Jay chewed her pizza slowly, eyeing the teens that sat on the couch across from her. Her suspicion rose with each interaction the teens had with one another.
Georgia was practically the same. Unfazed, uncaring, and with her famous resting witch face, but Theodora was a different story.
When she had called them down stairs, they both came down fairly quick. Georgia popped out first, and then followed Theo, a fumbling, red-faced mess. She looked like she belonged straight out of a comic book.
Jay couldn't control her expression when Georgia had asked Theo to pass the ranch, and when Theo had nearly dropped the bottle when their fingers grazed.
Jay had been parenting Georgia long enough to have developed a sense of motherly instincts. Something was up, and Jay wanted to know what.
"So..." Jay began. "Do you guys wanna watch a movie?"
She smiled when both of them agreed to watching something as long as they got to pick. Quickly, Jay hopped up and switched the lights off and handed the remote to Georgia.
She had an inkling of an idea of what was going on, but she needed to be sure. After all, she had never questioned Georgia sexuality, or even wondered for that matter, it was all unknown to her. Unknown... just like what most of Georgia was to her.
Georgia had picked an action movie after carefully avoiding the rom-coms and quickly got comfortable, resting her head on Theo's thighs.
Jay paused, watching closely. It wasn't unusual for Georgia to be touchy. She was very physical despite her lack of expression. There had been countless times when Annalise had come over and Georgia took Anna's thighs as a chair or head rest.
She furrowed her brows when Georgia took hold of Theo's hand and guided it to her chest, gently resting Theo's hand right beneath her collar bone. Jay sighed when Georgia had began to trace circles on Theo's hand.
They were definitely dating.
"Okay, stop flirting in front my pizza." Jay grumbled, slouching on the couch and pulling her knees up to her chest. She bit into her pizza as Theo began to panic.
"No, ma'am I would never-"
"You would never?" Georgia asked, raising one eyebrow. She smiled as Theo became a flustering mess.
"I'm gonna barf." Jay complained.
Theo smiled sadly. "I actually am recovering from a breakup, and I don't feel ready to commit to anything yet. So, yeah, no dating for me."
Suddenly, the room was silent, the only thing filling the awkwardness was a gun fight on the tv.
Georgia finished her pizza and dusted her hands clean. "More like you're scared you're gonna scare them away again." She craned her neck to look at Theo. "But I already told you I wouldn't mind, so just pick me."
"Just..." Theo began. "Just give me a little bit of time, okay?"
"Hey, if you don't mind me asking, Theodora..." Jay started. "How long did your previous relationship last?" Jay ignored Georgia's glare and waited for Theo's answer.
"Six years." Theo chuckled dryly. "We broke up barely a week ago. At a party. The same party I met Georgia at, actually."
Jay raised a brow and looked to her niece who had turned away, crossing her arms.
"You didn't tell me this...?" Jay muttered. "I even asked you how the party went, and you didn't say anything."
Georgia rolled her eyes. "I didn't think it was important." Her eyes flickered to Theo who had turned her attention back to the blazing war on the tv. "I didn't think she'd be so important."
Jay furrowed her brows as she watched Theo's attention drift from the screen to Georgia who was still staring at her. Jay's blue eyes widened as a sliver of the past slid into her mind. She grit her teeth, having believed that memory was long gone.
She sighed as she stood off the couch. "I'm going to sleep. Don't stay up too late." Jay rubbed her temple, groaning as she reached the kitchen. She poured her too big a glass of wine and stalked off to her room.
------
Jay relaxed into her mattress, having stripped to her night shorts and bra. Her mind absent, she repeatedly flicked the glass in her hand, ignoring how close the wine came to spilling out.
------
"Jaylen."
Jay's eyes shot open and immediately her features softened.
"Isaac." Jay muttered, closing her eyes comfortably as the older boy ran his thumb over her forehead.
Jay enjoyed the quiet whistle of leaves and the light slipping through the shade of her favorite tree. Their favorite tree.
"Mattie and I went for her check up the other day." Isaac spilt, ruining Jay's peace. "They said the baby, when time, is going to be delivered perfectly. They're guessing at another week or two."
"That's nice." Jay lied.
Matteo was nearly nine months pregnant with their child, the result of teens falling in love a little too fast. And being Matteo's younger sister, Jay was tied into being happy for her. Despite how badly she wished Mattie and Isaac never met.
Maybe if he had never met Mattie, maybe...
Maybe he would have picked Jay.
She laughed to herself. She was ten, with a little crush, and Isaac was seven months away from turning eighteen. It was little but a silly pipe dream.
Isaac chuckled. "Your eleventh birthday is coming up, isn't it? What are you planning to do?" He paused, looking the little girl in her blue eyes that always seemed to be fixated on him.
"I was hoping to hang out with you, actually." She smiled.
Isaac raised a brow. "What about the kids in your class? You don't wanna invite them to a party or something?" He smiled. "I'm sure a room filled with sixth graders would be so much fun."
Jay cut her eyes at him. "Don't be stupid." She growled, closing her eyes.
She breathed deep as she melted into the boy's touch. He was always gentle, never touching her in a way that would insinuate he felt the same. No quick grazes of skin, no eye contact that lasted a little too long.
She knew he saw her as a little sister. His girlfriend's little, brat sister.
"I just wish you would pick me." Jay whispered, painfully.
Silence made her heart ache more.
"You know I can't do that. I love Mattie. So, so much. And you're just her little sister. I could never see you like that." Isaac repeated what he had told her time and time again. "I'm sorry."
She caged her tears in as Mattie emerged from the house. Faster than she thought possible, Isaac left her, running to aid his heavily pregnant girlfriend.
He left her. He left her so fast, she hardly recognized her heart being shattered into thousands of pieces.
A part of her was relieved when Mattie and Isaac disappeared two days after Georgia was birthed. A part of her was grateful she would never have to see Isaac in love with Mattie. She would never have to look at him when all he saw was Mattie. She would never have to see them laughing together.
But whether or not she saw them together, they left a constant reminder of their love behind.
Now you may see why things are so strained between Georgia and Jay. I would be super uncomfortable if I had to raise the product of my sister and crush...
I have a joke for you, dear reader.
What do you get when two idiots who see each other as amusing, yet annoying toys use each other to benefit in their own ways, only to end up falling head over heels for one another?
An idiotic "enemies" to lovers story.
Funny joke, right?
Georgia wants to be less boring, Theodora just wants to graduate and disappear.
