My brother screamed out of pure terror as the blue-marked raptor charged. She latched herself onto the barred fence that separated her from Kenji, snarling viciously. "Kenji!" I screamed, shaking in fear as I saw the colour draining out of Kenji's face. The raptor glanced at me and growled before snapping her attention back to Kenji as he began to breathe loudly. He began to run, his speed amplified by his terror, searching for a way out of this nightmare. When he did find it, he began to hit the door hurriedly, yelling at us to open it. I turned back to Brooklynn and Darius who was immobile, staring at the scene before us petrified.
"Come on!" I exclaimed, bringing them out of their anxious trance. I looked around where we stood until I noticed a control box with many hypnotising colours. I ran for it and Brooklynn and Darius followed me, closely behind. "Which one do we press?" Brooklynn asked, switching her attention from a crying Kenji and dozens upon dozens of bright buttons. The raptor let out a calling growl, raising her head and holding it high in the sky as the screeching noise pounded against my ears. "D'ah! Open the gate!" Kenji yelled, more tears gushing from his eyes. Never, has he been this scared before.
Brooklynn and I looked through the buttons and tried to find the one that would let out my brother. She hastily slammed her hand down on one amber button, a blaring alarm going off with bright red lights that blinded us. We then heard a creaking noise, coming from the bars of the enclosure. I peered over the edge of the platform where we stood, cautious not to let myself tip over. The second gate that differentiated Kenji and the raptor was beginning to open... Slowly but certainly. Millions of thoughts flashed through my mind as I felt my legs weaken, my body slipping.
I held onto the rails tighter to keep myself up but three words kept coming back to my head. He might die... What do I do! My brother is about to die and there isn't anything for me to do about it! Why did they come here! Why did Kenji come here! Why didn't we all just stay in our Dorms and sleep like Ben, Sammy and Yasmina!? "Oh please, let me out! Come on!" Kenji screamed as three other raptors rushed out the bushes and came to stand in formation, besides the blue one. They might attack. The blue raptor stepped closer to him, snarling at the others so they wouldn't move past her.
Darius then began to kick hard at a yellow pipe that was wrapped around the interior of the enclosure like a snake. It eventually broke from the impact and a cloud of white steam was released, covering the now perplexed and slightly anxious raptors who took a few steps back. Darius then jumped into the enclosure, landing hard but straight on the ground. "Darius! What are you doing!?" I asked, my voice becoming more shrill as fear overcame me. Two deaths, because I didn't convince them to stay at camp... "Dude! Please tell me you have a plan!" Kenji exclaimed, staring at Darius in confusion, fear and outrage.
Darius motioned for Kenji to move away from the gate and stand beside him. "Let's move! The steam should keep them busy!" As the thick cloud of steam began to clear, we all gasped. Brooklynn was still messing around with the buttons, trying desperately to find the right one while I called out for my brother. "Oh, crud," Darius muttered, his eyes wide. "Brooklynn, we have to try and help them," I screamed, gaining her attention. She turned and ran towards me but tripped over her un-done laces, crashing into me. I was thrown, screaming, over the railing and landing hard on my side right between Darius and the raptors.
"Kiara!" Darius and my brother yelled worriedly, before cringing away from the snarling raptors. "I'm... alright," I whispered, my gaze only on the four raptors before me. Each of which, was hissing and snapping their jaws at me. As the blue raptor lunged at me, teeth bared, I screamed fearfully and raised my hands to cover my face. Kenji ran forwards and pulled me back by the back of my pyjama shirt. All of us were about to die. "We are all ok," Darius tried to calm us down while my heart rate only quickened I knew raptors and they never hesitate when hunting. We were their prey. "How are we ok!?" I screamed as I was helped up. A green and black raptor sneaked up beside me and tried to bite my leg but I pulled back quickly the raptor being nipped at by the blue one and sent back.
"I'm... scared," I whispered. Kenji brought me into a defensive hug and held onto me tight. Darius seemed to be thinking about something. "Kenji, those bones. Check for a raptor skull." Kenji and I stared at him. "What!?" Darius sighed and glanced back from us at the raptor, taking a few steps back as he explained, "In the game I-" Kenji glared at Darius, sending him dirty looks. "You wanna talk about video games now?" He asked rhetorically before glancing back at the nearing, growling raptors. Without warning, all the raptors screeched, each, in turn, snapping their sharp jaws.
Kenji pulled me towards the gate and used one hand to hit it shouting, "No! Let us out! Let us out!" We were all against the gate with nothing to do. Brooklynn and I were in tears, Kenji was sniffling and Darius was pale-faced. Suddenly, blinding white lights switched on, surrounding the enclosure and illuminating our tear-stained faces. I peered over the enclosure and noticed Roxie holding a large piece of raw meat. "Hey! Come and get it!" She chucked the meat far away from us, three of the raptors rushing over and violently fighting for it. The blue raptor, the only one that didn't go to fight for food, looked at me right in the eye, her gaze unwavering.
She continued to advance, regardless of what her pack did. "Get out of there!" Roxie yelled as the gate behind us opened. Kenji and Darius were hauled back sharply. As I was being tightly held by my brother, I was dragged along with them, right out the enclosure. We were pulled out just in time as the raptor lunged forwards, ready for the kill. The gate shut as the raptor crashed, snarling in aggravation. I glanced backwards and saw Dave, but he was a blurry figure as the tears that continued to pour from my eyes like waterfalls, blocked my vision. I could hear Dave breathing heavily and Kenji's grip on me began to soften.
Darius was holding his arm guiltily. Multiple vans drove towards us and many ACU staff rushed out, "Secure the paddock!" One shouted, "Move!", "This way!", "Come one, move!" more of them yelled back. Darius looked towards Dave and smiled gratefully. "Dave, that was... thank you so much." Dave gave him a small smile before replying, "Oh, that's standard procedure, Darius. I do that kind of stuff all the time. Give me a second." He finished shortly, before bending over and vomiting. I turned away and covered my ears until I felt someone else move.
I saw Roxie rushing towards us, taking over a sickly Dave while Brooklynn guiltily walked over, following behind. "Are you hurt!? Is everyone all right!?" She asked exasperated. I hugged Roxie, snuffling as my crying began to stop. "We're fine..." I whispered, "But, that was, horrible." Roxie glanced down at me sympathetically but switched back to a strict scowl as she noticed Kenji trying to sneak away. Roxie let go of me and grabbed Kenji by the shoulder, bringing him back. "Woah, Woah, Woah! Where do you think you're going? You are all in big trouble!" She exclaimed, glaring as if her life depended on it. I didn't say anything.
I don't want to get into more trouble than I'm already in and besides, I still chose to follow them and chose to listen to Brooklynn. We would have died if it wasn't for Dave and Roxie so this was fair. Darius seemed to find this unfair and tried to speak against this, "I- But he- he was-" "Save it! We'll decide what to do you and Kiara later If you even get to remain here after a stunt like this!" She retorted, frowning in my direction as though disappointed. That was worse than being punished. Brooklynn stayed silent, a scowl set on her face. Roxie hadn't said anything to her yet so I gave her a small pat on the arm.
She looked at me before shrugging my arm off sadly, walking beside Dave and Roxie who were headed to the jeep. Darius, Kenji and I all followed after them, sitting in the same seats we had sat in on the way to camp. I glanced at my brother and noticed he was shaking slightly, his arms crossed and he frowned at the floor. He was nervous. I gave him a quick, warm hug rested against him as we were all driven back to camp. Just as I had thought, this really was a long night.
