Uncle Earl nodded and answered, “Just down the block from here there is a motel. They only take cash, they don’t ask for names because it’s a place for hookers and customers to make business. That’s probably the best place to lay low for now.” We all climbed into the SUV. Hali turned the keys in the keyhole and the car came to life. Slowly we turned left at the corner and drove down the block. A couple of minutes later, we arrived at a motel called Sleepy Motels. Uncle Earl walked in first to get us rooms.
Hali and I both sat in the car in silence. I looked at her and asked, “The woman who came after me, were they from Caedenbitus?” She shook her head quickly moving her body to gain eye contact with me she patted my hand.
“I don’t know what’s going on as much as you. When you told me about the police officers at the school, it didn’t make sense. When I came to get both you and Uncle Earl that day, there was nobody in sight. If there was, someone would have called the school patrol officer, or 911. Everything you saw today, the police would have acted yesterday. I know this because after you went back to sleep, I went back to your school to search for more clues. There were no signs of any changes like police, ambulance, nothing. The woman that came after us, I never saw her before in Cultor Nemorum, but it’s a high chance she is with the group Caedenbitus.” Hali explained as she continued to pat my hand, trying to comfort me.
This made sense. The police showing up out of the blue, the interesting part was if there was a terrorist attack let’s say and they knew I was involved, why didn’t they just come to the house? So was Caedenbitus working with the police? If that was the case, it was hard to hide from them then. How did Hali know that the information I gave her through the text was a threat to me? There was a possibility that I was just overreacting. Another thought came to mind if they were working together. I’ve seen them in criminal documentaries where they corner criminals with the help of citizens who were store owners and…motels and stuff.
“If the police are working with Caedenbitus, can’t they just tell all the nearby stores and motels to watch out for the three of us?” I asked. Uncle Earl was taking a long time; we both looked at each other and bolted out of the car. Dashing towards the entrance we opened the door to a group of police in weapons and bulletproof gear pointing the gun at Uncle Earl’s neck. When I looked towards my right, the employees of the motel were tied and bruised up in the corner, passed out. All guns were pointed at the three of us, making me unable to move.
“Don’t move! Or we will shoot!” the officer stood there shoving the gun tighter on Uncle Earl’s neck. Uncle Earl winced. I had no idea what to do. I looked over at Hali. Her face was crumpled with anger and frustration. A sudden clap silenced the room, Detective Shao entranced around the corner.
His face began to melt, his fellow coworkers twisted in disgust. The gunned men were all surprised and distracted when Uncle Earl elbowed the man holding him in the face and grabbed the gun. He ran towards us, turned and pointed the gun towards the police. Alert again they pointed the guns towards us, but this time also to the melted Detective Shao. He has melted into a little boy. He looked around twelve years old. He had brown hair with bright green eyes, his skin was almost as clear as glass.
One of the police officers yelled out, “FIRE!” Multiple flashes of bullets brightened the room. When the bullets stopped firing, all the police officers fell to the ground. The little boy snapped his fingers and reflections around the room appeared. Uncle Earl disappeared from our side and appeared on his. His mirror tricked him in running in the wrong direction. The boy swiped his two fingers up, a piece of glass that rebounded on the floor stabbed into Uncle Earl’s shoulder.
Uncle Earl howled in agony. The little boy pulled out cuffs from his pockets and cuffed my uncle and pushed him to the ground and kicked him until he passed out. I screamed, but Hali pulled me back.
“What the fuck are you doing? Hali you just going to let this happen and do nothing?” I wailed as she kept holding me back. She put her lips near my ear and whispered, “Juvia, I want you to trust me right now. I need you to calm down. Okay?” I glared at her. How can I? She’s just watching this all happen. But right now, I didn’t have a choice. I had no idea what to do. I stopped resisting, and asked, “Okay, what do we have to do?” She nodded.
Suddenly a burst of loud laughter came from the kid, he said, “Finally, I’ve found you, Juvia Elias. No. Princess Juvia of the Creaturae Kingdom, if you want this human alive you’re going to have to come with me.” Hali pushed me forward, I turned in disbelief. I walked towards the young boy, and asked, “At least tell me your name and who are you working for?”
He looked at me and smirked. “My name is Glass Crystavol, and I am Caedenbitus Lieutenant from Squad Number twelve. Now come with me, bitch.” Glass…is it because he can control glass? I mean the mirrors as reflection, and glass to reflect. That’s glass right?
