Chapter three
Vlad threw a ball up in the air catching it, he did it again and again, whilst laying on his bed. Jacob sat in his friend's swivel chair, gazing down at his mark.
“I can't believe we both got our marks,”
“I can’t believe I actually passed that test in english. I didn’t even read the book.”
“Come on, mate, this is big, we’re going to met our soulmates at some point this mouth,”
“Whats there to talk about, we get our soulmates, we fuck them, we date them, we eveually get married to them and have cute crying babies together.” Vlad said this all with a stone cold expression, completely serious. He took everything seriously.
“Whoever they are, will be lucky to have you, you being the next alpha and all.”
“And yours will be chuffed to have the world famous HenJacob as their soulmate.”
It was quiet as Jacob rummaged in his pockets bringing out a plastic wallet, “want a hit?” he asked his friend,
“Can’t i have an away game tomorrow, can’t have that fucking up my system.”
Jacob shrugged, opening the wallet up. Inside was dust, magic dust, snorting it up the nose, gave a person a high, a short quick one, but it made Jacob 's blood boil with power, and an ease. It was supposed to be used for potions, but on friday nights, most used it at parties to line.
“Goddess i’m hungry,” Vlad muttered,
“What’s your mum making?”
“I don’t know roast i think,”
“Please say lamb, please say lamb,”
“It’s lamb,”
“Fuck yeah,” Riuck punched the air, “the only reason i’m friends with you is because of your mums cooking.”
“And our bond of friendship had never been tighter,” Vlad said woefully.
“Boys dinner!”
“Speaking of food,” Jacob grinned, jumping off the chair, running to the door, “you pig for brain brothers better not have taken the best cuttings.” he grumbled darkly, hopping down the stairs with Vlad following behind.
He and Vlad had been friends since they were five. They both had neutrally agreed that they were far better and powerful than the rest of the people and around them and thus naturally decided to beat the living out of one another.
There could be only one top dog.
It was a mess, literally they had fought in the sand pit at the playground. Jacob had never had so much sand in his mouth and well everywhere. They bit, kicked, and punched, even throwing sand in each other's eyes.
Vlad had at some point during the fight gotten on one of the swings, standing on the seat, then after gaining enough speed jumped, aiming and succeeding to elbow Jacob to the ground.
Jacob had later pulled Vlad by his train themed top, and placed him under the seesaw, he then repeatedly pushed the seesaw up and down onto Vlad's head. Their parents had to pull them apart, no one was winning the fight, their parents had taken them to get ice cream after, and after both choosing the same flavour of ice cream, the two instantly knew they were best friends, and so they had been for the last fourteen years.
Getting to the dining room, the long mahogany dining table was set out, with china plates, and glass cups. The Volkovs were incredibly wealthy, and they liked to see that in everything. Jacob would have said it was snobbish of them but that would make him a hypocrite, after all he lived in one of the better sides of the city, in a huge town house, his family had lived in for generations.
Jacob took his normal seat, he had been around enough to have one, Vlad took his next to him. The Volkov twins sat opposite sniggering about something, which he soon found out about when Penelope, Vlad's younger sister walked in hunched down, as if trying to make herself even smaller than she was. Her face was carved in, hollow and deathly pale, she looked like the walking dead, from what he could see of her arms and legs they were nothing but bone and skin. The poor girl looked as if she would be blown away by a mere gust of wind. He frowned slightly; it was rare for her to come down and join the family, apparently according to Vlad she normally ate during the night, nibbling on leftovers like a mouse, he never spoke nicely of his sister or even at all.
But then Jacob 's world froze in place, behind Penelope, walking in was a stunning girl, with long brown hair, she had olive coloured skin, and purple tinted eyes, that swirled with a glimmer of gold, and rimmed with lavender. Her jumper hung off her curvaceous body nicely, making Jacob lick his lips. Hev noticed something packed at her back, but he looked away, he couldn’t not stare at her. It was her, the one. His soulmate.
