Screwed It Up

Screwed It Up

Mar 08, 2022

(WARNING: MILD LANGUAGE)

Theodora pushed open the thick school doors. They were cold from the freezing wind that blew past every now and then. She hated school. She hated the people in it. She hated the classes. The teachers.

Automatically, her eyes drifted to the blonde who smiled obnoxiously as her friend said something stupid. She sat at a cafeteria table, sporting a brown plaid skirt and a brown sweater.

She hated... the stupid teens.

Theodora bit her lip as she walked past her as a way to keep herself silent.

She hated... Georgia.

Theodora nodded, clenching her fists in her jacket pockets. Yeah, she hated everyone and everything. She hated Yana. She hated the world.

That's what she told herself, anyway.

----------

Slowly, Theodora's eyes drifted as her head slumped against the desk. She was tired, and Mr. Jefferson's droning hadn't helped. Plus, it was pre-cal. Was she supposed to pay attention?

When she had turned in all her missing work, Jefferson had a shocked look on his face, as if he just couldn't believe that she had actually done the work. To be honest, it had kind of ticked her off, but she didn't say anything.

If she kept this up, maybe her grades would rise, and maybe her dumbass school wouldn't expell her. Maybe then, she could graduate, move on with life, and forget these hellish years.

She groaned internally as she thought about how she would keep this up. Georgia was smart. Too smart. Smart enough that all Theo wanted to do when she talked about academics was smack her across the face with a textbook.

But the blonde was helpful. Beneficial, even. She would use her, she decided.

"Theodora!" Mr. Jefferson clapped, knocking her out of her thoughts. She stared daggers into him as he crossed his arms. "I know you probably want me dead, but looks can't kill, Theo." He rolled his eyes. He pointed to the board.

"Answer this for me."

Her eyes flickered to the board, which she hadn't even looked at since she walked in. Her throat went dry as she looked at the jungle of numbers on the smart board. There was a lot of 'x's and 'y's on the board, but they might as well have had the whole alphabet up there.

Theo leaned back in her chair, shaking her head. "I won't."

She had found it less embarrassing to say she wouldn't, rather than to say she couldn't. Maybe if there weren't so many judgemental teens watching her every time she was called on, she'd be honest and admit she had no idea what the hell she was doing.

"Excuse me?" Mr. Jefferson's eyes narrowed and he lowered his hand. "I asked you to come up and answer this."

Theo rolled her eyes. "And I said I'm not going to." She kept her lips in a tight line as she felt her blood warm. She could feel everyone's eyes on her. She hated it.

He sighed and slowly made his way to the door, opening it. "Get out of my class, Theodora."

She quickly grabbed her backpack, slinging it over her shoulder. She didn't look back as his classroom door was slammed behind her.

She was a disappointment, but she didn't care. She only wanted to get out of this trashy school. She wanted to leave this town and never think about it ever again. This place was only a hell hole of bad memories and experiences for her.

It always would be.

-----------

She wandered the halls aimlessly. It was quiet aside from the sudden squeak of her shoe or the laughter from other classes as she passed by.

She slowed next to an English class. Students were in groups, probably working on a project. Friend groups laughed, and poked fun at one another. A kid even threw a glue stick across the class, earning a holler from the teacher.

Her frown deepened as she glazed over all the smiling faces. Even if she was in class, it would never be that fun.

Hell, no one talked to her. No one wanted her as a partner, she was stupid and had nothing to contribute. All she ever added to any project was her name at the top. No one wanted her, period. Not even Yana, who had been with her since middle school.

"Georgia? Where are you going?" Someone piped from the class room. "Do not leave my classroom, Georgia!"

She blinked and the obnoxious blonde was in front of her, closing the door to the classroom. She shifted the backpack strap on her shoulder and grabbed Thoe's wrist, pulling her down the hall.

"What are you doing?" She asked, stumbling along down the hall with the silent blonde.

Something in her froze when Georgia had looked back, a small smile on her face. "Skipping class with you, duh."

Theodora's lips twitched and then slowly formed a small smile. This girl was an idiot. She was a stupid, dumb, blonde who didn't mind her own business. She wanted to spend time with her? No one with their head screwed on right would want to do that, how crazy was she?

Georgia only slowed when they reached the end of the athletic hall, pushing open the doors to the track and field area. All of the athletic classes were held in the morning, so there was no one there.

There, under a tall tree with too many leaves to make much sense, Georgia let go of her hand and sat down.

They were quiet as they sat down, comfortably leaning against the bark of the tree, and stretching outwards so that the tips of their dirtied sneakers were soaked by the sun.

Georgia unzipped her bag, pulling out a notebook book and mechanical pencil. "Damn," She cursed as her lead snapped. She didn't dwell on it for long and continued to scratch notes onto the sheet of paper.

"What are you doing?" Theo asked, lolling her head against the bark of the tree.

"Writing basic trigonometry questions." She answered, not looking up from her paper. "That's what you came to get me for, right? You wanted more tutoring?"

