I woke up to the sound of my alarm beeping. It had been beeping for the past few minutes but I didn’t move a muscle. I am still exhausted after spending most of the night writing case papers which all had deadlines coming up. It was 3am before I headed to bed exhausted but it came with my job as a detective, long hours are inevitable but I have always wanted to be a detective, I find criminal investigation fascinating. Studying the way criminal minds work and looking for clues to find criminals responsible for sometimes the most disturbing of crimes. I was also heavily influenced by my parents who work within the criminal investigation department too. My Dad is head detective and my mum works in forensics which is how they met when they were training. I already completed my detective programme 2 years ago and since I have been solving cases within a team assisting the more experienced qualified detectives. When I have done this long enough, I can look for managerial roles. I am unsure if I want to be a boss yet, my aim for now is to keep going and learning on the job. I am in no rush as I’m only 25. I have plenty of time plus I’m not exactly human so there’s no fear of me dropping dead any time soon.
I was born into a Vampire family but I don’t have all my Vampire abilities. Normally, they are all there from birth but not for me. Apart from the enhanced senses, the vampire speed and strength is nowhere to be seen. I smell like a Vampire and have the right senses so I definitely am one but I have no other abilities which is strange but my parents don’t care. They never have, they love me regardless and keep telling me it’s ok. One day they will appear, it is common for some Vampires not to get their abilities until they meet their other half. I haven’t met mine yet so it is still possible but I’m not too fussed about getting my abilities as I have my job to focus on but I wonder if I will ever get them. Although I did wish I had them when I was growing up. I wanted to be strong and have really quick movement like my family and would get upset when I tried to copy my cousins but couldn’t do what they could. As I got older, I learnt to accept that my other abilities weren’t coming and I stopped waiting for them to appear. If I meet my mate one day and my abilities appear then great, if not then it doesn’t matter. I can live without them as I’ve never had them, I can’t miss something I have never had.
I shook my head inside my mind as physically shaking my head would have made my sleep deprived head hurt which I didn’t need right then. I forced myself to get out of bed. It was 6am, I had to get to the station by 9. I don’t particularly like the early start to the day but it’s not up to me, early mornings are part of the deal. One day, I will be the head like Dad and can start the day whenever I please but until then I must abide by the rules. At least I no longer have to go through as much physical training as a detective, before when I was doing my police training, it was mostly physical to be able to be quick on my feet to catch criminals when I needed to, it was exhausting work every day. Detectives mainly solve crimes and have a ton of paperwork to do after but they have to know how to defend themselves because they will be coming into contact with criminals and at first won’t know it in most cases so have to know how to take care of themselves which I am fine with.
I got in the shower and thought about what the day would bring. I was excited to continue working on the current cases I had.
When I was finished in the shower, I got dressed smartly in a white shirt, knitted jumper, straight black trousers and black flats. I didn’t particularly like the police uniform from my police training which included a plain white shirt, black trousers and waist jacket with black lace up shoes. I’m glad to see the back of it as it could get really hot in it in the summer but I guess it was good to keep warm in the winter.
I applied moisturiser to my face and then light makeup of primer and a little amount of concealer for a light coverage, setting powder and some waterproof mascara to help my green eyes pop a bit as they looked dull from the lack of sleep.
I didn’t bother with any other eye makeup as it would likely smudge throughout the day and would need sorting which I couldn’t do while at work unless I was on my break. I tied my medium length blonde hair into a secure bun.
I made my way downstairs to place it on the coat rack by the front door before making myself breakfast. Today it was French toast and tea which I instantly tucked into once it was ready.
After breakfast, I cleared up before I grabbed my purse, keys and phone. I left the house on time and began the car journey to the station.
As soon as I made it in to the station, I found out there was a briefing for a new case. I groaned. Like I didn’t already have enough cases to work on, now another would be added to my plate. All these cases keep me so busy with endless late nights which I don’t mind but it would be nice to have an early night once in a while. At the station it’s mostly team work but there’s written work that everyone has to do and there is always a ton of it. Maybe I should have a think about reducing my hours then my work load would reduce and I’d have more time for myself which I am barely getting. I though university was bad but that was nothing compared to this. Despite being a Vampire, I need to sleep just like the humans do otherwise I’m low on energy and crave blood even more which I can’t risk with coexisting with humans. Yeah I still need blood even though I don’t have all my vampire abilities. Without it, I would probably die.
I shook my head as I made my way to the briefing room and took a seat with a note pad and pen. I need to focus on this briefing, I can’t keep asking for something to be repeated.
“Morning Everleigh,” my best friend Susie greeted me with tired grey eyes after taking the seat beside me. Looks like I’m not the only one who had a late night but I know Susie's reasoning is different to mine, she’s engaged and wants to spend all her time with her fiancé Scott which is fine, I am really excited for the wedding and happy for her. Scott is a great guy, he really cares for her. Susie isn’t like me, she always gets all her work done before she leaves every day. I really need to do the same because I really don’t want to talk to my boss about reducing my hours because then I’d probably be given the easy cases but I like to have a challenge or it would be boring. Today Susan’s short black hair was pulled back with a hair band. She was wearing a navy blouse with black trousers and low wedged shoes.
“Morning Susie, late night with Scott again was it?” I nudged her arm playfully and Susie blushed. I knew I was right she-
“Uh hum,” a familiar throat was cleared and I realised the room was now full of people. Everyone’s eyes were to the front waiting for the chief to speak but the chief seemed to be staring at me in amusement but it was only for a second before his face turned serious to address the whole room. He must have heard my conversation with Susie with his vampire senses but I let that slide for now because there was nothing I could do about with being in a room full of people and he was my Dad after all.
“Brace yourselves folks, this is a grim one,” Dad warned everyone before starting the briefing of the new case and by the end of it, everyone was horrified and couldn’t get out of there quick enough once we were all dismissed. I wanted to do the same but I heard Dad call my name and knew it would have to wait.
