I listened to the relaxing music that played from my headphones, snoring softly as I slept until I felt the bunk bed shake. I knew it was 9 pm so why would anyone be asleep at this time? And the only person who could have shaken the bed is Brooklynn. I peered over the edge of the bunk and looked at her bed but she wasn't there. Then I saw a shadow opening the door, a slit of golden light appearing. I removed my headphones and carefully climbed down the ladder, questioning her as soon as my feet touched the ground. "Brooklynn! What are you doing?" I whispered, startling her.
She rushed over to me as quietly as she could and covered my mouth. "Shh!" She hushed me pointing to the door. "I heard some voices in the lounge! I'm going to go check it out, you wanna join? me?" She said, removing her hand. I thought about it for a moment then nodded. As long as we don't get in trouble, I think I'll be fine with this. Brooklynn took hold of my arm and dragged me to the doors that separated the dorms from the lounge. The doors were open just a crack and just as she had said, there were voices. I could recognise one voice. "My brother is in there," I informed Brooklynn.
We both peeked around the edge of the door and saw Kenji and Darius, arguing. We could hear their voices more clearly now. "I think, best take your arm off me... friend," We heard Darius say. "Why don't you make me, friend," Kenji replied, resting his arm around Darius's shoulder and glaring. "Wow..." I murmured, shaking my head as I watched the two of them, brow raised. Brooklynn began to walk towards them silently so I followed. Kenji and Darius stayed in that position, glaring at one another until Brooklynn took a photo of them, the light flashing. "So that's what toxic masculinity looks like"
She moved her camera down and smirked while I stood behind her, arms crossed. Darius's widened and he began to blush when he realized they had woken us up. He tried to apologize. "Uh, sorry we woke you. I-" "He was sneaking out, but I set him straight," Kenji interrupted, pushing Darius back as he walked up to us. Darius tried to deny this but Kenji was ahead of him. "Look, I try to look out for the younger kids. It's who I am" He continued, walking over to Brooklynn and me and standing beside us. I gave my brother a look. There was no way he did that- "Lies," I said, Kenji rolling his eyes.
Darius sent one last glare at Kenji then turned back to Brooklynn and me. He now had looked dejected. "You guys don't understand. I've been waiting my whole life to get here, and I'm gonna make the most of it. those lights must be coming from the compy enclosure. I gotta check it out!" He pointed outside, where faint lights were glowing. He seemed really desperate to see the compies but I was hesitant. We were already breaking camp rules by being up at this hour, sneaking off could be really bad! But then, Brooklynn and Darius haven't been on the island before and they could end up getting lost... or worse.
Kenji barely remembers anything about Isla Nublar unless it's dangerous, I can't just leave them with him! It doesn't matter if he is the older sibling, he definitely isn't the smarter one of us and has proven that many times! Brooklynn pointed her phone at Darius, "Sneaking out to see dinosaurs in the dead of night, mad danger of getting caught, great mood lighting... I guess that means, we're going rogue! Kapow!" SHe exclaimed excitedly, Darius's entire expression brightening. "Kiara, you are coming with us, just in case you try to tell Dave and Roxie about this," Brooklynn said, glancing at me.
"She wouldn't tell on us," Kenji told her, grinning. "Yeah, but I was going to come with you anyways," I retorted, sighing. Kenji grabbed my arm and dragged me towards the elevator, Brooklynn and Darius walking beside us. As we went down, I took a deep breath. This is going to be a long night. I could already tell.
By the time we had reached the enclosure, I was tired and regretfully. Why did I choose to follow them! And now that I think about it, I probably would have been dragged along even if I hadn't chosen to follow! We tiptoed by a truck but came to a sudden stop.
"I think this is it. The truck definitely headed in this direction," Darius whispered, turning to look at us. "Of course this is it. Why else would they have-" Kenji exclaimed loudly before I slapped my hand over his mouth and shushed him. If I wasn't here, they would have already been caught! The truck engine turned on as keys jangled. The lights switched on, almost blinding us. I heard someone moving towards where we were crouching. "We need to move!" Brooklynn whispered, motioning for everyone to follow her. We silently moved towards the staircase on the side of the enclosure, peering through the rails at the truck.
We moved just in time as I saw the man looking out through the window and behind the truck, in the spot we were just in. We climbed up the stairs, still crouched until the truck left. We and stood up properly and looked around. I saw a sign that said danger, a claw imprinted on it. This made me feel uneasy. As I looked at the enclosure, I felt a sudden shiver go up to my spine. Compies are small dinosaurs, they wouldn't need an enclosure this big... I was about to tell Darius, Brooklyn, and Kenji when they started fighting. "Hey Brooklynn, you can get a good shot from over here. Allow me," Kenji smirked.
He attempted to take Brooklynn's phone out of her hands. "No thanks. I can-" Brooklynn started to say, pulling it back with a scowl, "Just. Hey!" "Let go-" 'Let me-" "Just give me back my, ugh!" Brooklynn groaned as her phone dropped into the enclosure. "Thanks, Kenji. Real smooth" Brooklyn hissed sarcastically, rolling her eyes in annoyance. Kenji glanced back anxiously before saying, "Relax. I'll get it." He started to climb into the pen to our surprise, so Darius and I rushed forward. "Wait, what are you doing-!?" I exclaimed, terrified.
I knew Kenji could act stupid but what if whatever dinosaur in there killed him!? He interjected, "Relax Kiara, I got it." With that, he jumped into the pen and picked up the phone. He landed heavily but stood up almost immediately. "See? Ha! Good as new." He exclaimed. "Great. Now, just climb back up and gently hand it to me," Brooklynn groaned. "Sure, sure, right after I get a sweet dino-pic for your followers. No need to thank me" Kenji replied, somehow unlocking her lock screen and opening the camera. He walked towards the edge of the gate separating where he stood and the enclosure.
"Um, guys... this isn't the compy pen" Darius whispered fearfully. I heard rusting as saw the leaves in the bushes shake. "Quiet junior" Kenji replied, "The grown-ups are talking. Oh, your followers are gonna love this. Here compy compy compy." I heard more rustling and noticed the pile of bones and skulls. That can't be from a compy... I don't know what enclosure we were at but it definitely wasn't the compy one! "This isn't the compy pen!" I shouted, finally getting their attention. Appearing out of nowhere, a velociraptor with a blue streak on her side began to stalk closer and closer to my brother, Watching him closely.
Kenji's face turned pale and his eyes widened as he watched the raptor in fear, his hand still inside of the enclosure. The raptor snarled and stood in front of Kenji, only a few feet away, her head to the side as she inspected the invader in her domain. If my brother doesn't get out of there right now, he might die! Kenji stared at the raptor, petrified but, he pressed a button on Brooklynn's phone and a bright flash went out, angering the velociraptor. The raptor screeched and rushed forwards, right towards Kenji...