“Why is your name Glass? Is it because your powers are manipulating glass?” I asked. I couldn’t help it, it was itching. Hali tried to muffle her laughter as the little boy cried in rage. The broken glass shards that were ricochet from the bullets earlier began to tremble and suspend in the air. Finally when they all pointed towards my direction…Uh oh…
Out of habit, I pushed my hands in front of my face. A prickling sensation poked through my two palms and a whirlpool began to form, but this time the vortex was smaller. It sucked in all the glass shards and circled it clockwise until all the glass flew out from the sides of the whirlpool. Hali had already sneaked passed him and was dragging Uncle Earl’s body to the corner. When I looked back at Glass he was already in front of me and a wide glass pane appeared pushing me into the wall. He kept pushing, my body couldn’t move almost like he using gravity to push the invisible wall to crush me.
Glass began to conjure up multiple glass daggers and stabbed each one passed the invisible wall and into my flesh. My hands, arms, upper arms, shins, thighs, and shoulders, he stabs and then slowly dig inches into the flesh. I yelped in discomfort. Remembering Hali pushing me earlier made me cry, “Hali!” I cried her name over and over as the little boy began to use my stomach as a punching bag.
“Hali!” he mocked, “She’s probably not coming back. He just took the dude and ran. My boss told me I needed to keep you alive, but he never said uninjured. So for fucking insulting me earlier, I’m going to have some fun with you before I even call my boss.” Punching again, I finally puked from the pain. Why do these people like punching or kneeing me in the stomach? Giving up hope from Hali coming back, I just spat in Glass’s face. He posted a barrier to protect him from my spit and smirked. This time he conjured another piece of glass dagger. I don’t know where he was going to put this one, because my limbs were all injured already.
The temperature of the room dropped significantly suddenly. “Juvia, I want you to trust me right now.” Her words came to my mind. Glass didn’t notice the change of temperature and he cut into my left temple towards the corners of my mouth. “Let’s make you look like a bad guy. What’s that clown guy you know, the evil one that’s always smiling in those comic books?” Glass cackled. Moving my head out of the sharp edges way, Glass grabbed my face to keep it in place.
The sharp edge of the blade grew closer to my face again; suddenly Glass stopped moving and fell on me. Behind him, was Hali she was holding a syringe. Her face grunted in sorrow, as she pulled out each dagger from my limbs. I muffled my scream at every pull. After all of them were pulled out I dropped into Hali’s warm arms. She began to cry, apologizing over and over. “I couldn’t think of anything else. It was either Earl dying or your suffering before I can come back. I wish I could have come back faster. Weakly, I got up. “We got to go; if someone sees us they are going think we killed all these men.” Hali nodded. We tied Glass up and threw him in the trunk. The manager, Hali quickly froze his injuries and then healed him. She was sweating, probably because she was tired from all the running and fighting. I was tired too. Uncle Earl, he was unconscious in the back seat of SUV. I pulled the glass shard out, while Hali healed him also. Hali only had enough powers left to just close up my wounds.
After untying the motel worker, we both ran back to the SUV and drove off into the sunset. We sat in silence, as the wind blew into the car. Hali opened her mouth and looked at me a couple of times, but no words came out. When the sun was set, the moon began to peek. Hali stopped by an old apartment area. There was nobody around.
“Where are we?” I asked her. “Surrey.” She answered. She glanced at my wounds and scratched her head. “Hali I’m sorry. I didn’t come back fast enough. I know I told you to trust me, but…” she paused. Her face twisted in agony again, and she hugged me. Her platinum blonde hair caressed my face as she pressed her hands against the back of the head and back. When she pulled back, her hair became silver under the moonlight and glistened like snow at night. I sighed and assured “You said to trust you remember? I know it was harsh of you to push me earlier like that, but you probably did that because you trusted me too. Even though we haven’t known each other for that long, but I see you as family Hali.” I smiled as I lightly punched her shoulder. Her eyes sparkled like icicles and she embraced me one more time.
“So General Aubin, what’s the plan now?” I questioned. Hali frowned. She sighed, “Fine since you trust me I guess I will tell you everything from now on. We are going to move Glass’s body while he is still unconscious and wait till he wakes up.”
“What are we going to do with him when he wakes up?” I continued to pester.
“You really want to know?” she seriously questioned me. I nodded instantly.
“Torture him, for information. How he found you already, and who he is working for. We still don’t know who the leader of Caedenbitus is, but with his information we might be able to get information about where your brother and sisters are.” Hali said calmly. She pulled out the empty syringe she used on Glass earlier, “This syringe has my ice powers in it. It works as a curse to freeze all the energy our powers come from temporarily. It also sedates them, almost like when bears hibernate in the wintertime.” she explained.
This moment as I got out of the car, I looked up to the moon. Mother, Father if you are listening. Right now, I’m okay but I hope trusting in Hali is the right choice right now. Sometimes, I feel like she doesn’t tell me everything.
