An Accidental Conjuring

The Weight of it All - SETH POV

The Weight of it All - SETH POV

Jan 21, 2022

I felt stupid, but most of all I felt trapped. Two feelings I was unaware of having.

I blinked a couple times, more regularly than normal, wishing this all to hell with each blink. I wanted to be back home, sat on the sofa, able to do whatever I want, alone. Instead I was here, sat against a hard tree on a forest floor, with a thing infront of me, claiming to be a wizard, deciding how to get me out of here.

I hated it all. And despite the fact it was late into the morning, a heap of drowsiness fell onto my shoulders, making my eyes shutter closed every so often. I swear I had gotten some sleep last night after.. the events.. but maybe it was so early I had only actually gotten an hour of sleep. Who knew, certainly not me.

“Hey.. human.. do you mind if just for tonight we camp out here for now..? I can’t figure out the best plan of action right now, so it’s best to just stay where we are.. wherever we are… for now” The thing nervously asked. It was clearly flustered, and I was too tired to think of a snarky comment anyways, besides, this was what I wanted: a rest.

I nodded in response, and the figure bowed his head to accept it, then got up and walked around for a bit.

I was so tired, I wasn’t able to move. I just sat there, pondering. Wondering, watching. And then, from clear to fuzzy, fuzzy to eternal darkness, I dropped fast asleep.

...

When I awoke, the night sky had come out to greet me, the stars glistening their warm welcome. There were so many of the stars, the sky looked not black, but gray in their presence.

I got up carefully, noticing the creature next to me, and making sure as to not interrupt it’s sound sleep. I walked over to the ledge and sat down, gazing at the stars. I swung my legs in the air, like a little boy on a swing. I felt free.

But after a while, that freeness was replaced with a feeling of indescribable homesickness of which I had never unspeakably experience to this length before. It took control of me, like an owner steering it’s dog in the right direction with a leash, yet the owner was pulling too hard, strangling the dog until I had no option but to choke back tears.

But it was too late, they were already flowing. Damnit.  I licked the salty liquid off my lips, but it kept running, slowly a first, then faster, turning from a slow stream to a rushing river in a matter of close minutes.

Before I could settle down, the creature also began to stir. It wasn’t even yet midnight by the looks of things, so I didn’t all together expect this to happen, but I needed to hide my face. I couldn’t let the creature see me like this, not after I had just taunted it so, it would laugh at my suffering, and I would forever live with the embarrassment of crying infront of a stranger for the rest of my life.

I placed my head in my hands, leaving a slit to look through one eye at the creature to the side of me.

“Hu- oh there you are! Late isn’t it?” The thing yawned, making quiet talk. I remained silent.

It say down next to me, whipping out the berries it was eating earlier.

“Want one?” It tilted it’s head in a questioning sort of way.

Silence again.

“Suit yourself..”

…

“Hey are you ok?” It took a closer look at me, causing my body to tremble suppressing the tears and despair I had withheld for the current moment. It reached out for my hands, and in defeat, I let it reveal my tear stained cheeks behind.

“Oh.. I should have guessed you might have felt this way.. missing home?” It asked empathetically.

Surprised by it’s reaction, I slowly nodded.

“It must be tough.. so far from home… well I have good news for you.. I think.” It laughed awkwardly to fill the silence. I stared at it, my gaze being all it needed to know my response.

“I might have just found a way we can get you home.”

Planet Vox is a beautiful place, home to many creatures alike and not alike, from werewolves to vampires, and centaurs to unicorns. These creatures live harmoniously, together.

But planet Vox was not always like this, no. Over 10,000 years ago, Vox was home to another species of creatures, this species being what you and me are today…

Humans.

After the great betrayal, the humans were forced to leave Vox, and find a new planet.. or face immediate divine punishment, the extermination of their kind.

Since that day, no human has ever stepped foot on Vox again, and the other habitants made it a rule to never speak of the humans again. But soon all of that would change, and it would start with a young wizard, his name being Emery Hubbard.
