Oh My Ghost! Webtoon Adaptation

Uninvited, Unrequited? (IV: Recognition)

Uninvited, Unrequited? (IV: Recognition)

Mar 14, 2022

Later, at Loi's residence, Maya lurked unconvincingly around the young Shunta as if she knew him well.
"Boo! ...what are you doing?" she said, quite puzzled at what the youth was staring at. The boy frowned and carelessly spat some words out. "I'm playing Kekémon GO...why do you care?" Maya leaned in to inspect this "Kekémon" and ascertain what exactly it meant to "play" it. "I've never heard of that before, good luck anyway..." Shunta pursed his lips to a snarling pout of concentration. "I WILL catch this Kekémon!"

The Keké Ball flew out to ensnare the plucky monster. Seconds passed like hours as the catch screen cycled through the monster's attempts to spring free of its temporary imprisonment. Gone as soon as it came, the ball disappeared in a puff of air and the monster stood defiantly in the fore once again. Shunta bristled, offended by his supposed inability. "What?! It escaped? No way..." he said, exasperated. He began to cry fat, drenching tears. Maya noticed his dismay and attempted to comfort the youth. "Please don't cry...it's only a game. Wait! I know...Loi can help you catch that Kekémon." Maya reassured.

The pair ventured over to where Loi was standing and posed a question for assistance to him instead.
"Huh? Kekémon? Hah, no sweat...I'm the Kekémon master. Leave it to me, you'll have it in no time."
Quickly, Loi's efforts were all foiled, the determined Kekémon taunting him from the center of the screen.
"Huh...I didn't expect that. This one is simply too hard to catch, Shunta." Loi sighed and lowered his head.
"You suck! You're a great big liar!" Shunta snapped. Loi became serious and held up a challenging digit. "Once more!" he clamored. Another escape. "Again!"

The Kekémon genuinely seemed unable to catch now. "That's impossible!" Loi vented. "You're a huge loser, what a noob!" Shunta leveled at him. Maya beamed and offered her attempt. "Let me try, you two!" She stared at the screen carefully and replicated the motions that Loi and Shunta made. It was all settled with a satisfying click as the ball retained its target. "Look! I caught the Kekémon! It's so adorable!" Maya cheered. Loi and Shunta flushed and grew hot. Shunta turned to Loi. The pair shared a glance together. "Not only did she get that rare Kekémon, she got both of us as well...she's cuter than any Kekémon."

Shunta walked betwixt the pair as Maya and Loi were en route to a destination. They didn't tell the boy where they were going, it was supposedly a surprise. A valiant green plume of foliage peeked out the corner as they rounded it. From just beyond the tree, a slide, swings and other elements of play could be seen nearby. "Wow! A playground!" Shunta exclaimed. "Go ahead, play with the other kids," Loi encouraged. Shunta peered out into the playground and caught a particularly striking scene.

Two young parents were readily engaged in play with their young one. Shunta felt a twinge in his chest as his face became sullen, a stark contrast to the happiness. "No, let's go. I'm not in the mood anymore." Maya, visibly concerned, asked what was amiss. "Shunta, how can we just up and leave, we just got here...what's the matter?" Loi stepped in front of her and picked up on Shunta's request. "If you'd like to leave instead, we can do that." "Eh? But why?" Maya peeped, confusedly.

Back home, the young boy huddled into himself reflexively. Maya, ever the doting lady she was, sat beside him supportively, sensing the mood. "What's wrong, Shunta? Didn't the park look fun?" Shunta furrowed his brow and lowered his eyes. "At the park earlier, I was so jealous of the kid...he was having fun with his mom and dad... You see, our father left us when I was four and my mom is so busy with work...she doesn't have enough time for me...I understand that my mom works hard for my sake but it just makes me feel so lonely," he sobbed. Maya closed her eyes softly and smiled gently. "Don't say that, you have us - Loi and I will be here for you always, think of us as your second family." Shunta sniffed and opened his eyes wide, smiling too. "Really? My second family? You'd do that for me?" Then he crossed his arms. "That would suck! ...But thank you Maya Onee-chan..." he beamed.

Kenta and Jaja arrived at the house as if they were simply passing through, not at all unlike them.
"Sup' guys!" Kenta chirped happily, before his eyes began to grow wide with astonishment. He rushed to Loi and hastily whispered into his ear without delay. "Loi! Is that your son?!" Loi grimaced at the weight of the misunderstanding. "No, you idiot!" he roared under his breath. "Who's this trash, huh?" Shunta interrupted.
Kenta was taken aback by the sudden insult. "Hey, he just called me trash! How rude! What's with him?"

