Caroline knocked on Nick's hospital door before entering.
“Come in,” a small boy's voice said.
Caroline walked in and closed the door behind her.
“Hi, Nick. I brought you some Snickerdoodles, your favorite,” Caroline said, setting the basket of cookies on the small table by the bed. Caroline then flattened her skirt before sitting down. “How are you?”
“I’m doing much better. The doctors have taken great care of me. They also said that I would be getting a new roommate!” Nick said, excitedly.
“That’s awesome!” Caroline said. “Do you know who it is or when they are coming?”
“She’s coming today. I don't know her name, yet,” Nick said.
Suddenly the room’s door opened and a nurse came in carrying a suitcase.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Myers,” the nurse said, setting the suitcase down on a chair next to the other bed beside Nick.
“Good afternoon,” Caroline replied.
“Nick, your roommate will be coming in a moment,” the nurse said before walking out the door.
A few minutes later, a girl was pushed into the room in a wheelchair. She was wearing a blue hospital gown and her silver-white hair in two french braids that hung down over her shoulders. The girl had a giant bandage wrapped around her leg. The nurse pushed the girl to her bed and then helped into the bed.
“If you need anything please just call the front desk,” the nurse said before leaving the room with the door shut behind her.
“Hi. You must be my new roommate,” Nick said, his cheeks slowly turning pink.
“Hello, my name is Wendy,” the girl said, looking over at Nick and Caroline.
“My name is Nick,” Nick said. “Why are you in the hospital?”
“I got burned by an iron,” Wendy said. “I dropped it on my leg by accident. What about you?”
“Carriage accident,” Nick answered. “Would you like a Snickerdoodle?”
“Sure,” Wendy said.
Caroline then reached into the basket of cookies and pulled out a cookie. Caroline then got up and walked over to where Wendy was sitting in her hospital bed.
“I’m Caroline,” Caroline said, handing the cookie to Wendy.
“Thank you. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Wendy said, taking the cookie.
“You’re very welcome,” Caroline said walking back over to Nick’s bed and sat down.
There was a knock on the door and then Dylan walked in.
“Hi, Nick. How are you doing?” Dylan asked, walking over to sit beside Caroline. He gave her a kiss on the cheek before sitting down.
“Good. I got a new roommate,” Nick said, gesturing towards Wendy.
“It is lovely to meet you,” Wendy said, nodding.
“It is nice to meet you too. I’m Dylan,” Dylan said.
“And I’m Wendy,” Wendy said.
An hour later there was another knock on the door. Bethany and Ethan walked into the room. Bethany was holding a huge purse and Ethan was holding two suitcases.
“We tried to get here as fast as we could,” Bethany said, setting the purse down at the end of Nick’s bed.
“She didn’t even let us check into a hotel first,” Ethan said snickering to himself.
Bethany glanced to the bed beside Nick and cupped her hands over mouth. Wendy looked at Bethany and then cupped her hands over her mouth. Bethany’s eyes began to tear up.
“What’s wrong?” Ethan asked Bethany in a concerned tone.
“Is that you, Wendy?” Bethany asked, walking closer and closer to Wendy’s bed.
“Yes. Bethany?” Wendy asked.
“Yes,” Bethany said, running over to Wendy and then hugging her.
“I’m very confused,” Nick said.
“Me too,” Ethan said, confused.
After Wendy and Bethany broke their hug. Bethan wiped her tears away and said, “Sorry everyone, this is Wendy, my youngest sister.”
“It is very nice to meet you,” Ethan said, walking over to Wendy’s bed and shaking her hand.
“It is very nice to meet you as well,” Wendy said.
“I’m Ethan,” Ethan said. “Bethany’s fiancee.”
“Wow. Fiancee. Nice catch,” Wendy said, looking over at Bethany and smiling.
“Thanks,” Bethany said. “I’ve just been wondering where you’ve been for the past few years. . .”
“I’ve been working at a local dress shop at the supermarket,” Wendy said. “I iron clothes and sew too.”
A nurse then entered the room before Bethany or anyone could ask another question.
“Visiting hours are over,” the nurse said.
“Bye, Nick,” Dylan said, hugging Nick and then standing up to leave. Caroline then walked over to Nick and gave him a hug too. Caroline waved goodbye and then she and Dylan left the room.
“Well, I have to go home,” Caroline said as soon as Dylan and her were alone in the hallway.
“Would you like a ride home?” Dylan asked.
“Sure,” Caroline said.
“Let’s go then,” Dylan said, handing Caroline his arm. Caroline grabbed his arm and he walked her outside to a carriage. “After you,” Dylan said, opening the door for Caroline as she climbed inside.
Caroline then sat down on the velvet cushions and scooted over for Dylan to sit next to her. Dylan then climbed inside and shut the door behind him. He then sat next to Caroline and wrapped an arm around her waist. Caroline leaned on his shoulder and closed her eyes.
“I love you,” Caroline whispered, drifting off to sleep.
“I love you, too,” Dylan said, kissing Caroline on the head. Dylan then laid his head on Caroline’s head and closed his eyes as the carriage passed by trees and more trees.
