The Sorcerer's Confidant

Chapter 3: Erith?

Chapter 3: Erith?

Mar 27, 2022

Ozahr prepared to depart for Erith the very next morning after Elidyr told him he'd be their new Spell Knight. It wasn't traditional to relocate Spell Knights from town to town, especially not so abruptly, but... Ozahr figured he shouldn't question the change of scenery now that he finally got it.

He dressed in his favorite robes—dark blue as the night sky with golden designs decorating the soft fabric. Over his shoulders, Ozahr draped a capelet that matched his robes, and on the chains around his waist he clipped a couple potions and a decorative tassel wrapped around a metallic frame resembling a flower. But how could anyone identify him as a sorcerer without a pointy hat?

Ozahr spun his hat in the air before it landed on his head, grabbed his large suitcase, and headed out for the carriage outside. By the time he made it down the spiraling steps of the entire castle, he was dragging the suitcase behind him, shifting the red carpets around and giving the maids more work than they already had. Ozahr quickly apologized to the one who managed to catch him in the act before dashing out the grand doors and looking around for a royal carriage as he went down the steps.

"Hmm, where could it be parked..." He spotted a decent-looking carriage approaching the palace. "Aha! It's smaller than I thought, but it'll do—"

The carriage turned left, driving away from the palace.

"Ah—" Ozahr put down his heavy suitcase. "Alright, not that one, how about—"

"There is no carriage," a voice called from the top of the palace stairs. It was Elidyr, gracefully gliding down the steps and watching his spoiled student stumble about with his belongings.

"What do you mean, no carriage?"

"I mean you'll have to go by foot," said Elidyr. "You wanted to see more of the world, didn't you?"

Ozahr dramatically put down the suitcase, looked back at Elidyr and huffed. "A respectable sorcerer is not about to walk by foot through endless forests and mud." He dusted off his hands and faced the street.

Elidyr subtly shook his head.

Faint blue sparks began to slowly gather into the sorcerer's open palms, swirling faster and faster until their blue light overwhelmed his silhouette and got absorbed into his arms. Ozahr breathed slowly in concentration as to not let all the magical energy escape before it was time.

He pulled his arms together and pointed them at the ground. The untamed magic shot into the earth with a violent whirl, kicking up dirt and grass all around. Ozahr kept his feet steady as the blue stream of light kept bursting out of his hands. It took a lot of effort to keep untamed magic under control, so when Ozahr finally separated his arms, one of them forcefully flew to the side, ripping a crooked, pearlescent hole in the fabric of space.

Ozahr chuckled in slight defeat. "Guess I'm a little rusty with portals—" He rubbed the back of his neck. After picking up his suitcase and waving his goodbye to Elidyr, Ozahr stepped through the crooked hole as best he could and entered the inter-dimensional space known as his personal portal. Every sorcerer had one unique to their own powers, personality, and memories. It was by no means a beginner's trick—opening a portal took a lot of stamina out of a sorcerer. If they were to overuse their magic right after opening a portal, they might even lose their powers for a few days.

Ozahr, however, wasn't worried about it at all. After all, it was just a short walking trip from one portal end to another before he reached his destination. As soon as he stepped inside, warm air and gentle sunshine hit his skin. The gentle breeze swept the hair across his forehead back and revealed a lush field of soft grass and a row of trees that almost formed a wall with an archway. The shape of the trees repeated itself countless times and the clouds in the sky didn't stir one bit despite the breeze.

"It's always so relaxing here..." Ozahr murmured with a smile as he took in the fresh air and listened to the rustling leaves and grass. "Time for a new adventure!"

He strolled along the lightly colored dirt path leading to the exit portal shimmering with rainbow colors in the sun. When Ozahr took a step through, he found himself in a land of shadow. He blinked several times, trying to get his eyes to adjust to the low light, but what he saw did not resemble the bustling and colorful city of Erith. The ground was ashy, the shabby looking homes scattered haphazardly were colorless, and the storm clouds hanging overhead rumbled subtly.

"This isn't Erith..." Ozahr looked around at the people walking with their heads down.

Ozahr Caldun, the self proclaimed strongest sorcerer at the ripe age of 22, thinks he can finally convince his teacher, Elidyr, that he's ready to face the real world. Elidyr, in a moment of weakness, reluctantly agrees. Ozahr doesn't make it one portal outside his small kingdom before getting himself almost killed and signing himself up for an adventure longer than he asked for.

Sorcerer's Confidant is a character driven story in a simple world of magic that likes to explore unusual friendships and exciting adventure.
