DnD Short Stories

Them

Them

Feb 16, 2022

It's not often when I can look at someone and know for certain that I can trust them with all my heart. But something about the way they moved, the simple actions they took in their existence, I knew.

I still can't quite put my finger on it; I've known them for years now, since we were children. Even back then, I knew they were safe. Lord, did we get into trouble though. The instant they would come over not a single bit of work would get done from myself nor my sister. They are an incredibly bad influence, I'll give them that. We'd spend days together, sometimes the three of us, sometimes just the two. Those were the best days of my childhood, even if they ended bitterly.

When we crossed paths again, it felt like everything just picked up right where we left off. They were different, and so was I, of course, but life felt pure once more. All of the pieces fell back into place. I felt whole again. Sure, we had our ups and downs, but they were always there by my side.

We'd spend our whole lives together after that, day in and day out. Its a simple life; they help me run errands and remember what's slipped my mind. They're next to me as soon as I wake up in the morning, their small frame curled against my body, clinging on like they'd lose me if they so much as loosened their grip. We'd spend evenings dancing in my office, and every morning they'd cling onto me while I cooked us both breakfast. I had their coffee memorized from day one, just as they had my tea. They help me around the library and in my apartment, and I help them when they came home banged up from a job.

They're the gentlest person I had ever crossed paths with. Their touch sends shivers up my spine, plants butterflies in my stomach, and leaves me an absolute fool. Their fingers lift my chin when I'm patching up their scuffed up knees, and I'm all theirs. They've had to scold me once or twice to remember my original task; I swear, they've got me wrapped around their finger.

Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.
