It was Friday the day of the homecoming game and the homecoming dance. The dance wasn’t going to be anything special, just some crummy DJ that plays The Cupid Shuffle every other song. The only thing special about this dance was that I was going to homecoming with Trevor. It might seem ridiculous but I could barely sleep last night. I drove to Trevors to pick him up for school and when he came out he was wearing my jersey. I was so happy. I know I asked him to wear it to the game but I didn’t think he would wear it to school. Trevor opened my pickup door and climbed into the passenger seat.
“What are you staring at,” He asked.
“Oh, nothing. I’m just surprised that you are wearing my jersey,” I said.
“Well, you said you wanted me to wear it so I’m wearing it,” He said.
“I just think that red is your color,” I said. Trevor’s blushed his face turning as red as the jersey.
“Thanks,” He mumbled, trying to turn away so I wouldn’t see how embarrassed he was.
“Are you going to be okay with everyone looking at you,” I asked.
“It's fine I figured if I’m going to get bullied for people thinking I’m gay then I figured I should stop hiding it. I shouldn’t be scared of them anymore,”
“You are so brave. Just know if someone is bothering you then you come and get me and I will kick their ass,” I said flexing my muscles to show off to him.
“Huh, I guess having a football player as a boyfriend has some advantages to it,” He said rubbing his hand on my muscular arm.
My face turned bright red. I didn’t expect him to do that but I was glad he did.
“What's that supposed to mean,” I asked
“Oh nothing,” He said, giving me a playful grin.
“Yeah sure,” I smirked.
We got to school and we walked in together. We then headed to our class. It was going pretty good. Until towards the end of the school day I saw something I didn’t want to see. I walked into the bathroom and saw Darren messing with Trevor
“What the hell do you think you are wearing?'' Darren said. His voice was full of anger.
“What are you talking about,” Trevor said.
“I'm talking about that jersey. Just because Felix lent it to you doesn't mean you can wear it like it's yours,” Darren snapped
“Just leave me alone,” Trevor said.
“Yeah I will leave you alone after you take off that jersey,” Darren said.
“I don't have to do shit so get out of my way,” Trevor said, trying to push his way through them. Darren then pushed Trevor onto the floor.
“Listen I don’t like seeing someone like you wear that jersey. So take it off,” Darren snapped as he was getting angrier.
“No, leave me alone,” He said.
Darren then punched him in the face. I rushed over to Trevor.
“Trevor, are you okay,” I said, holding him in my arms.
“Yeah I'm fine,” He said
“What the hell is your problem Darren,” I snapped.
“My problem is this fag wearing of teams jersey. Doesn’t it bug you,” Darren asked.
“No, why would it bug me? I am the one who told him to wear the jersey,” I said.
“Why are you so friendly to someone like him? He is just some fag,” Darren said. I finally snapped and punched Darren in the face. “ What the hell Felix,”
“You need to shut the f*ck up. I am sick of how you are treating my boyfriend,” I said. I was just upset. I didn't realize what I was saying until I said it.
“Wait he is your what,” Darren said. He was shocked and so was I. I didn’t mean to say it but the words just slipped out in my frustration.
“That's right Trevor is my boyfriend so back off,” I said regaining my composure.
“Felix come on you can’t be serious. He has to have something on you. You can’t be a homo like him,” Darren said.
“Darren, you are my best friend, but you can't keep treating Trevor like this,” I said.
“This is all your fault you did this to him,” Darren said his voice was full of hate and anger. I’m sure that if I wasn’t here he would have really hurt Trevor. He got up and in front of Trevor's face he was about to punch him but I grabbed his arm and threw him back.
“Come on Darren stop this,” I said.
“Screw you I don't want to be around a couple of fags anyway,” He snapped. He then stormed off. I helped Trevor off of the ground.
“Are you all right,” I asked
“Yeah I'm fine,” He said.
The rest of the school day went by pretty uneventfully. Darren avoided me for the rest of the day. It was almost time for the game and Trevor walked with me to the locker room.
“So are you excited to see me play,” I asked.
“Yes I don’t know much about football but I will be sure to cheer you on,” He said.
“Hey isn’t that Trevor,” a voice said
“Yeah I think it is,” another voice said
We turned and saw 5 big guys from the opposing team's school. Trevor looked at me with concern. It seemed that he knew these guys.
“Felix what school are guys playing against today,” He asks
“Um, we are playing against Glandile. Why do you ask,” I said.
“Oh nothing it's just that's my old school,” He said.
“Why didn’t you tell me,” I said.
“Because I didn’t know you guys played them in sports,” Trevor said. He seemed like he was terrified of these guys.
“So Trevor, it's been a while. I think the last we saw you was that day in the park. That day was so fun we had you crying on the ground like the little bitch you are. So does this guy know that you are fag,” The leader of this group said. He had dark brown hair and he carried himself like he was better than us.
“Come on Felix let's go,” Trevor said. He seemed really uncomfortable.
“What's the rush, Trevor? I thought you would be happy to see your old friend,” A voice said behind the group.
“Liam hi,”
Hey buddy I wouldn’t let him follow you into the locker room. You better be careful he might try to jump you,” t
“He isn’t like that,” I said. I was really getting pissed. Who the hell do these guys think they are to come and treat Trevor like this.
“Isn’t weird knowing that this freak is thinking about your body that way. I was friends with him for years. When I found out he was queer I was grossed out knowing another guy would look at me like that,” Liam said. I looked at Trevor. It looked like he was about to cry. Even though Liam was a jerk it seemed that what he was saying was really upsetting Trevor.
“No, what's weird is that you guys think you have the right to bully someone just because they are different,” I said, putting myself between Trevor and this Liam guy.
“Guys I think that we have another fag here,” Liam said. His friends started laughing.
“Yeah and what if I am what's it to you,” I snapped
“Oh nothing it just means we will show you what we do to fags,” He said his voice was cold with an air of danger to it.
“Hey what are you guys doing,” A deep booming voice said. It was the other team's coach. “Go to the locker rooms and get ready,” Their coach said.
“This isn’t over. You better watch yourself,” Liam whispered to me.
I looked at Trevor. He still seemed to be shaken up by the interaction. “Trevor, are you doing okay? You can go home if you want, you don’t have to stay. I know you were a little shaken up by those guys,” I said.
“No it’s okay I am fine. And anyway I am excited to see my boyfriend wipe the floor with those jerks,” He said.
“Did you just call me your boyfriend,” I asked? Trying my best to hide my excitement.
“Yeah, I did because you are my boyfriend. So you better go get ready. Remember I will be in the stands cheering you on,” He said. He then kissed me on the cheek and walked away.
“Okay, I will,” I shouted. I then entered the locker room. It didn’t seem that Darren told anyone about me dating Trevor. When I went to my gym locker. Darren quickly got up and moved. I didn’t let it bug me, I just needed to focus and get ready to go against those jerks.
