I grabbed Chance from under his arms and pulled him up a little before carefully dragging his body onto the couch. None of the movement stirred him from his unconscious state. I didn’t know what to do. I could sense he was a Vampire so couldn’t take him to a hospital. I have to wait until he wakes up but I could try to help his wound. The blood is dry which means he is healing already but it wouldn’t hurt to clean the wound.
I got to take a closer look at Chance as I deliberated whether I should take a look at his wound or not and my was he even more good looking up close. It felt wrong watching him but I couldn’t help myself. He was perfect.
I shook my head of the thoughts that were beginning to enter my mind about him and went closer to lift up his shirt before I changed my mind but as soon as I touched his shirt, my breath was taken away as Chance opened his blue eyes and sat up. He grabbed my wrist and asked
“What are you doing?”
“I just wanted to check your wound, you were unconscious,” I explained myself. His hand on my wrist was giving me tingles and I was trying my best not to think about it.
“There’s no need, my wound is already healing,” Chance let go of my wrist and I moved away to sit on the other couch beside the one he was sitting on. It was so surreal, it was like there was royalty in the room and I wasn’t allowed to stare but he was so handsome that I couldn’t will my eyes to leave him.
“How did it happen?” I asked to get the attention off me. I’m sure he could see the way I was ogling him but he didn’t comment on it.
“Well I was in my home town up north. I was returning home from work when I realised I was being stalked by a couple of hooded men. I could see they had weapons and tried to lose them but there were too many, they cornered me and one of them stabbed me. I managed to distract them and got away but I didn’t go home. I immediately left town and found myself here but I saw them follow me here,”
“Why didn’t you go home?”
“Because the town has been under attack recently, people are being murdered left right and centre. About a month ago, I came home one day to find my parents dead. The men after me are probably responsible and I knew if I stayed, I would suffer the same fate since they’d picked me so I ran,”
“I’m so sorry for your loss,” I apologised genuinely. “You can stay here until you get back on your feet,”
I decided. I couldn’t let him go. It wasn’t about him being handsome. He didn’t have anywhere to go or any money as he’d left his home with nothing. He can stay here until he gets himself sorted. He can be my eye candy until I get myself sorted with a new job to and keep me company.
“Thank you Everleigh,” he said my name for the first time, it gave me chills and not the bad kind. I tried to ignore them to say
“You’re welcome,” but it was no use they wouldn’t go away. Something has changed in me and it's all down to the handsome stranger I have just agreed to let stay in my home.
I don’t know how this happened. I don’t normally let strangers come into my home, injured or not but it felt like the right thing to do. I didn’t feel threatened or like I was in any danger, my Vampire senses would be on alert if something was up but they aren’t. They have never let me down before, if they think I’m safe then I trust them completely. Chance had already healed fully, I’d given him some of my Dad’s clean clothes from when he stayed over with Mum a while back. It was nothing special, just a shirt and jeans but it looked good on him, it showed off his thin muscular build which I didn’t get a chance to see before as I couldn't stop looking at his face. I’d done my best to get the blood out of his clothes, a white shirt, black jeans, they were currently in the wash, when they’re dried they will look good on him.
Chance was currently in the guest room making himself at home. I couldn’t help thinking of what he could be doing in there. All I knew was it was nothing to do with me and I couldn’t wait to see him again. It was like a spell had been cast over me and Chance was now the centre of my attention and I doubt he had a clue about it.
I was so busy thinking of Chance that I didn’t hear the door bell ringing. I groaned. I really didn’t want to be disturbed. I had a handsome guest who I wanted to keep all to myself for now and it is what’s best for Chance. He was attacked after all. He believes his attackers followed him and are still after him to finish the job. What he told me about people being murdered in his town is disturbing and if I hadn’t have resigned from my detective job, I would be interested in trying to find the killers but I am no longer a detective. It will remain a mystery until the case is solved without me. There must already be people on the case. I can relax and let the professionals do their jobs. It’s nothing to do with Queen city any way but I suppose now it could be if Chance’s attackers are after him. It won’t be long before a someone at the station finds out about it.
I answered the door and was surprised to see it was Dad. Now I am worried, it must be important because he never comes over without telling me first.
“Dad what are you doing here? What’s going on?” I asked anxiously and I saw there were two police officers with him. It must be serious, something terrible has happened, I know it. I can feel it.
“I’m here to tell you I’ve assigned police officers for your house,” Dad confused me. What the hell is going on? Why do I need police protection?
“Why? What’s going on?” I demanded as Dad stepped in and I closed the door behind him.
“Well this is top secret for now so this stays between us,”
“Ok,” I agreed and repeated my question since Dad didn’t answer it yet. “What’s going on?”
“Well...... A young Vampire couple turned up at the station today seeking refuge because their town has a serial killer on the loose. They were injured and are being taken care of now, they nearly didn’t make it out there alive,”
“Oh my,” I replied. That is awful and sounds an awful lot like what Chance told me. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the same town.
“And what with the serial killer on the loose here, you’ll be protected as I’m not taking any chances not after this,”
“Dad,” I moaned. I don’t like this. It means the officers outside will be watching my every move when I leave the house to make sure I’m safe. Dad has always been over protective over me.
“I know you don’t like it but it’s for your own protection,”
“For how long?”
“Until it’s safe,”
I groaned again. It could be ages before it is safe. It will only be safe when the serial killer/s for both cases have been found and are in prison.
I silently agreed to the police protection. Even if I disagreed, I didn’t have a choice in the matter. The police officers will be here until Dad says otherwise.
I didn’t realise Dad had started sniffing the air and looking around suspiciously. What is he doing? I sniffed the air and couldn’t smell anything different.
“Are you ok Dad?” I asked.
“I’m fine,” Dad replied but his nose didn’t stop twitching. “What’s that smell?”
“What smell?”
“I can smell something,” Dad scratched his head. “It smells like blood, vampire blood. It’s very faint but I can still smell it. Did something happen here? Are you hurt?”
Crap! It must be Chance’s blood that he’s smelling but I cleaned it up and all the bloody clothes went in the wash. Chance’s wound is fully healed so how can Dad smell it? It must be because he has his full vampire abilities which makes his senses much stronger unlike mine.
Dad looked worried and looked me over for any cuts but found nothing and sighed in relief.
“I can’t smell anything Dad, there was no blood here,”
“Is someone else here Everleigh?”
“Of course not, it’s just us here,” I decided not to reveal Chance to Dad because he wouldn't be happy with me for letting a stranger into my home. Chance could probably hear us and if he was wise, he would not do anything to alert Dad of his presence but it was too late, dad was already heading upstairs straight towards the guest room where Chance was.
