Dinner was unexpectedly quiet. Usually Caroline’s father would go on and on about his day and how much he had to do. Caroline stared at her plate. She picked up her fork and knife and began cutting her steak. She put a bite of steak in her mouth and began to chew.
“How was dress shopping?” Caroline’s father asked, clearing his throat.
“It was good,” Caroline said after chewing. “I found the perfect dress.”
“That’s good,” Caroline’s father said after swallowing a mouthful of green beans.
“There is something I wanted to talk to you about,” Caroline said looking down at her plate. She took her fork at her steak and began picking at it. Caroline didn’t want to eat anymore. Her stomach was in knots. She tried thinking of what Bethany said about starting the conversation with her father.
“Go ahead. I’m listening,” Caroline’s father said, fixing his attention on Caroline picking her food. She was starting to shake from her nervous jitters.
“Father, I know you want to marry Ethan. . .” Caroline began looking up at her father, staring at her and then back at her fork. “But, I don’t want to marry him. It has nothing to do with his personality or anything. He’s very kind. It’s just that I’m in love with someone else. I’m in love with Dylan,” Caroline said, biting her lip and closing her eyes.
“Ok,” Caroline’s father said. “Dylan is Ethan’s brother. . .and I did promise his father a wedding. . .alright. You can marry Dylan, I will let Ethan’s father know about the change of plans.”
“Really?” Caroline asked, looking up at her father.
“Really,” Caroline’s father said with a smile.
“Oh, thank you so much!” Caroline said getting up from her seat and running over to where her father was sitting. She threw her arms around her father’s neck and kissed him on the cheek.
“Oh! You’re welcome! I would do anything for you, my princess,” Caroline’s father said meaning every word he said. “We will let Ethan’s father know tomorrow.”
