Chapter 7 - Overtime

Chapter 7 - Overtime

Feb 26, 2022

When I returned to the company, the paperwork piled on my desk was visible all the way from the doorway. Co-workers were busying themselves around me, avoiding eye-contact. 'Thanks guys.' I thought sarcastically as I trudged to my cubicle. 'I better organize this mess first so I'll have room to look through the meeting notes...' I fought against the urge to let out a heavy sigh. 'At least I had gotten some shut-eye earlier, unplanned or not.'

While I concentrated on my work, the people started to trickle away one by one and before I even realized it, I was the last one left. ‘Being alone in the office so late is a little bit scary, but it’s not like I have a fear of ghosts or any of that supernatural stuff. As long as they don't bother me, I won't bother them.’

"God, I'm so tired..." I mumbled to myself as I stretched my body and my shoulders popped to relieve built up tension.

"Do you want a massage Mr. Baek-Yang?" Someone spoke from behind me.
My whole body froze. I hadn’t heard anyone arriving. ‘...It can't be what I think it is, right?’ I shook my head. ‘No! This can be true, I'm just so tired and having auditory hallucinations and imagining things that aren't there.’

"Mr. Baek-Yang?" The voice spoke again.

I slowly turned my head and saw a shadowy face with red eyes peering down at me. I screeched, "Don't harm me please! I'm sorry for disturbing your night! I also don't want to be here at this time!" I pleaded, my voice and body trembling. "I'm not tasty either!!!" I added as an afterthought in case the crimson eyed entity was craving for a late night snack.

"It's okay Mr. Baek-Yang! It's me. I'm not going to hurt you." The voice explained hurriedly.

‘Is it not a ghost...?’ Thinking that the voice sounded kind of familiar instead of ghostly, I took a careful peek. Han Min-Jun was standing behind me with an awkward but amused smile tugging the corners of his lips. I let out a relieved breath I didn’t know I was holding. "You scared the hell out of me Mr. Han Min-Jun!" I moved a hand over my heart and felt my heart thump against my ribcage. ‘Why does he always do this?! Maybe he really is part ghost, being so hard to detect.'

"Sorry Mr. Baek-Yang, I didn't mean to scare you." He apologized with zero genuity, judging by the way he was trying to hold back his mirth.

‘Jerk.’ "...It's okay. Just don't do it again. Give me a sign or something and don't just appear right behind me out of nowhere.” I awkwardly got back up to my feet, avoiding looking directly at Han Min-Jun. “Why are you still here anyway?"

"I left something here at the office so I had to come back for it. I was out and just got back from a late meeting with one of my clients." While he was shimmying past me to his desk I spotted Han Min-Jun clutching a plastic bag, which piqued my interest and made me wonder what was inside.

"Hm? Oh okay." ‘Then could you get out already? Even a ghost would be better company than yo-’ I thought when I heard something and glanced around with the hair on the back of my neck standing up. Unconsciously I moved closer to Han Min-Jun. “W-what was that?” I squeaked and cursed myself for it mentally.

‘Okay never mind. I'll gladly be with him if I don't have to see any ghosts.’

I heard Han Min-Jun laugh. "Don't worry, it's just the wind." He assured me.

‘Sure, that's what they always say in the movies and it's never just the wind.’ I sucked in a deep breath and forced myself to relax. "Whatever, hmm are you going home now?" I questioned him.

He studied my face for a second and grinned. "No, I'm staying to help you with your work."

I frowned at him. ‘Why would he do that for me? None of the other co-workers seemed interested.’ "I'm going to finish soon anyway so there's nothing for you to help me with."

"Two people can finish the work faster and the faster we finish, the sooner you'll get to rest." He told me like it was the most obvious thing. Well, it was... but still.

"I can handle this much by myself, so if that’s all you’d be staying here for then you can just go home." I said to him dismissively, going back to my desk.

"I'll help you as an apology for making you late for your meeting this morning Mr. Baek-Yang." He insisted. “And spooking you just now.”

‘Look at him, in the end this jerk will come up with something to get his way anyway.’
"...Fine, do what you want." I shrugged half-heartedly, ‘I'm too tired for this, help me if you want then.’

"Thank you Mr. Baek-Yang." The man practically skipped over and put the mystery plastic bag he'd been carrying on my desk, getting a chair from another cubicle to sit beside me. "Before we start, have you eaten anything yet? I brought something with me, so should we have our dinner first?" He said, pushing the bag towards me.

‘Oh so it was food. But why the hell is he thanking me when he's the one doing the helping, even going so far as to volunteer to stay behind after hours? But now that I think about it, the last time I ate something was probably at the café. ...That was hours ago. I guess I got immersed in my work.’ "Sounds good to me, Mr. Han Min-Jun."

