First impressions: The city is so beautiful. I had no idea that there would be a place so beautiful in this world we were reborn into it. It was lively, and the air smelled so fresh and clean. There were vendors at every corner, street performers doing their thing everywhere. And yet, amongst the chaos was a sense of calmness, as if it was a perfectly safe place to be. Guards were stationed amongst the crowd. For someone paying enough attention, you could tell they were hidden in the crowd from the way they observed everything around them. They seemed constantly at the ready in case something were to happen.
“Which way are we going?”
“That way, Eve!” my father said, pointing towards the giant castle beyond the courtyard. Man, this place sure beats any city I’ve ever been to. It isn’t just the magic, it is the fresh air. Pollution had ruined everything back home, made the air stale and unclean. But here… this was so nice. I hope that the royalty isn’t too rude.
Mph. Hey! Some guy just bumped into us.
“Hiccup. Sorry ‘bout that, fellas! Hiccup.”
Ugh, I guess drunks are still always going to be a problem. Wait, what is this overwhelming aura. It isn’t coming from that guy, that’s for sure, but where?
“You had best return what you have taken.” Woah, where did he come from?
A young looking guy has suddenly appeared, with some form of static enveloping his body. Maybe lightning magic? But, he’s holding up the hand of the drunk- HEY! That’s my dad’s wallet!
“Dada, he had your wallet!”
“Well then. I see the Magic Knights of Ormonero are as exceptional as they say,” my dad said, getting on his knees to bow. He sat me down and I bowed as well. With someone that strong, it would be best for me to be polite. “Thank you. I had not noticed what happened, and caused trouble for you-”
“Fret not.” This guy’s smile was sinister. Lightning suddenly seemed to cut through the drunkard’s arm where the knight was holding it, and then he fell to the floor in pain.
“AHHHHHHHH!”
“No hands should be thieving around the city of Ormonero.” He cocked his head in a way that left me too scared to say anything or object to what had happened. Even though I’m a kid right now, I get the feeling that he wouldn’t hesitate to kill me if I got on his bad side. “So, I’ll just be taking this with me.”
He started to walk off. My father was clearly shaken. And this knight was just walking off with our gold after ‘rescuing’ it from the drunken thief.
“DIE, YOU-” that was a bad idea. The thief pulled out a knife with his other hand and started to take a step towards the knight, but it was over in a flash. A literal flash. It was like he turned into lightning itself and struck through him. His body fell to the floor in pieces. This was unreal. No one should be taken down like this over pickpocketing.
And suddenly he was in front of me. I could see past him to my father, he just noticed and wanted to move, but was too afraid to move a muscle. Not that I would want him to anyway. If he dared to challenge this guy, we wouldn’t be making it home. His actions were so intentional. He took the time to turn his back on the guy just so that he’d have an excuse to cut him down once they attempted to go for a strike.
And now he was tilting his head at me while smiling and chuckling. “Oh, sorry. I forgot to return this.” He took a coin out of the bag before tossing it at my feet. “It’d probably be best for you to hold onto this, since even a child wouldn’t fall for such a silly trick.”
“Why?”
He looked annoyed and intrigued at the same time.
“Why what, little one?”
“Why did he have to die?”
He bellowed out such a loud laugh that was insulting to the deceased. It was as if he found my question preposterous.
“Why else? He dared to attack a knight.”
“But you intentionally gave him the opportunity to.”
My throat suddenly tingled. There was a blade formed of pure lightning at my skin. “Oh? And that matters to what end?”
I’ve messed up. I shouldn’t have said anything. This could all be over right now.
“PLEASE FORGIVE MY DAUGHTER.” My father screamed and kneeled with his hands and face touching the floor. “SHE DOES NOT REALIZE WHO SHE IS TALKING TO.”
He cocked his head again and smiled at my father, dismissing the blade. “I’m sure you won’t mind me taking this as an appropriate showing of your apologies, then?” He showed a coin. Likely one of ours. He had it this whole time. He knew what he was doing from the get-go.
“You may take as much as you’d like.” my father said. You say that, dad, but… this guy might just take it all.
“This amount will be fine!” he said, before disappearing in an instant in a flash of lightning.
So much for this city’s great first impressions.
