Chapter 2
Dematt system.
On the system´s Edge, near the jump bridge on planet Dema.
-We are half a parsec from getting to the bridge and off to Deimara system we go. You think you can last till then? – I planned to say before she interrupted me.
-I can’t wait to arrive at the capital. - her words made my heartbeats rush to a quite frankly concerning rhythm.
I started to think. My head was moving way faster than what my body could react to. Noah’s birth was way easier.
-Son. – I told Noah without looking at him.
Noah looked to the floor, I don’t know if he was ignoring me, or if he was just in total shock. I touch his shoulder to make him react, but I didn’t get any answer.
-Alright. – I said just before sighing.
My Neverender side took control in an instant. I blinked and just a moment later, I was on my chair, holding my rudder. My son was in shock without anyone to aid him. My wife on a be don the verge of going into labor. None of them know this, but at that moment, on that precise instant, I couldn’t erase that stupid smile from my face.
Everything was going wrong, on the edge of getting worse, and only then was where I could do what I do best.
Achieving the impossible.
We were half a parsec away from the dock, but we were only five hundred clicks away from planet Dema. So, I did what any parent that tries to look like he knows what he’s doing would do. I drove backward.
We arrived quickly, I landed on the Med Bay’s dock. The landing was fast thanks to the ship belonging to a member of the royal family, two if we count my son.
Arana was taken to the Bay and some medic staff assisted Noah, he quickly got better after that.
Yo esperaba, sentado en la entrada de la bahía, esperando noticias de Arana. Viéndolo en retrospectiva, le fallé a Noah ese día, puesto que puse todo lo demás antes que a él por un momento.
I was waiting, sitting at the entrance of the Bay, waiting for some news about Arana. Looking back, I failed Noah that day, I put everything else before him for a moment.
-You are that guy, right? – I listened to a voice calling to me. I turned, I saw he was an old local.
-I’m sorry, to be Frank, I don’t understand your question. – I told him while standing up to chat with him.
- What, this thing ain’t working? – he asked while pointing to his palate.
-Your translator is fine. I just didn’t get what you meant with “that”. – I answered gently.
-That guy. The man from Earth. – he answered full of joy.
-Oh. Yeah, that’s me. -
He stood there, looking at me for a few seconds.
-You don’t remember me, do you? – he coldly asked.
I open my eyes shocked, I turned to him extremely embarrassed.
-No. I’m sorry, I don’t remember you. Maybe if you tell me your name… - I stopped for a moment to see if he would tell me.
He stood silent, he got a good look at me.
-Oh. Maybe I got you mixed up with the other guy. –
Another guy? So far away from Earth? In all these twelve years I’ve never seen another Earthling on a planet from the inner rim of the galaxy.
Before I could ask him, a woman came looking for the old man.
Her name was Erek’a. First daughter of the old man, one of six. She, contrary to his father, did recognize me.
-You are Neverender, right? – the emotion her words carried took a little smile from me.
-Dorian. – I said while raising my hand to greet her appropriately
She and her father sat by my side, they explained to me that their visit to the Bay was because of her brother, who lost an arm due to an accident last week. His name was Erek’d, the fourth brother.
-What brings you here? – Erek’a asked me.
-My wife, Arana. Is giving birth to our second son. -
-Heh. I still remember when Erek’a was born. It was raining, my wife, may Mara be with her, slipped on the way here. It is a miracle everything went down well that day. –
After that, the old man hugged her daughter. Seeing them together, my heart felt warm. I was ready to welcome the newest member of my family already. But, I couldn’t welcome him by myself.
I said goodbye to them, I walked towards inside my ship and took my cellphone. That earthly cellphone I had with me since the moment I left Earth.
I approached Noah’s room, with that cellphone in hand.
-Knock knock. – I said while knocking on the door.
I quickly entered and sat by his side.
-What is that? – he asked me intrigued by the cellphone.
-It’s an old device, from where I come. On Earth, it´s called a cellphone. It was made to communicate, like the transmitters we normally use but limited to Earth only. It had access to the local net, that was the function I used the most.
-Toc toc. – dije mientras tocaba su puerta.
After telling him that, I entered the music app where I found the only downloaded song.
The music started playing, after twelve years without hearing it, the song rocked me completely. The music on Earth, was truly unique.
-That’s the English from your world? – he asked me while flinching his eyes. I imagine he was having a hard time understanding the lyrics.
I nodded, then showed him the phone with the image of the song and its tittle.
-Everybody… - he started reading.
-Wants to rule the world. – I added, excited of sharing this song with him.
Noah started dancing, in his own way, at the rhythm of the music. While I waited for it to end, he marveled at the quantity of changing tones.
-I see you like the song. – I said while he nodded joyfully.
-To be honest, I showed it to you for a reason son. I needed to show you something. –
From my pocket, I took a little shoe, the first shoe Noah ever used in his life. While I explained him about the shoe, he looked at me paying attention.
-I need you to understand, today more than ever, our love for you will never be less than what we love you today. On the contrary, each day of your life, we, your mom and I, will love you even more than the day prior. – while I said that, I approached him, ready to lift him up.
-What’s my brother’s name going to be? – he asked, genuinely curious.
-I don’t know son, this time it’s your mother’s turn to choose. I had my turn last time. -
-Why am I named Noah? – he asked me confused.
-It’s an old story from Earth. It represents a new beginning. –
While we walked to the Bay, Noah asked me if I could play the song again. Obviously, with all the joy in my heart, I complied.
