Little Ray of Sunshine

Glowing all day long

Loving, Caring, and so Kind

Smile hiding what is wrong

Savior of the Lost and Dark

Who give up far too easy

Each one leaves behind a mark

That makes the Sunshine queasy

But Sunshine just keeps pressing on

Despite the pain it brings

It’s mission to bring forth the dawn

Can never stop, it sings

And so the Sunshine, bit by bit,

Slowly fades away

The Gloom and Anger that consumes it

Can no more be kept at bay

It looks for those upon to lean

But finds themself the leaned on

A Darkness that cannot be seen

Blind “Friends” are far too gone

And so the Ray goes on alone

With no one by their side

Fighting wars that aren’t their own

The Warriors along for the ride

This poem can be whatever it wants to be for you. For me, it's about how I was always the "Happy, Funny, Outgoing" friend/child growing up, and how damaging that stereotype can be. For a brief period of time in my life, I was severely depressed but felt I had no one and nowhere to turn to because I was always the one who was "Alright" and could "Handle Anything".
Luckily for me, my mom had been taking psychology courses and reading books about psychology not for career reasons, but because several of her children were diagnosed with Anxiety, Depression, or ADHD (with an ADHD husband to boot), and she wanted to be the best mom/wife she could.
Because of this, she was someone I could trust. When I told her my feelings, she reacted in a calm and caring manner, asking what I needed from her. Thanks to the aide she gave me, both through being a little more sensitive and attentive with me at home and by making me speak with a therapist, I was able to bring myself out of that dark place and now I'm a much happier person, not because it's what's expected of me, but because I WANT to be.
If any of you are struggling with any depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns, please reach out to a loved one and a professional. Even if it's not "Diagnosed", any form of depression or anxiety, etc. can be harmful. I wish every "Sunshine" being out there the support they need before they are devoured.
