Crying, I kept yelling out Hali’s name as I kept falling. A sudden wave of snow pillowed into my right side, like an avalanche in mid-air, it pushed me towards, the main street area, where cars were driving on the road. Screaming and crying, I fell to the ground. The pulled impact from the avalanche caused my body to continue to roll with ongoing traffic. A motorcycle was passing my body, as it gently stopped and my back and head slammed into the side. That was going to leave a bruise… crying in pain, as I gasp for air, on the concrete ground.
The motorcyclist grabbed me by the shirt collar, “What the hell are you doing? Come on let’s go!” persisted the mysterious driver. Recognizing the voice, it was Hali. I got on the back and held her waist tightly. She cranked the steering bar twice, and the bike began to move down the road.
“Hali? It’s Hali right?” I yelled loudly so I can be louder than the wind that was blowing at our faces.
“Yes, it’s me Hali Aubin. We got to get out of here!” She confirmed back. Relieved, I looked behind me. There was Detective Knight watching us turn the corner. She jumped off the building’s ledge, falling she faced the ground and began to shriek. The sounds of her shriek resonated across the neighborhood. She was using her shriek to cause herself from falling to the ground. Almost like a supersonic sound, the sound reflected and slow down the speed of her falling.
“Hali, she’s coming!” I informed my driver. The motorcycle roared harder, the wind began to blow harder onto our bodies. As we turned left into the next intersection, the light just turned red. The vehicles around us began to decelerate and brake. Turning my view towards the back, I saw Detective Knight in a black Honda Civic speeding towards us. Did she steal the car? She began to drive recklessly, crashing into other cars and cutting lanes, to close gap the between us.
A sudden jolt stopped the motorcycle. We stopped moving because of the red light. Hali stretched out her right arm; lanes of ice began to spray off her fingers. She was creating a road to escape, quickly touching the wheels it glowed for a second and we drove up the new road. It was a narrow path, either of us can fall anytime, but we kept ongoing. The ice road was paved upwards, creating a path over all the cars. Speeding up the hill, Hali shouted behind me, “Hold on!”
A sudden drop caused my head to crank back, as I saw the scenery gravitate upwards to downwards. I screamed in surprise, squeezing my eyes shut and gripping tighter around Hali’s waist. Another shriek sounded behind us. This time Detective Knight was out of the vehicle, using her powers to push the vehicles out of her way. She was hurting innocent people. People screamed in horror, behind my back, I turned back around trying not to look. We landed several blocks ahead, turning right again, towards the labyrinth.
Hali continued to drive in top speed, as we finally arrived at the labyrinth. I saw Uncle Earl in the distance. He was waving his hands, guns rested upright beside him. Man, was I glad to see him! The motorcycle braked and stopped humming. I pulled off the helmet and threw it on the ground, running towards Uncle Earl for embracement. Relieved, I was so glad he was safe. We embraced for a couple of minutes, I buried my face into his chest, feeling comforted.
“There’s no time, we have to go. Up ahead is the trail, there should be a car that we can use.” Hali interrupted. Both of us looking at Hali, we nodded and began to run towards the trail. Uncle Earl in the front, he pointed his gun towards the path for safety. Hali was behind me as we continue to sprint on the trail. We finally reached the car, it was hidden between bushes. It was a black SUV. Hali got into the driver seat, I got in the back. Uncle Earl took the passenger.
Quickly pulling out her keys, she shoved it into the car keyhole and the SUV hummed. Turning the steel wheel to the right instantaneously, we drove over bushes and shrubs. The car rocked up and down on the ground. This continued for ten minutes, finally hitting the main road we sped down. Hali drove so fast, there were times the car flew in mid-air. I looked behind us, there were no more pursuers. Convinced, I relaxed and rested my head against the car window. We cut through Golden Ears Park, into Port Coquitlam. Our destination was Vancouver, which was what Hali told me.
“For now we need to lie low somewhere overnight,” Hali said while her eyes glued on the road. We all sat in silence, not sure where to go. Uncle Earl and I have never left the Pitt Meadows area. Together we had such a quiet and peaceful life together. Thinking back on it, I leaned back and closed my eyes. We spent a lot of fun times together. He was like a father to me. I remember there was a time when I was younger, we were at the docks, and my uncle was teaching me how to fish. I sat between his legs, as our feet were suspended above the waters. We waited quietly for fish to catch our bait. I didn’t have the patience like Uncle Earl, after ten minutes I began making a fuss about no fish in the water.
“Juvia…” was remembering Uncle Earl speaking to me, “Trust me, we will catch some fish today.” So I waited, excited to see what kind of fish we were going to catch. Trusting on his words, I sat there and continued to wait with patience. Suddenly the fishing rod’s string pulled into the water, Uncle Earl and my handheld tight to the rod. Together we pulled the fish out, it was a trout. The fish scales glistened in the sun, as it was pulled out in a jumping stance. While my uncle reeled in the fish, I grabbed the net so he can place it in.
“Maybe we can stay at a motel.” Uncle Earl suggested. I snapped back to reality. Hali shook her head. “That’s not a good idea, if they are with the police right now it means they may have surveillance under our bank accounts,” Hali answered. A zip noise came from Uncle Earl’s bag; he pulled out wads of cash. “I don’t trust banks.” He smiled, “I was going to use this when Juvia was going to college, but I guess using a little wouldn’t hurt for a night at a motel.” Hali chuckled in surprise, “We can always count on you Earl.” She turned into a gas station. We walked in to ask the cashier if there were any cheap motels nearby. Uncle Earl did the talking; he was always a smooth talker. Everyone at the bars knew the name Earl.
I decided to grab a few items, drinks, candy bars, and chips while Hali was filling the car with gas. There was an old fashion television stationed in the corner of the store. It was an older television so it didn’t have the 4K or High Definition quality that you can get at the stores today. I walked to the counter where Uncle Earl was speaking to the cashier. They just finished their conversation. Uncle Earl pulled out some cash from his bag and paid for the items I picked up.
After we thanked the cashier for the information, we walked towards the exit. The man working behind the cash register picked up the remote and switched to the local news channel. On the screen was my name and Hali on the motorcycle with the helmet on though. The news was saying a mysterious woman on a motorcycle kidnapped me, and I’m missing in action. It also said that Hali might have been a terrorist and I’ve been taking in as a hostage. Uncle Earl saw this and wrapped his arms around my shoulders to cover my face again from the cashier. Without looking back we calmly saunter towards Hali as she was finishing up filling the tank. Hali looked at us blankly, Uncle Earl gestured, “Hali, the news.” Hali looked towards the store; she saw the television that had a picture of her in the motorcycle outfit. She looked down at her clothes and cursed, “Shit. Did you figure out the place to hide for now?”
