Amaranta couldn't deny her own nervousness. She had gone to find a place with this, paying her first full month of rent. Somehow begging her mother that she had a client. And then more would come.
Of course, they had their own doubts. It wasn't like they were back in Italy, with, friends and relatives to help them out. They were alone here, even if her father was a diplomat.
But after nearly a day, and having some promising potential, they relented and given it.
She had asked for somewhere decent in Lower East Side, since it was cheaper.
It was old, but part of a bustling neighborhood. And with a streetcar nearby. That and it was probably best if she learned how to drive.
She opened the door, looking at the almost complete costume hidden inside the closet, not exposed to the elements. She just needed Sam to try it out, make a few adjustments with sizing if necessary. And it was a job completed.
Now, she had to wait.
Sam burst in through the doors, this time wearing a lime green suit and a garish purple tie. Waltzing up to her, he flashed her a charismatic grin.
“Hey, how are you, Amaranta? How’s everything been?”
"You'll see it soon enough,” Amaranta said, preferring to let her works show her skill.
“Great! So should I sit down and wait for you to bring it out?” Sam motioned to a chair nearby.
"Take a seat." Amaranta had quickly cleaned, and did a basic setup; it was still sorely lacking in many details but Sam didn't seem to care.
Amaranta went to the closet, taking out the finished costume, the only one hanging inside the closet, then, going back to Sam.
She showed Sam the finished costume, hiding her shaking hands. "What do you think about it?"
Sam’s eyes widened and he waved his arms around in excitement. Jumping up, he exclaimed loudly, “Wow, it’s just as I imagined!!! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try this on! Well, may I try it on here?”
Amaranta blushed a little from the praise, then nodded. "Thank you, I'm glad I could live up to your expectations. Sure, I'd like to see you wear it, and tell me if something doesn't fit."
She could still make alterations, however, judging by Sam putting the costume directly over his body, it should fit.
Sam tugged at the costume until it went over his clothes. “Golly…this is great!” he crooned, strutting around, admiring himself in the mirror. “Wait until everyone sees THIS! I’m definitely going to take the world by storm!”
Amaranta went to take a look, seeing whether it brought out the best in Sam, by her own measurements. She kept her silence until she was satisfied.
"You're too kind, and definitely, you'll be the centre of attention, and you're really confident; many would admire you," Amaranta replied. The colors did come together in the costume in the best way possible, she did respect him for the audacity he had to wear something like this.
So many actors were sometimes embarrassed and uncomfortable, even though that had been their only job: to catch others' attention and look good.
Sam laughed and patted Amaranta on the shoulder. “Thanks so much! I’m going to wear this outside now and give my friends a good laugh.” Lowering his voice, he continued, “Especially Joel. He’s going to throw a fit after seeing these colors.”
So he was self-aware, though Amaranta didn't judge what one wore as long as they were happy. But if she was honest, the first day when she bought the cloth and started work, she could not hold back herself from laughing at how ridiculous it looked.
To herself, not to anyone else, just so she could do it without bursting into laughter and get it all wrong.
She grinned. "How about I laugh a little before you go to see your friends? It was a lot of fun, but there is no way I can take that seriously."
Sam laughed like a hyena in response. “Hehehehe! Well, I can’t take myself seriously either, but maybe that’s the point! Being so serious all the time is tiring, dontcha think?” He stuck his tongue out playfully.
She was still in between laughs a little before managing to compose herself. Days she spent a good time laughing, before buckling down to work.
"Exactly, sometimes it isn't necessary at all to be serious. But making costumes for these stuff seriously, it proves a much more daunting task," She was ready to see him off. "So, if you have any friends looking for a costume, or even just mending clothes, you can give them my number."
Sam shook her hand enthusiastically. “Great idea. I will! I think I have an idea for a more serious costume as well. But it’s still in the works. I can’t wait to see you take on a more serious project as well!”
With that, he headed off.
