be so powerful for his age."

She looked at her and snapped back, "He is a toddler! What kind of toddler ends up a Godling?! It makes no sense!"

"Maybe it has something to do with his genetics. When the Angels and Demons produce a Half-Blood, that Half-Blood is a Nephilim. The Nephilim are already born as strong as demigods. I know it might be a not be the best explanation especially with the Dragon's blood and Elemental's blood diluting the gene pool but it would make sense why he has so much power for such a young boy," she spoke logically to mother trying to be a voice of reason through known history and study. As such mother eventually caved and ultimately decided that her friend was right.

At the time I didn't know what a Godling was only that mother was forced to recognize that I was one. Considering the comparison that was made I was able to figure that it had something to do with divinity. But I didn't get a chance to think about it for too long as mother took a bit of time to center herself and then she grabbed me by the hand and we started going over the different types of magic again as she tried to push past what was going on and focus on what we were here for today as a way of distracting herself. Through reading and studying in the library at home and with mother helping me I was able to grasp the basics of the different schools of magic and their branches.

There was Elemancy, the School of Elemental Magic. At the core of this school of magic is the manipulation of one of or multiple of the five main elements of fire, water, wind, lightning, and earth. Other branches of the school are combinations of two of or more of these elements. Those being poison, tempest, corrosion, and lava. However there is a even more rare and much more dangerous variation to this school known as Cataclysmic Magic which combines all five of the elements to create spells that could devastate the world. As dangerous as the school of magic is it's also very useful as the magic can allow for many quality-of-life improvements such as earth magic being used for construction work and farming. For water magic being used to help to water crops or keep people hydrated when there are droughts or to prevent droughts to begin with. Wind magic can be used in ways to clean up air pollution. Lightning magic is used to helped power electricity. And fire magic is often used for something as simple as lighting stoves or as major as stopping forest fires by siphoning off all of the flames and heat.

Then we have Necromancy, the School of Dark Magic. Unlike what most people back on Earth think of Necromancy is more than just summoning skeletons here even though that is capable what's happening with Necromancy. The branches of this school are darkness, unholy, blood, death, and unholy summoning. It often has the reputation for being evil magic which is not wrong because this magic directly comes from what was once taught by Demons. However nowadays there are a lot less evil necromancers in the world and any that do use Necromancy for evil or often hunted just like any other practitioner of magic that uses their power for nefarious means. A lot of necromancers specifically use death magic to raise the dead of someone's family and allow people to say their final goodbyes and some people willingly let their bodies being used by necromancers as servants and to help further research on the understanding of the boundary between life and death and if it is possible for someone to be resurrected. There's also the fact that unholy summoning is used to summon forth demons of various kinds and varieties which can be very bad depending on the level of the skill of the summoner and if they put any precautions in place to keep the demon that is summoned from causing havoc.

Next is the counterpart to Necromancy which is Vivomancy, the School of Bright Magic. For all of the reasons Necromancy is hated it helps to make people more comfortable with Vivomancy as it is seen as a stark contrast to the dark arts and for good reason. Vivomancy draws upon the power of heaven and was talk to people by angels. The branches of this school are life, light, holy, and holy summoning. This school of magic is often known for its ability to bestow blessings and lift curses as well as its ability to heal as life magic is purely healing based magic able to cure plagues regenerate lost limbs and of course heal the wounded. Doctors and priests alike use this type of magic often when helping people and oftentimes these days all priests and doctors receive the same training taking a bit of modern medicine and divine magic and blending them together to help save lives.

Next was Eldermancy, the School of Raw Magic, or as some people call it the neutral option if you don't care too much for Necromancy or Vivomancy. It's called raw magic instead of pure magic because magic in this form is oftentimes not as refined to a specific purpose other than the bare-bones guidelines that the magic takes when being cast. The branches of this school are arcane, psychic, eldritch, elemental summoning, and elder summoning. It is seen as more chaotic in nature when compared to other forms of magic simply because it is a bit more free formed with the type of power you can inflict instead of being more specifically guided to a certain need. Despite this most people tend to use it to summon elementals or to communicate telepathically or use it for what my dad calls "moving shit with their minds".