The girl on the other hand looked horrified, she had gone pale and stopped at the door frame. Silent for a long moment.
“I’m sorry miss Volkov,” she began shakily, “but I forgot I need to be getting home.”
“Oh but i set your place and-”
“Sorry, but my mum will be missing me.”
Mrs Volkov sighed dejectedly, “of course, love, go ahead, have a safe trip home.”
“Are you walking?” Jacob finally asked, he saw the shiver that rippled the girl at hearing his voice. He liked that, he liked that alot.
“I am,” she spoke barely above a whisper.
“Your going to be walking alone at night in the city?” Jacob raised his brows. Vlad passed him a questioning look asking why he should care.
“It’s fine i-”
“No, Jacob is right, it would be wrong of us to let you walk on your own.” the alpha cut in,
“But-”
“I can drop you off after dinner, on my way home,” Jacob offered,
“Excellent,” the alpha sounded, he sat down at his place at the head of the table as if that was the end of the matter. The girl couldn’t argue against the alpha so she sat defeated.
Jacob grinned, there was no way he was letting her leave like that. They began to help themselves to servings. Both Penelope and her friend, which was killing Jacob not knowing what her name was, were hardly eating, seemingly wanting to leave as soon as possible.
He jabbed his fork into Vlads hand, getting his attention.
“The girl, who is she?”
“One of Pennys little friends. Avegline Maren i think is her name,”
Jacob nodded, “thanks,”
“What is it?” Vlad asked, he had always known when something wasn’t quite right with his friend.
“She’s it,” he answered,
Vlad gave him a dull look, “fine don’t tell me,” he then carried on to eat his dinner.
“Did you know that both Penny and Vlad had gotten their marks last night,” Mrs Volkov asked Avegline. “So lucky, it’s an honour for our family,”
Avegline smile dimly, “that’s great,” she muttered. She looked back down to her plate,
“Maybe for Vlad,” one of the twins sniggered, Jacob that it might have been Andre, but he could hardly tell the two apart.
Jacob could see how much Penelope tensed up, “boys don’t tease, you’ll get your marks one day too you know,” Mrs Volkov said oblivious to the mockery that was directed to their sister. Jacob had hung around the house enough times to know what the pack and Penelope's brothers thought of her, she was runt that no one wanted around and they didn’t let her forget that. Jacob didn’t know if her parents knew about the harassment she got on a daily basis or simply chose to ignore it.
“Honey, you’re hardly touching your food,” Mrs Volkov stared at her daughter with concern,
“I’m-i’m not that -h-hungry,” she stuttered quietly,
“But this is our celebration for you and Vlad getting your marks,” she pouted,
“Eat more penelope,” the alpha commanded,
Jacob saw how Avegline gazed at her friend, she gently placed a hand on her hand, giving her a comforting smile. Penelope gulped looking down at her plate as if it were alive. She cut into the meat and chewed slowly, doing so several times, as if it were a test of courage. Avegline squeezed her hand when Penelope had finished all the meat on her plate.
Jacob heard one of the twins muttering that she was being dramatic.
When the main course was done, Mrs Volkov cleared away the plates, telling the teenagers that dessert would be out in a few minutes. As soon as her mother and father left the room, Penelope sprinted out of her chair, and went to the nearest bathroom. Avegline followed closely behind.
They came back a few minutes later, Avegline hand her hands rubbing Penelope's back, as the girl guzzled down a glass of water.
Jacob noticed the disgruntled look Vlad had but said nothing of it, soon their parents came back into the room, Mrs Volkov carrying a tray with apple crumble inside. When sat down the dessert, she frowned at Penelope.
“Are you not feeling well?”
“I-i don’t think the food agreed with me,” she whispered, “c-can i be excused?”
Her mother slowly nodded, she got up immediately, Avegline saying her thanks for the meal and headed up the stairs with the other girl.
“Maybe it was the sauce,” Mrs Volkov muttered, as her husband stared daggers at where the girls had sat.
Jacob wondered what that was all about?
