We followed the sound we had heard and it led us to the fence! I peered through the gaps, hoping to see Toro again, from a safe distance of course! Darius began to inspect the fence while Kenji grinned, proud "Kenji delivers!" He said as the colour began to drain from Darius' face. He looked terrified. "You know this park like the back of your hand, right?" He asked, Kenji copying his actions and scrutinizing the fence. "Uh, duh," Kenji said, rolling his eyes and moving back, staring at Darius with an offended look. "So that means, you know which side of the fence the carnotaurus is on?" Darius whispered, beginning to shake. Now I was starting to feel anxious.
There was no way the tunnel would lead to the inside of the enclosure, right? I'm sure we are on the safe side!.. If we aren't then we are in danger... Suddenly, the ground began to rumble beneath our feet and a low snarl sounded from behind us. Toro was behind us... Toro was behind us! I was petrified. We turned around slowly and were standing face to face with the carnotaur which growled ravenously. "Run!" Darius yelled, grabbing my hand and pulling me into a run, Kenji following behind. I glanced back, whimpering, as Toro began to chase after us, snarling and baring his sharp teeth.
A large, broken down tree log was blocking out the path but Darius and I slid underneath. Kenji looked back at Toro and panicked, running to the side and tripping over the upturned roots. "Don't leave me!" He screamed. I snatched my hand out of Darius' grip and ran to my brother, helping him stand and pushing him forward. I am not losing him in this park, especially not to dinosaurs! We continued to run away from the speeding carnotaur and gasped as hr charged through the log, breaking it in half as he gave a tremendous roar. "Guys, it's gaining!" Kenji yelled. "It's fast, but not on turns!" Darius yelled back.
"Zigzag, on my count," He ordered. "One, two, three!" He ran sharply to the right, followed by Kenji and me. We saw Toro slip as he tried to change directions but we didn't stop moving as fast as we could. We continued running through the enclosure, until Toro cut through the side of the path we were following, snapping at my arm. I screamed as he missed by inches, crashing into a tree and shaking his head, dizzy. We eventually came into a clearing by the edge of the enclosure. There was a small box, probably for food, and it was large enough for us to go through! "Up ahead!" I exclaimed, pointing in its direction.
The two nodded and Kenji dove through, clambering to the other side. Darius did the same and once he was out, I began to crawl through the tight space but then the lid on the other side, closed in front of me. It had locked me in. I didn't have enough space to crawl back out. I was stuck. Toro then burst out of the tree-filled part of his enclosure and snarled, slowly moving towards me. "Help!" I cried, trying to force the lid to open. Darius and Kenji tried to prise it open but we all struggled and Toro was only coming closer. Kenji then moved back and ran off to the edge of the jungle, Darius yelling, "Kenji! Are you freaking kidding me!?"
As Darius and I continued to struggle with trying to lift the lid, Toro's snarls becoming louder, Kenji ran back with a large stick. He dug it underneath the underside of the lids and with some help from Darius, prised it open. Just as Toro charged, they pulled me out of the food box, all of us ending in a heap on the dusty ground. The carnotaur had crashed into the closed food box, bending it from the harsh impact and watching us with a large gash on his snout. Kenji laughed at Toro. "Diddums da big dino hurt his widdle nose?" He scoffed. "You think you're slick, Toro? You got nothing!" We both glanced at Darius' perplexed expression.
"Toro?" I said, pointing at the carnotaur's two horns on the side of his head. "Cause of the horns?" Kenji said, his brow rising slightly. "Yeah, I get it. Hey Toro, your arms are... Pretty much vestigial at this point! Ha!" Darius hesitantly laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. Kenji grinned, "Yeah boy! That's what's up! That's what's-" Toro launched himself at the enclosure fence, the impact making the ground shake, all of us drop to the ground, and make a loud crash echo. We all stood up, dusting the dirt from our clothes. I sighed and looked at the two of them as a thought crossed my mind.
