Dave and Roxie sent Darius, Kenji and me to the main lounge and told us to wait. They then left with Brooklynn and spoke to her in a spacious room. We could hear how furious they were and it worried me. As my mind went back to when we were in the enclosure, being hunted by velociraptors- the deadliest creatures alive on our planet as we spoke- I shuddered and snuggled up to my brother, resting my head on his shoulder and holding into his closest arm. Kenji didn't object, but I don't think he would have either way. Darius was silent as he watched us, but his expression was filled with anger, his face scrunched up as though he had something to say.
Eventually, walking to stand in front of us, he spat out in annoyance, "How could you be so stupid!?" Darius glared at Kenji who rolled his eyes and scowled. "I do a lot of stupid things, so your gonna have to be more specific than that," He started, Darius' expression darkening as he felt more annoyed. He continued, "Girls love a grand gesture, Junior. You'll understand when you're older." At my brother's idiotic choice of words, my mind's attention now solely on this conversation, I stopped snuggling up to him, regardless of how comforting it was. I gave him a sharp look and he rolled his eyes once more.
"Ok, maybe it wasn't my best idea. Look, I don't want us to get kicked out when our dad..." I noticeably tensed and started at the ground. "Our whole life, we've been trying to make him proud. If he finds out I messed up again, he might... Finally, give up on me for good, and I can't leave Kiara." Would our dad go that far? Sure we rarely ever saw him and we're mostly brought up by our maids, ignoring Candy, but that doesn't mean he would stop loving one of us, just like that. He is just, busy... Darius' expression softened but he still seemed hesitant to believe Kenji. "Would your dad just, give up on him?" He quietly asked.
"I hope he wouldn't do that, but I don't know if he really would," I replied, all of us going silent. I think my uncertainty was enough of an answer for him. I don't want to lie, so I said exactly what I thought. I don't know. Darius sat down beside me, more guilt pouring into his face. Dave and Roxie then entered the room, bringing double the fury along with them. "We gave Brooklynn a warning for sneaking out," Dave angrily started. Oh, so she wasn't in trouble? That's a relief. "But what you chuckleheads did!" "Especially you Kenji! Your recklessness put yours, Darius, Kiara and Dave's lives in danger! We should call your father and tell him about this!"
Roxie, please don't... Even if he might not give up, I don't want him to be mad at Kenji and me. "It was my fault!" Darius blurted, taking us all by surprise. "I jumped into the pit. Kenji was trying to save me and Kiara was pushed into the enclosure. She never wanted to come with us in the first place but... I forced her to." Why was he lying? He never forced me to do anything? Well, he isn't lying about me being pushed in or not wanting to come with them in the first place. Kenji took Darius' words to his advantage. "Yeah, that's it. I was saving the poor, confused little kid." He was pushing our luck.
"I'm sorry, so Darius the dino-genius and Kiara the park-expert were saved by Kenji, the kid who thinks dinosaurs went extinct because and I quote, their farts turned the air trashy?..." Roxie repeated, trying to understand everything that had been said. "Prove me wrong, you," Kenji whispered, resting his head won't the back of the sofa while smirking. Darius and I simultaneously shook our heads, sighing at my brother. "Yeah, it's just that Brooklynn's account is quite different from yours," Roxie started, eyeing us suspiciously. "Pfft! Brooklyn. Look, it was dark, she was confused, she needs glasses. Vanity, am I right? What's important here is that I'll keep looking out for the kid, here. Your welcome," Kenji smugly said, crossing his arms.
Kenji knows that Brooklynn saw everything that happened. Now he is just lying like Darius, but if they tell the truth, Roxie will call my dad and then Kenji will get in trouble. "No harm, no foul. Let's chalk this whole thing up to experience! Lessons, friendships, that's what camp is about! Who's with me?" Dave cheered, his optimistic attitude returning? I'm just glad he isn't mad anymore. Rosie narrowed her eyes and pointed to Kenji and Darius. "Fine, but one more misstep..." She hissed. "I-" Darius started, "we won't let you down!" "So uh, what are we going to do tomorrow?" I asked hesitantly, trying to lighten the mood like Sammy and Dave seemed to do flawlessly.
Dave and Roxie glanced at each other for a moment before their gaze landed on me. "Oh, you just wait and see Kiara," Roxie smiled, her expression sinister. "For now, off to bed, all of you. And, don't let me hear from you until morning," She continued, pointing to the door. We all got up from the sofa and walked out the door. I stopped and waved Dave and Roxie good night then verbally did the same to Darius. For Kenji, I hugged him and he ruffled my hair, making it all messy. "Good night Kenji," I smiled. "Good night Kiara," He returned my smile and we went our separate ways, him to the guy's dorm and me to the girl's one.