Theo frowned. "What? No?" She laughed. "I got kicked out of math class and I was wandering the halls. I didn't even know you were in that class." She flinched when Georgia smiled at her, one eyebrow raised. "Honestly," She insisted.

Georgia rolled her eyes. "You couldn't even humor me a little?"

Theodora leaned closer to the blonde, pushing her hair out of her face, letting her hand rest on the other girl's forehead. "You want me to humor you?" She cocked her head, watching the blonde.

Georgia blinked. "Your eyes are two different colors, you know?" She squinted, leaning in closer. "One's brown, and the other's a blue gray." She used her fingers to widen the ginger's eyes. "Kind of hard to see, though."

Both of the girls jumped away from one another as someone bent down to their level. Theodora's eyes caught the chest of the girl through her shirt and she immediately knew who it was. Only one person she had ever known had her birthmark on her left breast.

Theo squeezed her eyes as she remembered what it felt like to thumb that dark piece of skin, under the warmth of covers and their own body heat and-

"Whatcha up to, Theo?" Yana asked, a frown on her tanned features. Her black hair fell into her face, making her eyes look even darker. "Moving on so fast, huh? Looking for someone else to fuel your stupid dreams and ego?"

Theo shrunk into the bark of the tree, pulling her knees up to her chest. "I'm not, Yana. Tutoring." She gestured to the notebook in Georgia's lap. "I'm trying to get my grades up, actually."

Yana stood straight, her hands in the pockets of her black sweatpants. She turned to Georgia who had looked less than impressed the whole interaction.

"She's using you, you know?" She jabbed her thumb at Theo who sat silently. "She's going to get her grades up, ditch you, and two months later she won't even remember your name."

Georgia smiled. "I know." Her bright brown eyes bored into Yana's dark abyss of eyeballs. "I'm using her too. For experiences. I've checked a lot off my bucket list since I met her." She threw up her fingers, counting them.

"Driving a bloodied stranger home, sneaking through bedroom windows, bandaging someone up, falling asleep in a girl's room, and I've given advice." She grinned as Yana's face twisted into one of distain.

It was clear Yana didn't care much for the blonde.

"She's been in your room?" Yana asked, bewilderment on her beautiful face.

Theo pulled a scoff from deep inside her. "What the hell do you care, Yana?" Theo stood, stepping up to the shorter brunette. "You left, remember? You left me at a party, and said you never wanted to see me again. So why the fuck did you come over?" Theo felt her insides grumble. This time, she couldn't find it in her to forgive her ex.

Yana's eyes widened, genuine surprise slapping her in the face. She furrowed her brows. "Don't cuss at me, Theo! I don't know who you think you are but-"

Theodora cut her off by pulling her by the collar of her sweater. "I'm your ex, Yana. So don't think you can come bud in on my life, when you were the one who walked out of it." She growled. "What I do is my business, so stay out of it."

Tears pricked her eyes as she screamed at the brunette. "You screwed me up! So just leave already! I can't stand looking at you!" She pushed her away, pain echoing in her voice. "Six years down the drain because you couldn't communicate! Because you couldn't tell me what you wanted, what I did wrong!"

This time, Yana's angered voice rose. "Don't pin the blame all on me, Theodora! Sure, at first, you were the perfect girlfriend! Then, all you cared about was fighting, winning!" She threw her hands up, mocking laughter building into hysterical cackles. "Obsessing over a future we wouldn't have because you weren't in our present, Theo!"

Yana cried, tears flooding down her face, her mascara draining with it. "You suck, Theo! It's been five days!" She pointed at Georgia who had returned her attention to her drawn notes. "And here you are! I see you from across the field, literally inches away from bubble blonde's face! Did six years mean nothing?"

Theo laughed. "It obviously meant nothing to you! You didn't even try to talk to me! Everything you were feeling, you built it up and then just threw me in, and then blamed me for drowning!"

Georgia finally stood, fixing her skirt. "How about both of you calm down?" She didn't even glance at Yana as she growled at her, anger bubbling up in the brunette's chest. Her eyes were focused on Theo who looked like crumbling mess.

Theo breathed heavily, her lungs wore out from screaming. Her eyes were red and wild, looking between Georgia and Yana who was just a disheveled as she was.

"This doesn't concern you, bubble blonde." Yana puffed, swiping her hair out of her face.

"Stop calling her that, Yana! Her name is Georgia! God damnit, have some decency!" Theo hollered.

Yana scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Oh, you're sticking up for her now?" She threw her arms up. "You know what, Theo?" She flipped her middle fingers up as she backed away, tears and snot dripping from her face. "Screw you and your new girlfriend!"

Georgia huffed and turned to Theo. "You know, her words would be a whole lot more threatening if she wasn't leaking from her face holes."

Theo cried as she dropped against the bark of the tree. She buried her head in her knees. "I screwed it up." She sobbed, gripping her head.

I have a joke for you, dear reader.
What do you get when two idiots who see each other as amusing, yet annoying toys use each other to benefit in their own ways, only to end up falling head over heels for one another?
An idiotic "enemies" to lovers story.
Funny joke, right?
Georgia wants to be less boring, Theodora just wants to graduate and disappear.
