Yesterday, I learned that my wife and I were reincarnated as sisters. Crazy, right? We were living our life, peacefully, when some deity made a mistake and got us killed.
They granted us two wishes, one each, and I guess we got what we asked for. My wife asked that we be reincarnated somewhere close to each other, so that we can live our new life together. I wished for the strength to protect us from anything that comes our way.
In terms of my wife’s wish, this led to me being inside the body of a now one year old girl, and finding out that my twin sister who was born at the same time as me.. Is actually my wife. Not exactly what I expected.

This morning, on my first birthday, I learned how my ability to protect us was going to manifest. I woke up with what I can only describe as a “Pop-up” in my field of view. It was like being in a game, being asked to confirm my actions. It asked me to use three skill points to start, and explained that, while my body could only handle that much right now, I’d be able to unlock more through “heroic actions” and over time as I age. By the time I’m older, I’ll be able to defeat any threats that come our way and protect Kara and I from leaving this world early in the same way we did the last.
I considered picking some skills that were easy to understand and spread out my options, but there were some interesting skills that required more than one point. There was even a necromancy skill that required three points. Don’t get me wrong; it sounds cool and all, but I doubt I can kill anything yet at my age to take advantage of it, and I have no idea how often I will unlock more skill points passively.
The first point I spent was on a skill called “Inspect Object.”
Skill Unlocked: Inspect Object Rank 1: You can view the stats and certain information of any being or object. Better information comes with higher skill ranks
I expected this to be better, but…
Inspecting Creature: Father. Information: Human. This person is recognized by you as your father.
Not very helpful. Nothing I didn’t already know.
Inspecting Object: Rock. Information: This is a rock.
Inspecting Object: Book. Information: This is a book with many pages. You have not yet read this book.
Good grief, at least give me the title of the book. I really need to pick my skills better. It seems that it increases with rank, as if it were a skill in a video game. For now, though, it is just a way to see obvious information written directly in front of me with a creepy disembodied voice repeating it verbally.
I need a skill that lets me grow faster. I have no idea what is out in this world, since I’ve mostly been confined to our parents house and their yard for the past year.
“Whatcha doin’?” Kara asked, walking up behind me.
I explained what was happening to her, and our mom overheard.
“Oh, honey! Kids are so silly these days. They’re saying some kind of text appears in front of them,” Mom said.
“Oh, is that so? Perhaps one of them is a unique mage like you, dear?” father retorted.
Joining in, I asked, “What’s a unique mage?”
“Well, usually I’d say you’re too young to be talking about this, but maybe you’ve unlocked your magic, young one! Your mother is what is known as a Unique Mage. Most people in the world are born with an affinity for a magical element. These can be fire, water, wind, ground. However, around one in every twenty people is born with what is called a Unique Elemental Core. They may have access to multiple elements, or they may have access to a magic that no one else has ever even had!”
This makes sense. Some of the skills I saw suggested as such, such as “Fire Core (Boosted)”, or “Water Core (Boosted).” With the list saying boosted, it seems that, if I did go the basic route, I’d have a more powerful form of these. I shouldn’t be too hasty with my decision, though. “What are some examples of Unique Element Cores, dada?”
“Well, some people may be able to change their location in the blink of an eye,” teleportation, got it, “while some may be able to store things with them, as if they had a backpack, but without the worry of the weight of the items!” and that would be an inventory. I could see that being useful, but I can’t have purely support skills. I guess I’ll pick it up and then find some type of attack magic to start.
“What is mama’s skill?”
“Oh, honey,” mom chimed in, “I have a Unique Element Core aligned with shadows. I can move shadows around at will, and do some other things, but it's very hard to control… I sometimes lose control of my magic because of how powerful it is, so I try to only use it for silly things like wall puppets!”
This wasn’t too reassuring about my home life in the meantime, but it is good to know.
“How does it get out of control?”
“Well, my shadows are linked to a realm beyond our understanding! At least, that’s what the Diviner said. There’s places you can go to get your magic checked. They’re able to see all sorts of things about it, but I doubt they’d check a child in the first place! Usually, someone would develop their magic core around three or four, and be able to cast basic spells by five. A check is done at six to make sure no one is stunting their potential! Most people are limited in what they can do, so we don’t want to limit it even more!”
“Thanks, mama!”
“No problem, sweety! Eve, do you think you’ve already really developed a mana core, or are you just playing make believe with your sister?”
I started going through my menus, looking for a skill I had seen earlier that suddenly had my attention.
“Purchase Skill: Growth Factor.”
Growth Factor proceeding to unlock stage. Due to existing skill, Inspect Object, Growth Factor will unlock as an Evolved Skill.
Oh, that sounds wonderful.
“Haha, you must be playing make believe after all.” Mom started to get up and leave, walking towards dad, but I needed to test something first. “Wait, mama.”
Skill Unlocked: Unique Growth Factor - Rank X. You may absorb objects you come across and creatures you have slain to unlock unique skills.
“Do we have any books on magic?”