I went into the room as quietly as possible so I wouldn't wake up the others, climbed up the ladder of the bunk and got into bed. I looked at the dark sky, illuminated by trillions upon trillions of shining stars and sighed with a small smile. Tomorrow will be hectic, there is no doubt. The next morning, after a classical Costa Rican breakfast for everyone, with some added fizzy drinks for energy, we were all driven in the jeep to a pile of dark, horrendous smelling dung... "Out you three get," Roxie smiled, gesturing for us to leave. She and Dave came out of the jeep and waited for us expectancy by the pile of, dung.
Reluctantly, we climbed out of the jeep and stood in front of the dung, making sure we kept our distance. I don't understand why I have to be here too, everyone already explained I was pushed into the enclosure, I didn't choose to go in! "Have fun cleaning this up, guys," Roxie smiled, chucking three rusty and filthy spades at us. We easily caught the spades but I held it daintily from the handle. I don't want to touch any of this filth, it doesn't matter if it is a punishment or not! And about this punishment, why should I be here? "Roxie?" I said, frowning. She raised her brow and replied, "Yes Kiara?"
"Why do I have to stay here with Darius and Kenji? Can't I come with you guys?" I asked, Roxie, beginning to sigh. She replied quietly so only I could hear. "Dave and I can't watch over you and you and Kenji have the most experience with the park so it makes more sense to ask one of you," Roxie explained, glancing meaningfully at Kenji who was whacking his shoe with one of the spades to remove dung. "And you don't want to ask my brother because he is the least reliable one of us?" I confirmed, "Yeah." Roxie smiled pityingly then turned back to the others. "We're going to the genetics lab!" She exclaimed, the others cheering while Darius groaned, glaring at Kenji venomously.
As Roxie climbed back into the jeep, Brooklynn brought her phone up to her face, aimed the camera at us and moved her finger. She wouldn't dare... Click. She took a photo of us, in front of dinosaur dung! How could she! I hope she doesn't post that on her vlog otherwise, I will have a lot to say... Dave then threw a small black bottle towards Darius and said, "Cologne. That'll help with the smell. And the ladies. What-what? But mostly the smell. The stench of dinosaur poo can really linger." Help with the ladies? I rolled my eyes. Sometimes, however amusing Dave could be, he didn't think about what he said.
"What? But..." Darius began, before giving up and sighing. The jeep's engine started, signalling everyone that they were about to leave. Sammy and Yasmina waved at me while Brooklynn scrolled through her phone, Ben pinching his nose because of the smell. Then the jeep began to move and they all drove away, turning a corner and leaving our line of sight. "Ugh, gross," Kenji muttered, staring at the dung on the sole of Darius' shoe. "Ugh! This bites!" Darius yelled, "Thanks to you, I'm shovelling poop instead of watching a live dinosaur birth!" He had a point, but I'm sure we will get another chance to see the lab.
Sure, Kenji and I have seen it before so we know what to expect, but I don't want to say anything and ruin this broken chance even more. "That's only been my dream since, uh, I don't know... forever!" Darius continued, throwing his spade to the ground. Some dung splattered as it landed so I moved back, staring at it in disgust. Kenji rolled his eyes and smirked at Darius. "Dude, that's not a dream. A dream is like when you save a bunch of mermaids from a shark," He retorted, leaning on the handle of his spade. I think he might slip and fall into the pile, could be entertaining!
"Whatever! Figures you wouldn't understand. The scientists are heroes. They recreated the T.rex, a T.rex!! Do you know what it takes to do that?" Darius snapped back, crossing his arms. Now, I was just watching their conversation, watching them speak back to one another. "It's cute you're this excited about some dumb lamb. Noobs like you don't know half of what's in this place," Kenji smugly said, an air of added pride surrounding him. Oh, I know exactly what he means... We are not doing that. "Like what?" Darius asked, forgetting his anger as curiosity overpowered him. Kenji snicked, making Darius more aggravated.
"Your all talk," Darius scoffed glaring at him. "We've been to this park, like, 50 kajillion times! I'm certain I'm in the know, junior. And since you helped me out earlier Darius, I might be willing to show you the good stuff" Kenji made an attempt to Darius who looked away thoughtfully. "Kenji, don't you dare!" I hissed, Darius thankfully not hearing my words. If he heard me say that, he would be too curious. "No, no way! I cannot get into more trouble!" Darius eventually replied, Kenji sighing. "Eh. Hey, suit yourself. You've only been waiting a lifetime to see dinosaurs. I just thought you'd be interested in seeing the one they stopped showing to the public. But... whatevs. It's only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Kenji leaned by Darius' ear and grinned slyly. Darius smiled and I knew Kenji had won.
