“You?”
“Yeah...me. Whom did you expect? Prince Charming??” Anna's voice cut through the grieving silence of the room.
“Of course...it's you.” said Persephone, her voice almost a whisper, as she attempted to remove the moisture from her eyes.
“Seph...are you crying? Did I scare you?”
“No, you...you didn't. I'm okay.” her nails were now gripping the satin of her dress.
“No. It's something else. Tell me.”
Anna's heart was now burning with a strange feeling.
Sympathy? No, something deeper.
Almost as if she-
She moved closer, and held Persephone's hands. Consoling her, that it will be fine.
‘I wish I could help you...’
She was scared.
For Seph.
For herself.
She wanted to help her dear friend through this, but her own heart was breaking into a million pieces.
For she was too close.
To her.
The one she probably-
Her best friend.
‘Just a friend. She's just a...friend.’
“Anna...I...can't do this anymore, feel like this every single moment.
Feel like...my life is being sucked out of me...bitterly, little by little.”
“Help me.” Persephone said, and a tear fell onto Anna's inky tresses.
Then she looked into her eyes.
Filled with desire.
For Seph.
Being in denial was more difficult on Anna's body than she expected, no control over what she was experiencing.
Because-
There was nothing to be explained. Nothing to be confessed. For she herself couldn't understand what she was now feeling.
But Anna knew.
She could see the choice that she had– to either pull Seph close, fulfil her yearnings for a single night, and lose her forever. Or– let her go, and preserve their friendship.
She chose the latter.
A good decision, but one she would regret forever.
She quickly hid it. ‘It’ could have ruined their bond.
“Come here...I'll hold you. And everything will be fine.”
Anna put her arms around Seph, her warmth being source of the much-needed comfort.
“Thank you, Anna. I love you so much for this.”
“Me, too. I l-love you too...”
And so the two little angels drifted off to slumberland.