Shunta giggled and turned to Maya. "Hey, hey...did you know that trash could talk?" Maya smoothly went along with his prompting. "Wow~ Really? Stay away from that trash for your safety, Shunta, he might be contagious or something..." Loi began laughing gleefully behind Kenta's back.Shunta turned his assault to Jaja. "Who is this ug..." Jaja's eyes narrowed to sharp points before reopening to reveal glowing rage burning steadily in their place. Shunta shuddered as the realization set in. "My intinct tells me I should be nice to her, or else I'm dead for sure," he mused in his mind.

"Tsk, one wrong move and he's dead..." Kenta breathed. Loi had a cold sweat starting on his face. "Poor kid..." Shunta ran to Maya's side and began a warm dialogue. "Maya, is she your friend? She's so beautiful!" Maya smiled and replied "Yes, and her name is Jaja." Jaja rushed over and lofted Shunta excitedly. "How SWEET! He called me beautiful! So nice..." she beamed with a sparkling expression on her face. Shunta sighed with relief. "Near death experience..." "He made the right choice..." Kenta mused quietly. "That was close, but good job, kid..." Loi added.

A sprawling piece of suburban architecture, Kenta's house emerged out of the side of a nearby hillside as the triumphant form every bit as confident as its young presenter. "Welcome to my house! Feel at home, okay?" Kenta flung his arm out over the facade behind him. "Ehehehehe...why isn't anyone saying anything?" Jaja and Maya stood stunned silent. Jaja nudged Maya. "...is this really Kenta's house? I've never been here." Maya, equally shocked added: "...it's so big." She floated over to Loi, noting his plain appearance.
"You don't seem surprised...You already knew Kenta was from a rich family, is that it?" she plodded. "Of course...we've been friends for the last six years." Loi gestured to the others and they headed inside.

Everyone else marveled at the idyllic cerulean waters of the swimming pool before Shunta thundered into it. SPLASH! "WOOOOOOO Swimming pool! You're the best! Thank you trash!" Shunta yelled out. Loi and Kenta stood at the poolside looking out. "Where's Jaja and Maya?" Kenta asked Loi. "Maybe they're still in the changing room?" he replied. The girls appeared at the poolside freshly bikini clad.

Jaja wore a soft lilac bikini accented with a centrally tied rouge-tinted pink bow matching her hair. Her comfortable swim shorts resembled the colour of a mint milkshake or sea green paint and tied with a small white flower. Maya's delicate violet brazier top was completed by a simple flower blooming out of the middle and finished with matching violet swim shorts fastened with a flowering bow, the twin to Jaja's sweet ensemble. "Sorry for the wait, guys!" Jaja called to the pair. Maya flushed furiously, her cheeks flaring.

Kenta piped up in response: "Wow Jaja, you look so cute! Thumbs up for sure! The absolute best!" Jaja lowered her eyes and blushed conspicuously. "Um...I don't need your compliments, but thanks anyway, Kenta... Over the top per usual..." she sighed. Maya looked over to Loi cautiously. "Uhm...Loi, how do I look?" Loi shut his eyes and drew a breath, becoming zen. "Well, you look great," he emerged with, coolly. Maya sprung back with a delighted expression. "Really? Thank you! I'm so glad you like it! Hehehehe... (Jaja was so right)..." she beamed. "...I didn't say that I liked it!" Loi stammered back. "See...I told you that I wasn't flat..." Maya whispered in Loi's ear with a hint of sultry tone at the end. A critical hit, Loi remembered when he used the jibe. "Y-you're right, I'm sorry I said that..."

**
Jaja dunked Kenta in the pool playfully. "Haha! This is so fun! Don't die, okay Kenta?" Frothing water and cursing came as a reply. Across the pool, Shunta threw his arms into the air. "Maya Onee-chan, let's swim! Weeeeeeee!" He bounced inside of his red and yellow polka dot swim ring with overflowing energy and zeal. "Hm?" Loi looked over to the pool's edge at Maya. "Wow, you all seem to be having so much fun..." Jaja waved at her from the otherside where a near lifeless Kenta floated in the water in front. "Maya, come here! I'll teach you how use your haunt in the swimming pool! I'm sure you want to learn!"

Maya paused. "Uhm, well...actually..." "Wait, don't tell me..." Loi jutted. Maya blushed and looked up. "I can't swim..." The group was speechless in response. "You're pathetic...what kind of ghost are you?" Loi yelled, a defeated look stuck on his face.
