She doesn’t seem too convinced and still worried about him. Mr. Dias finally speaks up “Don’t contact his parents. He must have reasons to not wanting you contacting them about it, and he said he’ll tell them” Mr. Dias had been observing Ethan and suspects that there is more behind this than what others may think.
Mr. Dias used to be a teacher, therapist and drug councillor in a juvenile detention centre. He has a lot of experience with all different kinds of troubled teenage boys like Ethan, but he still doesn’t know much about Ethan yet. Apart from the marks on his neck, worrying about it being told to his parents and not doing his work in class.
GT: “Okay well I was just wanting to let you both know about the therapy sessions. Ethan you’ll be going to the therapy sessions everyday in school for 30 minutes. I should let you both get back to class now”
They both go back into the class, Ethan putting his hood back up before entering and Mr. Dias leaving him to keep it up as he knows why it’s up. Mr. Dias goes and sits next to Ethan again, Ethan rolls his eyes in annoyance. “What don’t you understand about the work ?” Ethan keeps his head up this time and says “Everything”
Mr. Dias: “Everything ? Well will you listen and try if I explain it all, from the start to end”
Ethan nods slowly and Mr. Dias starts explaining everything, every now and then stopping and explaining certain parts different ways because of Ethan looking confused but won’t speak up. I guess he isn’t the type to ask for help Mr. Dias thought. Ethan continues to attempt the questions the best he can and with Mr. Dias helping him, but also gets frustrated a few times wanting to give up. Mr. Dias always figuratively nudges him to do his work.
Ethan hadn’t done his work in school for 2 years now but Mr. Dias somehow managed to be just as stubborn as him and make him do some work on his first day of work. Other teachers that had taught him would think it’s some sort of miracle.
After teaching for a week and sitting next to Ethan each time to give him extra help, Mr. Dias couldn’t help but ask “How long have you not done your work for ? Before I came of course”
Ethan: “2 years now”
