~EPISODE OF NEW HISTORY 04~
★Adventure. Those who partake of it whether willingly or by necessity are not always viewed in the best light and carry many names. Traveler. Vagabond. Drifter. Globetrotter. Dreamer. Thrill Seeker. Ne’er-do-well. Adventurer. However, when the power of the Rings are felt and the face of the world is shifted by their power, those who chase adventure become beloved. And there are none more so than Sonic the Hedgehog. The Most Famous Hedgehog in the World. It is a title earned for his exploits as well as his heroics against the nefarious Doctor Eggman. And now, with his last battle barely passed, he moves to meet his nemesis once again.

Sunlight sparkling off ocean surface
Birds soaring high
Sleek red fuselage
Whirring airscrew at the front
Vapor trail behind
Twin silver wings stacked at bottom and above
Gold buckle and white strap on red boot
Rhythmic tapping upon the upper wing
“You seem to be in a good mood,” Tails commented as he leaned back in the cockpit and looked up at Sonic standing upon the top wing of the biplane with his hands behind his head. “I had kind of thought that this morning had soured your mood.”
“Nothing a fresh adventure won’t fix,” Sonic laughed with a smirk. “Though I feel like it’s been ages since I stood on the wing of the Tornado like this.”
“I could have sworn you only did it just a week ago,” Tails remarked as he thought back to getting behind the controls of the aircraft for the first time. “I’m honestly surprised that you let me fly it at all.”
“Might as well have,” Sonic shrugged. “You would have just flown up on your tails after Eggman and me anyway. Besides, I’m glad you did. That airship of Eggman’s would have shredded it without your piloting skills.”
“I still got shot down,” Tails laughed with disappointment at himself.
“Only to take the opportunity to slap a rocket on it and catch me twice chasing after Eggman. And that second time…”
Sonic trailed off as he thought again about the Darkness he witnessed and how his transformation and the Chaos Emeralds were stripped away from him. Something was up and the only way to figure it out was to chase after it. Yet possessing memories of the events he was living again set him up with false expectations. Expectations that were soon shattered.
“Hey, is that…?”
The question left Tails’ lips as he spotted sunlight glistening off of something in the distance. Sonic wasn’t sure what it was and did not provide an answer as he held a hand up to his brow and looked out to focus.
“It’s not Angel Island.”
“Angel what?”
“Never mind Tails, just take us in low. If that’s the Death Egg, then Eggman is going to have defenses up and I’m not in the mood to learn how to swim in the middle of the ocean.”
“Right,” Tails agreed and masterfully piloted the Tornado down to the surface of the ocean, letting a wing tip skim the surface spraying water up beside the plane.
As Sonic and Tails grew closer to the glinting light in the distance it started to become obvious that what the sunlight was glinting off of was something rather large.
“It really is the Death Egg!” Tails gasped in amazement as the size of the distant object became not just an island, but something far larger that had mostly sunk beneath the surface of the ocean. “I can’t believe it’s actually still intact after all of those explosions and atmospheric reentry! And how much damage did it receive when it crashed into the ocean to cause a tidal wave like that!”
“Not enough,” Sonic dryly replied with a frown. Watching the sky as he continued Tails understood even before Sonic finished his thought. “He’s still able to make more than enough of his mechs.”
Soaring over the waves higher than the Tornado, robot aircraft that resembled, birds flew about in three to five craft formations. They were tremendously smaller than the Tornado, but that meant greater agility as one wing caught sight of the biplane with their rather large round eyes. Nodding to each other with a playful affirmation possible only by the AI programming granted to them by Doctor Eggman, the robots swooped down to intercept the approaching craft.
“Here comes trouble!” Sonic smirked as Tails gave the control stick of the Tornado a hard jerk
Lurching from the sudden shift of the controls, the Tornado again dipped a wing into the water and should have been pulled under the waves by the impact. Tails however pulled off an impossible maneuver and with a flick of a switch ignited the rocket strapped to the belly of the biplane and blasted straight through the formation of the coming robots.
“That was amazing!” Sonic yelled excited by the speed as he turned to look back at their interceptors turned pursuers.
“Hehe!” Tails laughed taking pride in his accomplishment. “I told you I was doing some work, but I’m glad I decided to stick with a more powerful single rocket rather than switching out for a more agile but slower twin set of smaller rockets.”
“I don’t know,” Sonic smirked with gritted teeth as he watched the angry looking mechs chasing after them. “I’m not one to go slower, but I definitely think a little more maneuverability wouldn’t hurt.”
“Right! Hang on tight!”
Not missing Sonic’s instruction, Tails gripped the control stick and performed a barrel roll taking the Tornado rapidly to a higher elevation. Impressive as the maneuver was, the biplane was primitive in aeronautic design compared to Eggman’s robots and they were easily flanked by them.
“Guess it’s time I have a little fun.”
With Tails piloting, Sonic met the first wing of robots and performed amazing feats of aerial ability. Curling into a ball to attack and leaping from enemy to enemy, Sonic took breaks by finding his footing again and again on the top wing of the Tornado. It was a combination Sonic and Tails had used in the adventure that resulted in the Death Egg currently resting in the ocean and it served them well again. The ease of which they reached the Death Egg however was unsettling and Sonic had to take a double take as Tails piloted their approach.
“Is that really the Death Egg?”
“It has to be, right?”
The surprise of the two adventures was obvious and fully understandable. But one week prior the small moon-sized space station had been entering orbit and putting Eggman into an unchallengeable position to conquer the world. Now, now the great space station bobbed in the ocean like an apple and was covered in plant life and coral as though it had been hundreds of years hence.
Though the skies above the fallen space station were swarming with Eggman’s robots, something else held their attention. It was a fortuitous turn for Sonic and Tails as they were awestruck to the point of defenselessness as they made their approach into the space station’s exposed interiors. Inside the belly of the great beast, they would prepare to face a new mystery even as they attempted to solve another. It would seem the adventures Sonic once knew truly were nothing more than a dream now. Straightforward as he was, it was likely there was still conflict in his heart.★
