Maybe I was reading too many thriller novels late at night on weekends. I shrugged my shoulders back, to defy the shivers that were resonating in me and got ready for school.
Uncle Earl had already left early to catch some marine life by the docks. I creaked back down the stairs from the bedroom. Looking in the mirror, by the front door, I checked my outfit of the day and my hair. The red hoodie’s colour popped out with my black crop top and dark olive green joggers. I did a couple poses in front of the mirror. Feeling more confident I picked up my sneakers, snagged them on both feet and walked out the door. As I closed the door, I pulled my school bag off my back and unzipped the front pocket for my house keys. It had an anchor keychain. That’s what Uncle Earl made me for my birthday, last year before starting high school. I clicked the key in the keyhole and turned to the right. After I pulled the key out, I checked the doorknob pushing the door to make sure it was locked and secure. Setting forth my right foot of the front door steps I began my path towards Pitt Meadows High.
During my twenty-minute walk towards school, my mind begins to wonder about my envision that showed up from last night. Who was that woman? I’ve never seen that room in my life before. There were plants that I have never seen before also. It was so vivid. The woman had long black, wavy hair just like mine. Her eyes were like sky blue, but when you looked into them they were almost endless. Seeing her sorrow face caused my chest to feel a dull pain. Blinking my eyes, I tried to defy my tears that were welling up. I rubbed my eyes with my hoodie sleeve. I’ve never met her before, but she knew who I was. She also had scars all over her arms and hands. Who did that to her? My memories rang back to the scene when she cried out to me. I folded my arms to my chest. I was trying to comfort myself. Despite everything, it was just a dream. Still, thinking about it scared me. She wasn’t the reason that made me scared, Caedenbitus, that name I whispered when I awoke made me shiver.
I reached inside my red hoodie pockets and pulled out my smartphone. Using my data I searched ‘Kaydenbeetus’…wait is that how you spell it? When it loaded the message just stated, “Your search-Kaydenbeetus has no data.” Scratching my head I just shrugged and placed my phone back in the pocket.
As I looked up I just reached the school entrance, instinctively I rushed to my locker to brush off my thoughts. Turning the dials to my lock combo, I pulled the lock and it snatched up. When my locker opened up, I unzipped my school bag and dropped off the load I didn’t need for the first and second periods.
The first and second period was English and science. The teachers collected my homework at the beginning of each class and assigned new ones when the bell rings. There wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. I tried to focus harder in class to shake the thoughts I had during my venture to school.
The bell chimed to signal the students it was lunch. When I patiently marched in a line with other crowds of students in the hallway, hunger growled in my belly. I pressed my hand to my belly hoping no one nearby heard that. Passing by school windows it showcased the weather outdoors, it was sprinkling. Not caring, I decided to just eat outside anyways. Maybe I can cool my head from the weird dream I had last night.
I don’t have any friends so as a routine I eat alone outside. It didn’t matter rain or shine. I don’t get wet generally and I liked the outdoors. It was great to breathe in the fresh air after being stuck in the stuffy classroom for so many hours. This is probably why other students think I’m so weird. Usually, if it rains, I just eat underneath an area where there is shelter resulting in my lunch not getting wet.
I sat down outside on a bench nearby with a cover on top that sheltered my lunch from the rain. Opening my naval blue bag, it had some leftover clam chowder in a thermos from dinner last night and slices of baguette. I unscrewed the thermos bottle cap and poured the contents into a small plastic bowl that had a spoon placed inside. Grabbing the bag of sliced bread I pulled either side, to pop open the zipper that secures the insides of the bag. The chowder steamed as I cupped the bowl with my hands and brought it to my lips, the warm liquid emanated the insides of my mouth and throat. Placing the bowl back on the table I felt the liquid continued to stream down to my stomach, warming it up. I continued to eat as I pulled out my phone and checked if I got any messages from Uncle Earl. The only contact on my phone was him, emergency and the school office number. I wasn’t much of a talker so many kids in the school don’t talk to me or don’t even know I’m there. I’m okay with that though, I think it’s easier when I’m alone.
