From You to Me

Chapter 2: Meet the tutee

Chapter 2: Meet the tutee

Mar 28, 2022

Northwest from the Plaza is Burton Village where Jose, my tutee lives. Burton Village is only several minutes away from here so villagers there tend to visit the Plaza often to take a fresh air and stroll with their family and other reasons. It's been some time since I started tutoring Jose and I noticed immediately that he is not unteachable. According to him, his previous tutors tend to read the texts, instead of explaining it to him properly.

"Burton Albi"

(Burton Village)

It's what it says in the sign. Every day after school, I would go to Jose's house to start the tutor. Each day I would teach him new lessons and help him with the lessons he's having troubled with in school and after that, I would give him activities and homework to see if he really learned something and I would check it the next day. What I planned today is to help him improve his reading skills.

"Nathan!!"

"Hello Jose, how are you?"

"I'm good! Let's go inside, Nathan!"

"Sure!"

Burton's houses are two-storey buildings and this home is not different. First floor is consist of the kitchen, the dining room, comfort room and the grandparents' room. Second floor is where Jose's room is and I'm teaching him there for the past few months. There would be times where would take him outside to teach. I'll often associate the lesson with the things around us and things he already knew. Based from experience, I find it easy to learn something when I associate it with the things I already knew, making the learning process faster.

"Good afternoon, Madam."

"Nathan, you're here. Thank you as always for taking the time to go here and teach my son. Whenever he would learn something new, he would immediately go and show it to me."

"Hahaha, I'm glad to hear that Madam. It seems like he really enjoys learning new things."

Kids have very creative and curious minds. While they are still curious about everything, we should help them learn all they want to know because once they are older, bits by bits they will become less curious about these things and try focus more to find the meaning of life for them.

"Nathan, Nathan. Please check my homework, hurry up!"

"Okay, okay. Sorry Ma'am please excuse me."

"Sure Nathan, see you later."

Yesterday's lesson is about addition and subtraction of 5 digit numbers. For children around Jose's age, they tend to get confused when the numbers become bigger and bigger. I checked his paper and he looks at me very excitedly.

"......Jose"

"*Gulp* is there something wrong?"

"...... You got all answers correct."

"Yey!!!"

Hearing the news, he started jumping out of joy. Though I'm worried that it might cause some disturbance downstairs.