"What time are the others meant to get back from the lab?" I asked them, Darius' eyes widening. "We have to go, now!" He exclaimed, grabbing my hand again and dragging me away. I began to blush, embarrassed, but there was just one thing; I thought only Kenji knew the way back? Kenji ran past us so he could thankfully, lead the way.

Once we were back by the pile of dung, we all crouched down, our hands on our knees and our breaths sharp. I quickly looked around for a clean area to sit. When I found one, I sat down and took my hair out of the ponytail letting it all fall down my back. I began to silently braid a few strands, my breathing slowing as I calmed disown after that thrilling dino-chase. I hope nothing else like this happens because I don't want to get sent home, I want to make new friends and have fun! I noticed Darius staring at me out of the corner of my eye. He seemed to be lost in thought but his gaze didn't leave me.
I was about to ask if he was alright but the jeep returned with Dave, Roxie and the other campers. Darius stood up and exclaimed, "Hey guys!" He sounded a little too enthusiastic. "Why are you two so out of breath?" Roxie asked suspiciously, staring at Darius and my brother. "And why is Kiara on the floor?" she continued, giving me a look. I quickly stood up and dusted my clothes again, smiling sheepishly. "Just doing the job we're told," Darius said, picking up a random spade and resting it on his shoulder. "How was the trip to the lab?" I asked, "See anything interesting?"
"Oh well, you know, Ben fell in love with a dinosaur and Superstar here got us booted from the lab," Yasmina said, casting Brooklynn an annoyed look. I chuckled and began to grin. "That is not what happened!" Brooklynn retorted furiously, looking up from her phone screen. I looked at Ben who had a broken-hearted expression. "So Ben, what happened with the dinosaur?" I asked, hoping to cheer him up. I know cheery attitudes didn't come to me as easily as it seemed to for Sammy and Dave but it was worth a shot. "I met a baby ankylosaur and named her Bumpy... She was so, small! And then Doctor Wu said she wasn't good enough for the park," Ben muttered, a frown forming on his face.
"Oh," Was all I managed to say. Sammy then asked us cheerfully, "How'd poop patrol go?" "Awesome!" Kenji replied, "You all should have seen how I owned-" Darius whacked him in the gut with the back of his spade and finished off his sentence. "This valuable experience! We learnt a lot about ourselves and, yep!" Roxie didn't seem convinced but she stayed quiet for a moment before saying, "Well then, hit the showers. And maybe stay in there for a while?" The engine turned on and the jeep began to move to the camp. As they drove off, Ben hesitantly called out to us, "Use soap. Lots of soap!"
Once they were completely out of view, Darius dropped the act. "Two near-death experiences in two days? We can't tell anyone about Toro or we're definitely getting sent home!" I nodded, "We can't risk someone slipping it out accidentally." Kenji sighed, glancing at us. "I can't believe no one will know I saved your lives." Darius smiled at him. "I'll know, Kenji," He said. Kenji smiled back, surprising Darius as it was one of his genuine ones. "So, we even now, Darius?" Kenji asked nervously. Darius laughed. "Yeah, we're even," He said before asking a question with a look that told us he was joking.
"You do know farts didn't kill dinosaurs, right?" "Prove me wrong, yo," Kenji said, smirking. "There is a lot of proof- Okay, first I'm going to take a five-hour shower and then tonight we're going over how the atmosphere works!" As they began to walk away, I called out to Darius, "Wait!" He stopped as I ran to catch up with him. "Yeah?" I hugged him tightly, ignoring the heat that violently rushed to my cheeks and smiled warmly. "Thanks for giving my brother another chance!" I said, hugging him again. As I pulled back, he smiled, his cheeks red and a flustered look on his face.
Well, he doesn't seem that bad," Darius told me, rubbing the back of his neck. He returned my smile and we began to walk to the elevator, talking about Kenji. We stood in the elevator and the doors closed, bringing us to the common room. "You know, you and Kenji seem a little too different to be related," Darius joked, nudging my arm. I laughed and nudged him back. "Trust me, we are more alike than you think!" I said, grinning. I think I've made my first friend at camp!