The bright screen on my phone indicated to me there were no new messages. So, I continued to eat while watching the cold rain. As break was finishing, I noticed a beautiful woman in a black trench coat and jumpsuit. She just kept staring back. She had long straight dark brown hair. It looked like she had shaved a small part of her front right side of her head. Fashion, I guess. Even though I was under shelter, she continued to just stand a few feet away from me in the pouring rain. I wondered if she was a new teacher or a student’s parent. It was still weird she just kept staring back. Concluded, I stared back at her. She didn’t respond, or wave, nothing. So I ignored her and began to clean up since the break was about to finish. When I took another peek at her, her red velvet colour lips smiled at me. She approached me amid the rain and grabbed my wrist. I felt high heat coming from her hand as she continued to hold on to my wrist. Feeling confused and scared I began to try to pull away, but she was so strong. The heat grew hotter, faster and I squealed as her palms and fingers of her hands began to sear the circumference of my wrist. She was burning me. I could smell the skin around my wrist being cooked.
Trying to pry her hand off with my other hand, they began to burn also from touching her. Screaming in pain, I cried for help. Her free hand grabbed my other wrist. I cried out in pain again, now feeling the same pain in both wrists. She pulled my wrist towards her body and knees me in the stomach. As my knees dropped to the ground she finally let go and I began to puke my lunch out. While puking, she took her other knee and attempted to attack me again. This time I saw her attack and put my two hands in front of my face to protect it. When her knee impacted my hands, a sizzling sound seared the palms of my hand and fell backward. The pain in my hands kept stinging. My hands were now burned into a cracked, raw and bleeding state. It hurt so much my lower lip automatically quivered feverously from the pain. Desperately looking around, for witnesses but no one was around to help. It’s my fault, I liked being alone so this is what happens when I’m alone and there is danger. This was it, I felt. My eyelids began to shut… I was giving up on hope.
“What are you doing, you bitch!!!” Uncle Earl appeared out of nowhere and, shoved the mysterious woman. Instead of falling to the ground, she has grabbed his right temple instead. She stuck her thumb onto his eye causing searing pain into his right eye. You can hear the sizzling sound from her fingers tips, the same sounds of when searing a steak. I watched in horror, her grip lifted off Earl’s face. Smoke and ash trailing off her fingers as she gently removed her hand off his face. Uncle Earl’s right eye had turned white and brown, she blinded his one eye. Earl braced his eye and wince with groans. I took the scotch bottle that he dropped on the ground and smashed it on her head. It exploded, resulting in Uncle Earl and I pushed back a couple of feet from her. Looking and feeling around my surroundings for any type of weapon. There was none.
I was scared, but I didn’t want my Uncle to get hurt again. Quickly I got back up on my feet. My sight directed towards Uncle Earl as he was groaning and halfway standing back up. Watching his groans and painful injuries, a prickling surge began to pierce violently in my body. I raised both my arms in the air and dropped my palms towards her. I just wanted her to go away.
All the rainfall that was pattering around stopped as if time has stopped. Each raindrop began to form ice crystals. At the same time, the background temperature began to lower suddenly. When the raindrops form into ice, I waved my hands signalling them to fire towards her. The crystallized ice suspended in the air, for a second, and rushed towards her. My vision began to blur, but I kept grunting to keep up the attacks. The mysterious woman yelled in surprise because my attack was successful for a little while. In defence, she waved her right arm from left to right. A blanket of smouldering lava began to form behind her hand, protecting her from my attacks.
She glared right at me and hissed in the wind, “Destroy Creaturae, Caedenbitus for eternal…I’ll be back for you princess.” she melted into liquid-hot lava. My eyes widened and Uncle Earl rushed over to hug me, he began to whimper from what he had to witness. I felt relieved that the dangerous lady left. Eyes rolled back, I fainted.
