Wendy walked over to her bed and sat down. She began swinging her legs.
“So. . .are you going to live with Bethany and me in the palace?” Wendy asked, looking at her black slip-on shoes.
“No. I live with my father and Dylan,” Nick said.
“Oh.”
“But, I can come visit you, if you’d like?”
“Really?” Wendy said, looking up from her shoes. “I mean that would be nice, since I don’t have any other friends yet.” Wendy looked back down at her shoes, suddenly embarrassed. “I don’t know if I’m ready to be a princess, again.”
“Weren’t you a princess before you got kidnapped?” Nick asked.
“Yes. . .but that was four years ago,” Wendy said. “I’m now 14.”
“I’m sure, you’ll be a great princess,” Nick said reassuringly, walking over to Wendy. Wendy looked up.
“Thanks,” Wendy said, looking into Nick’s dark brown eyes.
Nick slowly leaned in closer to Wendy’s face. Their noses touched. Then before Wendy or Nick knew what was happening, their lips met. The kiss was soft and sweet and quick.
Nick pulled back after the kiss, embarrassed. Wendy watched as Nick looked down at his feet in embarrassment.
Wendy put her hand out to grab a hold of Nick’s face and lift it back up towards hers.
Nick quickly said, “I’m sorry. . .I don’t know what happened. . .I just. . .”
Wendy kissed Nick again and then said, “I’m not. I like you, Nick.” Wendy smiled.
Nick smiled back and then said, “I like you, too, Wendy.” Wendy stood up from the bed and wrapped her arms around his neck. Nick wrapped his arms around Wendy’s waist and kissed her some more. Wendy and Nick kissed for what seemed like only minutes.
Nick then broke the kiss and said, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
“Yes,” Wendy said, bringing Nick into another long kiss.
After the kiss was over, Nick and Wendy walked down the hospital stairs and into the lobby joining the others. Ethan, Bethany, Caroline, and Dylan were all there waiting for them.
Nick took Wendy’s hand in his and walked towards them.
“There you too are!” Ethan said. “It took you guys long enough.”
“Sorry to keep you all waiting,” Wendy said.
“It’s ok. We aren’t in a hurry. Ethan, why don’t you help Wendy and Nick with their bags?” Bethany asked, gesturing to the suitcases that Wendy and Nick were holding.
“Sure,” Ethan said, walking over to Wendy and Nick. He took the suitcases from them and walked towards the wooden carriage outside.
Ethan then put the suitcases in the trunk at the back of the wooden carriage and said, “Are we ready to go?”
Bethany glanced at the others and they all nodded in agreement. “Looks like it,” Bethany said. “Well, let’s get going.”
Dylan opened the door and all of them filed inside the carriage. They sat down on the velvet seats on the opposite sides of the carriage.
Ethan and Bethany sat together along with Wendy. Caroline, Dylan, and Nick sat together on the opposite side of them.
“Have you found our other sisters yet?” Wendy asked Bethany.
“I’m afraid not. I have all the palace patrols looking for them,” Bethany answered.
“Oh, that’s a shame,” Wendy said looking down at her shoes. “I really miss them.”
“I do too,” Bethany said, wrapping an arm around Wendy and bringing her head to her chest. Wendy laid her head on Bethany’s chest and a few tears escaped her eyes.
“I miss Rayn braiding my hair and her singing the song I was named after while she was braiding my hair.”
“Would you like me to braid your hair?” Bethany asked, holding a hair tie. “And sing, of course.”
“I would like that very much,” Wendy said, sitting up so that Bethany could begin braiding her hair.
Bethany then began to braid and sing. . .
“Sweet little Wendy, Poised and true, Beautiful beyond the flowers that bloom, Sweet little Wendy, As energetic as the breeze, Playing with all the other boys and girls, Sweet little Wendy, Strong and Brave, Smart and Kind too, Sweet little Wendy---” Bethany sang. Everyone watched as Bethany repeated the song over and over as she braided Wendy’s beautiful silver-white hair. The ride seemed to go by faster as Bethany sang on, even when she was finished braiding Wendy’s hair. Bethany kept singing until Wendy fell asleep in her arms.
