The Ashes of War

I'm going to be honest I'm not sure what I was wearing, I didn't really care. All I knew was it wasn't stifling, and since I couldn't see through it, no one else could. Black veil speckled in white waved in front of my face as I pretended to pay attention, the boy indeed did seem about my age, but he didn't actually talk to me that much. Such was a relief, but still a tad frustrating. I couldn't quite figure out what his motive was, he was talking to papi at the table but only about the topics Papi brought up, of course then again perhaps it was just to get on his good side, all the past delegates were sent home at some point for various reasons. I fingered the thin fabric of my sleeve while they talked staring off into space.
I can still smell the strong scent of roses in my clothing. It made me queasy, it was far too strong to be what would naturally be in a Rose Field, it never felt right no matter how many times I bathed in the scent.
My feeling of unease though was not only that of the hatred of concentrated Rose, but also the delegate's company. He had been brought by a man who, despite trying to push away all stereotypes, wreaked of deceit and embezzlement. his clothes were finer than those of the one he escorted, his gut still nearly escaping the confines of the large lavish garments he wore.
If we didn't end up sending the boy home this time, there is no uncertainty that we would be sending home his escort instead.
I looked over at the boy after this thought, only to catch him stealing a glance my direction. I quirked my eyebrow underneath the veil in curiosity, wondering why he would hide the action of looking towards me, then I caught a slight blush on his cheeks, I nearly laughed out loud! It was almost cute the innocence of this boy as if he had been locked up away in a tower his whole life, a damsel in distress awaiting a prince charming, except for the other way around. Why he had been chosen as a delegate was beyond me, but he had certainly grabbed my attention.
If that was the point of choosing him it had certainly been accomplished, now that I looked towards him his shocking blonde hair of white snowy Platinum and blue crisp eyes let me dare not look away, I wanted to ruffle his hair every time I caught him doing something silly, or smack his escort every time he belittled the boy in front of the Duke.
Then suddenly after the long meal walking back to my room I stopped in my tracks my eyes growing wide as I spoke aloud; the realization of my stupidity far too delayed;
"Shoot, The Duke wasn't the target this time was he? it was me!"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud, usually even people who are meant to interact with me are chosen because they would catch the duke's eye, it was almost refreshing now to realize they had tried something new despite failing so miserably as to put their bait in the friend zone or even the cute little brother one!
