AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
So yummyyy!
“What is this food called again?”
“Kokovo, young lass!”
My goodness, it's so delicious. It reminds me of a nice egg and rice bowl back home. The food we’ve had since we came here has been good, mind you, but this is the first food I’ve had that really hit the nostalgia right on the mark. This is like something Kara would have made us for breakfast before. I wish I could take some home for her to try, but I doubt it would survive the trip back.
“It’s so tasty, Mr! Thank you!”
“Haha, I never realized how much of an appetite you could have, Eve!”
“Dad, we need to have more food like this at home!”
“Kokovo is expensive! If this wasn’t on the house, there’s no way we could afford it, short of stealing one from a Kokego ourselves! Haha.”
“What’s a Kokego, dad?”
“A Kokego is sort of like a mix between a dragon and a bird. It is as fast as a land bird, but it has the size and strength of a dragon.”
Fast, but strong. “Where can I find one?”
“HAHAHA, don’t tell me you intend to go out and find one for yourself, Eve?”
“Actually, most Kokego eggs come from bred Kokegos! We source ours from a local farmer who breeds miniature Kokegos.”
That honestly just sounds like a feisty chicken to me. The egg portion does taste quite a lot like how I remember chicken eggs, though it has a hint of umami flavor that makes it stand out. The way the taste of the egg and their seasonings mixes with the texture of the grain they use is phenomenal. It is a slightly longer grain, unlike rice, but it stays straight instead of bending like spaghetti would. It would be hard to pick up if I was using a spoon instead of chopsticks.
“How much do the eggs cost, Mr?”
“About 3 silver coins each.”
Ugh. Cheapass, that isn’t out of budget at all. A single gold coin is worth 100 silver, so that’s almost 3 dozen eggs per gold coin. A single golden coin could keep me happy for a whole month! I’d love to have these for breakfast every morning.
“We should buy some eggs for sis, papa!”
“Haha, maybe a couple! We are a little short on coins to what we thought we’d be, afterall. We wouldn’t have been able to have this wonderful meal if it wasn’t for this wonderful chef!”
Yeah, at least someone in this city has manners. First a thief tries to steal from us. Then a guard kills him and steals from us instead. But at least the chef from this little road-side restaurant saw what happened and took some pity on us. They’re really ripping people off though. Based on the signs, they charge 1 gold coin per serving. Grains are cheap no matter where you go, so with the eggs only costing 3 silver, I doubt they’re making less than 90 silver per dish.
“Awee! But sis would love this!”
“Well, how about this!” The chef pulled out a case holder with embroidery on it that looked way too fancy for its own good. “I’ll give you this for only 2 gold coins!”
The case only has 6 eggs in it! That’s worth 18 silver, not 2 gold. There’s no way you’re telling me the case is worth that much of the difference.
“What type of case is that, Mr?”
“Oh, well, you see! This is a special case only found in the city of Ormonero! It stores eggs using an ice spell, see!” Ah, yes. There is a small engraving that seems to be giving off magic, though it is sort of small. “Eggs spoil if left in the heat too long, so we recommend this case! The enchantment needs to be redone every now and then, but it would allow you to get your eggs home safely!”
Nah. “How much for just the eggs?”
“Huh, you don’t want the case?”
“Well, how much is the case worth, Mr?”
“Well, the case is worth far more than 2 gold! This is really a great deal, afterall!” What a scammer. The enchantment already looks as if it is weak as is.
“Yeah, but like she asked,” my dad started, finally speaking up, “How much for just the eggs?”
The chef obviously looked a little flustered. I bet all the tourists just eat his shit up. He’s obviously overpricing everything here. He only offered his kindness to sucker us into spending money.
“Well, I could let go of them for 1 gold coin!”
“I thought you told us that the eggs were worth 3 silver each? Wouldn’t that make 6 eggs worth 18 silver?” Oh, my dad seems to be paying more attention than I thought. Maybe if he had paid this much attention before, he wouldn’t have gotten pickpocketed.
“Oh.” He’s so flustered. “But it still costs to travel to get the eggs!”
“How about 36 silver for the 6, Mr?”
“Hey, now, Eve! Don’t go spending daddy’s money!”
“DEAL! But you can’t get the case with that, just the eggs. You understand, right?” Such a conman. He was obviously able to accept this much all along. Maybe the people here just like to barter?”
My dad sighed, “Fine.” and reached for his coin pouch.
I already planned on trying to get a storage device here, so we’ll just store it that way once we get one. I can hardly wait to surprise Kara by being the one to cook for her for once!
