The early morning feeling of the graveyard is gloomy, the air just feels dead. Thankfully I have no one to morn so I don't have to enter the main area. I get to go to the south side of the area, it's the area that backs into the woods. It's not too hard to find because it is the one place that doesn't have any graves but instead a small field of grass and a house. That house belongs to a pair of boys who were twins. The oldest by a span of seven minutes or so is Remus and Romulus is the youngest. Both boys were extremely smart and had the potential to be anything but chose to study monsters and other kinds of creatures that happen to fall into their hands. When they were younger they Would tail the Acers who were going to kill a high-ranking monster in hopes that they could get their grubby little hands on a sample. But because they would do this too often and only follow the ones who were guaranteed to kill the creature it became a little joke between all of the Acers, because if you saw them you were sure to kill your target, and as a thanks let them take whatever they want. But they chose to be next to me the most, I was 18 when all of that happened and the boys were only 8. Like I said they are pretty smart.
I'll admit that I did miss them. So I’m excited to see them for the first time in a while. They only moved to Noctius about a year ago because they got wind of what was happening here and they wanted in on the fun. So now I get to talk with them about what we have been doing.
I arrived at their door a little later. It's a small building yet there is a large iron door lay in front of me with a sliding latch on it. I knock and the sound was a loud booming one would you know if you have ever been a jail cell in Corak. I heard a bunch of noises from behind the door, it sounds like arguing and then a loud crash. Then much louder arguing.
“Oh please come back later! We are not here!” a voice says.
“Yes yes, we are not here!! Ah, Remus don’t put that there!!” the other says.
The arguing is now more frantic than the first voice says, “If you are an Acer, get out we don't make monsters!”
I take this as my cue to pull out my trump card with them. Long ago we had a password to know if it was me coming to help them.
“I am sorry for the inconvenience boy but I have come on business terms. But do you still want me to say the password?” I asked them with a sarcastic tone.
All noise stops when I say “password”. Then I hear two people scramble to the door and in unison, they say “yes”.
“Alright” I clear my throat and take a deep breath. “Uh ok, Hydras balls” I mutter.
Gods they made that when they were young and now I have still to say it for them ten years later. But I see the latch open on the door and see a pair of eyes brown eyes, I smile at them and then the door opens for me. Two tall lanky boys meet my gaze. I see they have grown into fine young men.
“Hello, boys, you've grown,” I tell them with a smile on my face.
In response, the boys just reach in to hug me. Then they pull away from me and hurry me inside. The house is very messy, there are jars of almost everything everywhere. Tools are scattered about. The only clean place I can see is the kitchen, which means at least they are taking their health seriously. They sit me down at their breakfast table while they make tea. I have always been able to tell the boys apart even when they were younger. But now since they have grown into fine young men they have made a point to at least make themselves look different. Remus has cut his hair short to make it more workable and he now wears glasses no doubt his eyesight got worse from all the explosions he did when he was a kid. Now Romulus has kept his hair long and wears it with a low ponytail fashioned together with a tight blue ribbon. I see that his eyes color is much brighter than it used to be, showing off his different color eyes, brown and blue. A trait in their family that dates back so many generations. I feel a sense of pride when I look at them.
“I see that you boys haven’t changed too much in my absents. How is the creature studying business been?” I ask them.
“A lot has changed while you were gone, about a few years into your retirement we were barely able to get samples. Most Acers either ran away from the creatures or died,” Remus told me.
“Yes, so we quit trying to locate samples and made our way here where creature samples almost drop at our doorstep,” Romulus added.
“Sounds somewhat rewarding,” I add.
“It is until Acers come knocking at your door thinking you are killing people for parts or making monsters,” Remus says.
“Yeah that part is not fun,” Romulus murmured.
“I hate to burst your bubble but that is was Natalia told me to ask you guys about,” I shrug.
“Are you kidding me?” Remus grumbles.
“Afraid not, but I believe you. You guys know better than to create chimeras,” I answered.
“They really don't have any leads, do they? I find it so strange that they want to pin it on us even though we haven't done anything. I mean we purposely chose not to learn necromancy because of this right Remus?” Romulus groaned from the kitchen.
By this point, all of us are gathered in the kitchen. Sitting down in the one clean place in this whole house. Which is already strange to me.
“You are right brother but then again they don't know who we really are. That we have kept under wraps as best we can,” Remus responds.
“Yes yes, your family history is something I left out when I talked to them. I even stated that you guys aren’t mages,” I said.
Both of them sighed in relief. I think that there are Acers who are getting too close to them. Those boys prefer to keep their secrets especially when their mother is the famous mad scientist Daniella Dankovsky, known for making the worst of chimeras. Funny enough she is always with the current queen of Corak and her son, Javier.
“So I am meant to ask you questions, but I am going to disregard everything and just you boys how you've been. But you kinda already answered my question,” I repeated to them.
“I can give you a small rundown on what's happening with our current impairment Jessica. If you take a look at the examination table in the back room over there you can see a bunch of creature parts, if you can even call it a creature. It looks more like a monster and not one we have ever seen” Remus …
I walk over to the dark room next to the kitchen, one of the boys followed me and lit up the dark room. To my horror, I see almost an entire carcass of a dead thing. This is only what I can assume is their new experiment.
“As you can tell we only have a few pieces of these things and as much as we want to look for the rest, we won't because we value our lives now. Especially since Rom got a little boyfriend,” Remus ruffles his brother's hair.
“Hey! That's my business and now is not a good time to talk about this over a dead body!” Romulus shouts.
“Yes I am happy for you Romulus, but I have more concerns about the dead creature right here…” I pointed to the large beast on the table.
“Ah yes well that thing or whatever was found in the forest near us. Funny enough we didn't even go that far in, only went to pick up some herbs that grow next to us. Well, Romulus found it because he screamed like a little baby when he saw it. You should have seen it, it was already torn apart by a possible predator,” Remus went on with a little more excitement than his brother.
“Oh hells, if that thing has a predator I don't ever want to come near it! I mean look at the size of this thing it almost takes up this room!” I gesture towards the long arm that has a whole table just to itself.
“That's the thing Jess, we think that this one might have been weaker,” Remus takes me to the table that contains half of what I can assume chest of this beast. “Look at it, it has defined rib changes and bones. Meaning it could have been malnourished! And it also means that it might just be smaller too!” Remus just goes on like a giddy little schoolboy.
“These are only things you could figure out Remus…” I sigh.
“Yes yes the bone structure is all me but Rom does have his own things to add, so if you please brother. You have the floor dear brother,” Remus bows towards his brother.
Romulus looked a little anxious when his name was called. He was already fidgeting in his spot. Remus was always the one who did all the talking while Romulus was the silent brain.
“It is ok Romulus take all the time your need,” I say to him
He smiles and walks over to where Remus was standing to begin his lecture on the monster's biology.
