Caroline stared out the window into the grass and trees as they passed by.
“We are almost there,” Caroline’s father, the mayor, said.
“Yes father,” Caroline said, still staring out the window.
She was on her way to Dylan’s father’s house to meet the man she was supposed to marry. Her father didn’t know that she wanted to marry Dylan. The skinny average boy with beautiful brown hair and vibrant green eyes. He was kind to her and acted as if her opinion mattered on everything. Most guys just excused her opinion and acted as if it didn’t matter or never mattered. Her father was included in most of the guys.
The carriage stopped and the door opened. Caroline’s father stood up and walked down the stairs. Caroline picked up her big fluffy baby pink dress full of lace and tassel and stood up. She walked down the stairs with her golden locks bouncing on her shoulders. Caroline glanced up towards the door after she had stepped foot on the ground again.
Dylan was standing next to the door with his brown hair gelled back and in a black and white tuxedo. He was holding open the door for them.
“Good afternoon, Mayor Myers and Ms. Myers”, Dylan said with a slight bow as Caroline’s father stepped inside.
“Good afternoon, thank you for inviting us over,” Mayor Myers said walking in through the door.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Carswell,” Caroline said with a curtsy. “Thank you.”
“Meet me near the lake,” Dylan whispered with a smirk and a wink.
“Of course,” Caroline whispered back, her cheeks slowly turning pink.
Caroline walked through the door and walked into the living room to see her father, sitting in a chair, and Mr. Carswell sitting on the couch across from him.
“Caroline, you may go find something to do while Mr. Carswell and I discuss your wedding”, Caroline’s father said.
“Yes father,” Caroline said, turning back to the door.
She opened the door and stepped outside.
A few minutes later she was at the lake that Dylan requested her to meet him at.
“You made it,” Dylan said walking up to Caroline, holding a bouquet of wildflowers. They were wild daisies. Her favorite.
“I wouldn’t miss seeing your face for the world,” Caroline said. “Also, I can’t swim or anything because I can’t get my dress dirty like I did last time.”
“I promise you won’t get your dress dirty,” Dylan said with a smirk. “I had something to ask you. But first, may I just say that you look beautiful today,” He said, lifting Caroline’s hand and giving it a small kiss.
Caroline giggled. “Why thank you. You don’t look too bad yourself.”
“Thanks.”
“So. . .what did you want to ask me?” Caroline asked.
“Caroline, I’ve known you since we were little kids and I always admired your beauty, both on the inside and outside. I liked you when we were kids and my feelings never changed, they just grew. I know we are not allowed to date or anything, but I can’t imagine my life without you. I love you, Caroline,” Dylan said kneeling on the grass.
Caroline held her hands over her mouth in shock and her eyes teared up.
“I know I can’t give you the life you deserve, but I want to try my best to make you happy. Will you Caroline Daisy Myers, make me the happiest man alive, and marry me?” Dylan said with a grin.
“Dylan. . .,” Caroline began.
“Dylan, your father wants you back inside. . .,” Bethany walked up to Dylan and Caroline, she then noticed Dylan on one knee next to Caroline.
“Oh. I’m sorry,” Bethany said looking embarrassed.
“Caroline, your father wants to see you in-. . .,” Ethan began as he walked up to Bethany. “Oh. I’m sorry. I can see now that I was interrupting something. I’m sorry,” Ethan looked at Bethany, her hair was now up in a messy bun and she was holding up a broom.
“Caroline, that question?” Dylan asked, hope draining from his face.
Caroline began to cry harder, but the tears weren’t happy tears.
Caroline quickly wiped her face and spoke, “I’m so sorry, Dylan. I can’t.”
Caroline then turned away and walked fastly to the door wiping away her tears and putting on a fake smile.
“I’m so sorry bro-,” Ethan began to say walking close to Dylan who was standing staring at the ground.
“Please don’t. I need some alone time right now,” Dylan said, holding a hand out, but still looking at the grass. Then he turned away and walked slowly towards the front of the house.
“What just happened?” Ethan said, looking at Bethany, confusion written all over his face.
“Dylan just asked Caroline to marry him with this big beautiful speech and she said no,” Bethany said looking down sadly at her shoes.
“I thought she loved him. Why would she say no?” Ethan said, still confused.
“Boys,” Bethany said with a sigh. “Because she knows that her father would never agree and he would kick her out. She loves her father and she loves Dylan, but she doesn’t want to see them struggle.”
“Oh, that makes more sense,” Ethan said, confusion disappearing from his face.
“Yeah, well you better get inside before your father gets mad at you,” Bethany said looking at Ethan.
“Yeah, I should. But, first. . .” Ethan began pulling Bethany close to him. Ethan quickly planted a brief kiss on her lips before pulling away. “There. Now I’m ready to go inside.”
Bethany stood there for a moment, trying to wrap her head around what had just happened.
Ethan had already gone inside by the time Bethany walked up to the house and opened the front wooden door.
Bethany went into the living room where she found Mayor Myers, Caroline, Dylan, Ethan, Mr. Carswell, and Ethan and Dylan’s little brother Nick all sitting in the living room. Mayor Myers was sitting in a chair and Caroline was sitting in a chair as well on opposite sides of each other. Next to Mayor Myers, was the couch with Dylan, Ethan, and Mr. Carswell.
Bethany walked up to Mr. Carswell and said, “Sorry to interrupt your business sir, but what else would you like me to do? Would you like me to get any refreshments for y’all?”
“No thank you,” Mr. Carswell replied. “But, I do want you to sit down so we can talk about what you would be doing for the wedding.”
“Yes sir,” Bethany said, walking over to the couch to sit next to Nick.
“Now where were we. . .” Mr. Carswell began. “Oh yes. Bethany, you can help get the bride and groom ready in time for the ceremony.”
“Yes sir,” Bethany said, nodding her head.
“Dylan will be the best man and Nick can be the ring bearer,” Mr. Carswell said.
“I believe that concludes our meeting. Good day, Mr. Carswell. Good day, children,” Mayor Myers said standing back on his feet along with Caroline and then walking towards the front door.
“Good day, everyone,” Caroline said with a small curtsy before walking towards the front door to join her father.
“Good day and safe travels!” Mr. Carswell shouted as Mayor Myers and Caroline walked out the door.
