It was an early morning near the river. Cileen, was sleeping by the lake which was filled with beautiful koi fish. She stretched her body against the shore when a deer walked up to her. “Why hello little one,” she said with a smile, reaching out her hand. “ What are you doing on this side of the river?” The little fawn walked towards her sniffing her hand.
“ Hey there! Your horns haven’t quite grown out have they?” Cileen pet the gental fawn and looked at the lake where the river connected to it. It was really peaceful near the river. Everyone, well every creature, rested peacefully each and every day. Caleen rose from her slumber, her long black hair dragging against the grass-covered in the morning due. Her golden eyes struggled to blink at the morning sunlight that bathed her dark brown skin in warmth. She yawned as the young fawn followed her to the lake. Then, just like every morning, the animals all came to the river to nap the day away.
Cileen, drunk from her hand's water from the lake of peace. And she was, as always, relaxed. Caleen layered down on her knees and took a moment to see all the creatures around the lake. There were many deers there, rabbits and even bears all drinking together in peace…just like…every…morning.
Caleen after leaving her home a year ago had no more fighting or difficulties in her life. This made her at peace but for some reason, she was not satisfied. The lake, her shelter, her animal companions, they had no uniqueness to them. The lake, though beautiful shimmering in the sunlight, was simply a puddle of water to her eyes as an effect of seeing it for hundreds and mornings and nights. Every day though calming and peaceful, was exactly the same. The same routine, the same air, the same atmosphere. The only thing that changed was her heart which longed for more adventure every day. But perhaps it would be safer if she stayed near the river.
Suddenly the fawn that followed her began to Gallup away. Bringing back her attention Cileen stood up and began to follow the young creature. “ Where do you think you’re going?” Caleen exclaimed joyfully, thrilled to do something more beyond the lake. She picked up her white dress and began to sprint. The fawn was still young and full of life which meant that despite its size it still contained much energy. Quickly he began to gallop far off the territory of the lake and close to the forbidden place where Caleen would dare not go again.
She stepped…
She looked…….
.
She quivered………….
“L-l-little one? Let's not wander off too much. Little one? Little one!”
Caleen ran suddenly feeling an unfamiliar emotion, an emotion that made her heart race and her eyes begin to water. Not aware that she let go of her dress, she tripped and fell on her face.
There was a sound of footsteps, not from her and not from the fawn she once was joyfully following.
“Miss are you alright?” a voice said. She began to lift her head. Her gaze was somehow hard to focus on, but she wasn't sure why. Her eyes revealed a man, seven feet tall, with the body of a warrior, but the dark eyes of a monster.
It was then that Cileen realized what made her eyes unfocused and what made her heart race in such an unpleasant way. The feeling she felt as her eyes widened….
…was fear.