‘Who was I to say no to free food? I was already past the point and in need of a break anyway.’ I tried very hard not to think how much I was leeching off of this man in the span of just one day.

Han Min-Jun brought the food containers out of the plastic bag and set them on the desk.

Among the dishes he brought with him I could smell the sweet aroma of honey or sugar coming from the marinating sauce accompanying the thinly sliced Bulgogi beef. The savory smell wafting from the freshly cooked Samgyeopsal raised my appetite as well. The variety of vegetables on the Bibimbap bowl's rice bed brought color to the otherwise meat centric assortment of dishes. As a finishing touch a fried egg topped everything in the bowl.
I started salivating while looking at the delicious food in front of me and Han Min-Jun’s smile was a bit too self-satisfied when he observed my reactions.

Han Min-Jun handed me a second pair of chopsticks and I quietly accepted them, diving into sampling all the different takeout foods in front of me with few reservations.
I felt the side of my face heating up from the glances the other man was sending my way. The attention was making it hard for me to enjoy the food, no matter how free it was.

"What," I questioned, sounding a bit more miffed than I actually was and put down my chopsticks, "did you have something you wanted to say?"
Han Min-Jun seemed to wake up from some sort of trance and cleared his throat, "How is the meal Mr. Baek-Yang, I hope you're enjoying it?" he asked cautiously.

"... It's tasty." I remarked gently, the good food and nostalgia warming me up. 'It was really as good as it smelled. It made me reminisce about the take out nights I used to have with my family.'

A small smile made its way on my face and I heard Han Min-Jun inhale sharply before he answered me.

"Is that so... I'm glad." The quiet of the empty office enveloped us again.
'Maybe later I'll ask him the name of the shop where he got all this, but for now I'll just enjoy the food in front of me.'

After we were done eating, we got back to finishing my work.
"So, how did your meeting with your client go this afternoon, Mr. Baek-Yang?" Han Min-Jun inquired as he checked some papers.

I didn't bother glancing at him and instead continued to stare at my monitor, "It went well, and Mrs. Jeong Ah-Reum was very understanding when I was late for our meeting." 'I'm surprised he didn't ask earlier, as he's partly at fault that I was late, hmph.'

"That's fortunate Mr. Baek-Yang, not all clients are like that." Han Min-Jun seemed slightly relieved.

"Yeah," I agreed, "I'm glad I got assigned to her." Even thinking of being late from a meeting with any other of our clients made me shiver.

My eyesight gradually clouded while I was gazing at the documents in front of me, indicating that I needed to rest. I tried blinking away my drowsiness to stay awake, but I could slowly feel myself succumbing to sleep.

                                                            (Han Min-Jun’s POV)

“Mr. Baek-Yan-” When I glanced next to me I saw Baek-Yang sleeping at his desk.
He must really be tired, so I moved my swivel chair towards him as quietly as possible.

“Mr. Baek-Yang, wake up.” I touched his shoulder and gently shook it to wake him up.
He just grunted, moving his head into a more comfortable position and continued to sleep peacefully. I carefully stood up from my chair and went to the break room to get a small blanket to cover the sleeping Baek-Yang.

I sat down and went back to the remaining documents that still needed some minor finishing touches. I glanced to the side and silently laughed as I watched Baek-Yang sleep so deeply only an arm’s reach away. ‘His sleeping face really is the cutest.’

When I was done tidying all the files on Baek-Yang’s desk, I too laid my head down on the desk and kept staring at his face until I too dozed off.

                                                                          ***

The next morning, a man arrived at the office a bit ahead of his usual schedule. He was humming as he was visibly in a good mood. When he got closer to the office, he saw Ms. Chang Jieun at the doorway and approached her. "Oh, good morning Ms. Chan- hmmpf?!" But before he could greet her properly, she covered his mouth with her hand and put her finger in front of her mouth.

"Shhh! You're going to wake them up!" She whispered hurriedly.

The man was confused. He and Ms. Chang Jieun should have been the only two people in the office this early in the morning, so who could he possibly wake up?

Ms. Chang Jieun slowly moved her hand from his mouth, and pointed towards the cubicles in the office.

When he followed the direction she was pointing at, he saw Mr. Su Baek-Yang and Mr. Han Min-Jun asleep together at Mr. Su Baek-Yang's desk. Mr. Su Baek-Yang even had a blanket placed over him. Before he had any time to comment on what he saw, Ms. Chang Jieun ushered him back to the hallway and asked him to go get some morning coffee outside with her. The break room variety was notoriously bad, so he easily agreed. It’d give the two sleeping men some privacy and more time to wake up.
