“A young Vampire couple turned up at the station today seeking refuge because their town has a serial killer on the loose. They were injured and are being taken care of now, they nearly didn’t make it out there alive,” I heard as I tuned back into Everleigh’s conversation with her Dad. That sounds similar to what happened to me. My town is under attack too. Whatever happened, it’s good they managed to get away and are safe now.
“Oh my,” Everleigh replied.
“And what with the serial killer on the loose here, you’ll be protected as I’m not taking any chances not after this,”
What? They have a serial killer here too? Maybe this wasn’t the best place for me to seek safety but Everleigh’s Dad probably has people watching the house.
“Dad,” Everleigh moaned.
“I know you don’t like it but it’s for your own protection,”
“For how long?”
“Until it’s safe,”
Everleigh groaned again. I can see how she is annoyed with being guarded but it will keep us both safe. My attackers aren’t likely to break into a house that is guarded.
“Are you ok Dad?” Everleigh asked as I sighed in relief. I was protected here and had nothing to worry about.
“I’m fine,” Everleigh’s Dad replied. “What’s that smell?”
“What smell?”
“I can smell something. It smells like blood, vampire blood. It’s very faint but I can still smell it. Did something happen here? Are you hurt?”
Shit! It must be my blood he is talking about but there is no sign of any blood anymore, I have fully healed and I’m sure Everleigh cleared everything up.
“I can’t smell anything Dad, there was no blood here,” Everleigh lied. She must be worried about my safety too. If her Dad finds out then I could be in danger and that will put them both in danger too.
“Is someone else here Everleigh?”
“Of course not, it’s just us here,” Everleigh is sticking to her lie but I don’t think her Dad believes her as I can already here footsteps heading my way.
The door burst open and in walked a male version of Everleigh. I’m guessing this is her Dad. Everleigh had followed him but she was too late, her Dad already had grabbed me by the neck. I didn’t fight back but I did try to get out of his hold but I didn’t use much energy. I may have healed but I don’t want to wear myself out by fighting with anyone I don’t need to be fighting with.
“Dad what are you doing?” Everleigh demanded. I could see her struggling inside. She wanted to help me but she couldn’t attack her own father so she was holding herself back. “Let him go, he’s harmless,”
“Who the hell is he?” Everleigh’s Dad demanded and refused to let go of me but I remained calm, it wasn’t as if his grip was hurting me.
“If you let him go then we can explain. Chance isn’t a threat dad, let him go please,” Everleigh urged her Dad. “Please,”
Her Dad eventually sighed and reluctantly let go of me. He stepped away and Everleigh moved to stand in front of me to most likely protect me from her Dad.
“So what is going on here Everleigh? Who is he?”
“It’s not what you think Dad. Chance-” Everleigh began to explain but she stopped in her tracks when I placed my hands on her shoulders from behind. As soon as I did, I knew. I felt a warm feeling and felt complete. Everleigh is my mate.
“It’s ok Everleigh,” I said in Everleigh’s ear. “Why don’t you ask the police officers outside if they’d like refreshments while I explain everything to your Dad,”
I didn't know if there were police officers outside, I just assumed. Who else would be guarding the house?
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” I confirmed. This will give me a chance to talk to her Dad in private and find out more about my mate.
“Ok” Everleigh finally agreed before leaving the room while I wondered why she hadn’t recognised me as her mate yet. Perhaps her Dad could explain.
I looked over to him to see he was looking at me wearily. I don’t blame him, he just found a stranger in his daughter’s home, I would be the same if I was a father and had a daughter.
“Look Mr.....” I started to say calmly and my voice trailed off as I didn’t know his name. I don't know much about Everleigh either but she let me stay here. It wouldn’t happen in normal circumstances. We’re Vampires, Everleigh must have sensed it was ok for me to stay here, that I wasn’t a threat to her but something seems off about her, I just can’t figure out what. I haven’t had the chance with everything that has happened.
“Mr Ackhurst,” Mr Ackhurst finished my sentence.
“I know this looks bad but it isn’t what you think. I assure you there’s no need to worry. I overheard you telling Everleigh about a couple who were attacked in their town. The same thing happened to me except my attackers followed me here. I had to lose them and I ended up knocking on Everleigh’s door for help. She’s not in any danger, I promise. I didn’t know what else to do,”
Mr Ackhurst took a moment to take in what I had said before saying “I figured as much once Everleigh stepped in to defend you but that isn’t what worries me, there are officers outside so we’re safe here. I’m Chief Detective and can take a statement from you here which will help in catching whoever is responsible,” That explains everything. “What worries me is an even bigger issue,”
“I don’t understand,” I replied in confusion. Our safety is the main concern right now, my attackers could still be out here looking for me and there is already a serial killer in this town. What could be a bigger issue then that?
“I’m sure you know what is happening between you and my daughter. You’re her mate aren’t you?” My Ackhurst surprised me with a knowing look. How the hell does he know Everleigh is my mate and is so confident in the fact?
“She is but how did you guess?”
“Any fool could see and I am a detective remember?”
Why is he so calm? Shouldn’t he be angry or warn me off his daughter or something like most Dad’s probably would?
“You need to talk to her, she clearly has no idea,”
“I know but then what?” I asked more to myself. I know Everleigh is my mate but she doesn’t seem to have any idea about any of this. It’s obvious she is attracted to me but being my mate? I don't think it has crossed her mind. Something really is off but I can’t find out what that is until I’ve spent more time with her, just the two of us. All these interruptions aren’t helping. Her Dad’s just turned up, I have to wait until he’s gone to get alone time with Everleigh. If he ever leaves. Who knows, he may live here. I don’t know much about either of them, just that they’re vampires like me and Mr Ackhurst is the head detective of this town.
“You will figure it out,” Mr Ackhurst answered my question. “Mates always do,”
Mr Ackhurst’s words did nothing to relieve my worry. It’s amazing that Everleigh is my mate but how will we become proper mates if she has no idea what is happening between us?
I shook my head. I need to talk to her first. Anything else, I can worry about later. There’s no point being anxious about something that hasn’t happened yet. It will only make things worse. I can’t exactly do anything about it now as her Dad is here. I need to relax but I can’t. I want to get close to Everleigh, when I touched her shoulders earlier, it was the best feeling I’ve ever experienced. I need more of that, I want more.
“I guess but why are you so relaxed about all of this?” I questioned curiously. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s making things easier but-”
“Why would I be worried? I don’t sense anything bad about you so Everleigh isn’t in any danger and you’re both adults. I won’t stop you from being together, you were fated to be together and I have no right to stop that from happening,”
“I appreciate that, thank you but is your daughter ok?” I asked worriedly.
“How do you mean?” Mr Ackhurst began to look concerned.
“I don’t know, something doesn’t feel right. Her senses seem off, I haven’t been around her long enough to find out what the problem is and my mind has been occupied with everything that’s happened,”
“That’s understandable but it’s nothing to worry about,” Mr Ackhurst assured me as his look of concern disappeared. “You will find out soon enough,”