After that is a type of magic but I'm actually very interested in known as Remomancy, the School of Reality Magic. It only has three branches but to manipulate those three branches requires a level of precision and intelligence that someone who has a great deal of knowledge about the basic laws of how the universe works or more could actually benefit from using. The branches are space, time, and sound. Sound is used more sold for stealth or massive sound waves like an utterly destroy someone's eardrums and make them go deaf for the rest of their life or just make their head explode. Time and space magic are the two that I'm more interested in out of this school. Simply because they allow you to fundamentally play with the two greatest laws of the universe and bend them to your will. However most people just use them to make teleportation circles that open teleportation gates allowing for instantaneous travel via portal across great distances. But I want to do so much more than that if I can ever get the chance to truly study it properly.

Last but certainly not least is Materiamancy, the School of Matter Magic. The only two branches of this school are transmutation and augmentation. Augmentation manipulates the matter of one's own physical body allowing a person to genetically alter themself at the molecular level seamlessly without causing any side effects to their overall health or body. Transmutation allows a person to manipulate the matter of anything else except for people. With this type of magic you could actually turn lead into gold and so much more. However it is even harder to master this school of magic then it is to master the manipulation of time and space, and from what I read being taken into account it would need to require an in-depth understanding of the fundamental building blocks of matter and how to convert one substance into another. Which would require the people have a better understanding of science here than they actually do. Magic here actually has hindered some of the advances in science because magic is so useful and can do so much already, but at this time science does not seem as important to the common people. Their understanding of science overall is similar to 1950s level scientific knowledge but with the help of magic they are able to improve their technology a lot better even with certain understandings of how everything works being lacking.

Repeating to her everything that I had learned up to that point about the different types of magic and what they could do mother seemed satisfied, and she began to explain a bit more to me, "Listen Tatsuhiro...... What makes you so different isn't just because you're strong but because you seem to be able to have an affinity for every type of magic. Not just one or two or even three, but all of them. That has never happened before.......... ever...... As you know anybody can learn any type of magic, but magical affinities are the types of magic that a person is naturally better at than someone who doesn't have an affinity for that type of magic. It also means that when they use that type of magic they can learn it quicker and when they cast it it's usually stronger. Most people have only one or two types of magic that they have an affinity for. Certain special people have three or four but that's where it usually stops. No one up till this point has ever had an affinity for every single type."

Part of me was overjoyed hearing that there was something about me that was special, but an even bigger part of me was afraid that this thing that I was being told made me different would make me an outcast just like I had been at the start of my last life. I didn't want to go through that again and I guess at the time it showed through on my face. My mother ended up pulling me in closely for a hug rubbing my back and patting me on the head just telling me that everything was going to be okay and that nothing was wrong. It was so strange even though I had started getting used to it by then. Having a mother that actually cared about me and was willing to comfort me when she saw that I was worried or scared or upset. I knew deep down that she loved me so much and I just didn't understand it that well because it was so foreign to have a parent actually love me. My father was a bit more stern but at the end of the day he cared for me just as much in his own way and I saw it.

Nonetheless when I got home that night my mother told father about what it happened and he sounded shocked but once he let the information process he seemed to have an idea of how to handle it. You might be wondering what his great plan was so was I at the time. It was only as time went on but I figured out what it was. It was simple really, just do nothing. He realize that is they had decided to change how they wanted to raise me to accommodate for this new information it would ultimately make me feel lonely when I was already taught them what I was made me different enough. So making me feel even more different would only cause problems.

It was one of the reasons why I respect him so much. He always did things like that simple, sensible, reasonable things that don't seem like much but ultimately always ended up working. In my last life my father walked out on us because my mother was such a terrible person, but I'm happy that in this life I have a father who doesn't want to leave me behind and actively tries his best to show me what a responsible man looks like and what a good father should be.

All of it led up to today. I'm not 50 years old and today is my first day of school. Going through school again is not something I'm entirely looking forward to. But if I get to learn more about this world and all of the wonderful things that I can do with magic; especially with the little bit of teaching my mother has done over the last couple decades since that day when she found out I was a Godling, then I want to learn. Although having the body of a five-year-old toddler is not the best. Luckily I won't be going to school alone I have my best friend Akira to go with me since we're at the same age. We also have a few other students around our age here in this small town. It'll be nice to meet some new people that I could potentially become friends with in this world.
