Shībài zhě walked through the streets of Beijing, trying to avoid the main streets of the city which upset David as he wanted to see one of the biggest cities in the world.
"C'mon." David groaned after walking around with Shībài zhě for the last 3 hours. The sun had fully risen and the people of the city had woken up and started their days. "Can't we go to at least one major city landmark?"
"Sorry kid." Shībài zhě said as he turned the third corner in the last 5 minutes. "But I've got some work to do and I have to figure out what's happening to you too."
They continued to walk through the streets for another 2 hours, turning as many corners and crossing as many blocks as possible. After a while, he decided to rest. He had packed some food from his friend's restaurant and after finding a nice quiet place in a nearby park, he sat down and began to eat. David finally asked a question that was bothering him.
"Mr. zhě, do you have a family," David asked him.
"No. I don't." Shībài zhě said as he started to eat his food.
"What about friends? Like the chef at the restaurant."
"He's an old acquaintance. I knew him from high school and when he wanted to go into the restaurant business, I gave him a start-up loan."
"So you have no one."
"I have co-workers. But they're busy most of the time so I can't meet them much."
David paused momentarily as he looked at Shībài zhě's tired face.
"That sounds really lonely," David said.
"Don't sweat it, kid." Shībài zhě answered. "I'm used to it now."
"I know that feeling."
"How so?"
"The feeling that you're better off by yourself," David said as he sat down next to Shībài zhě and curled his feet up. "The people around you leave, your friends, family, everyone. This gives you the feeling that you don't need anyone else. You end up closing yourself to others and don't meet anyone else meaningful anymore."
There was a silence between the two of them as they sat in their thoughts. Shībài zhě looked at David and began to wonder, how could a kid almost 20 years younger than him have experienced the sadness he faced in his entire life. After a long while, Shībài zhě spoke once again.
"How about we start opening up from now." He said.
"What?" David asked, wondering what he meant.
"Let's start opening up to others and make more friends. Let's start with each other."
Shībài zhě raised his hand for David to shake.
Tears started to well up in David's eyes as he looked at the first friend he had made in years. He shook his hand and the both of them started their friendship.
"Well, well, it seems that you have finally lost your mind, 'Mr. zhě'. Shaking hands with thin air now are we?" A man in a nice suit said as he approached the two of them.
“About time you made your move.” Shībài zhě said as he stood up and collected the plastic plate and utensils and made his way to the nearby trashcan. “You’ve been following me all day and I was beginning to wonder if you had lost your motivation for capturing me.”
“We were just waiting for the exact moment to strike.” The man said. “And you just gave that to us in this completely empty park.”
The man snapped his fingers and other people started to appear from different sides of the park. Unlike the leader who looked quite civilized, these henchmen looked like proper gangsters, with tattoos on their arms and chest while holding weapons such as pipes and steel bats. They kept pouring out until there were 20 of them surrounding David and Shībài zhě.
David was scared of the situation as he had never been in any physical altercation before but he had been on the receiving end of the beatings.
“Mr. zhě, I think we should run.” He said with a trembling voice as he tugged Shībài zhě’s clothes.
Shībài zhě on the other hand, showed no signs of fear as he stood there and looked around at his enemies.
“Are you sure that I am the one who is trapped?” Shībài zhě said with complete confidence.
“What’s that supposed to mean you old fool.” One of the gangsters said as he got closer. “Look around you. You're surrounded. And how do you expect to get out of this.”
Without an answer, Shībài zhě dashed forward and punched the gangster in the face with such force, that he went flying off and by the time he hit the ground, he was out cold.
The others looked in disbelief, but without any warning, Shībài zhě lunged at the next enemy grabbing him by his arm and slamming him into the ground.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU IDIOTS.” The man shouted. “GET HIM.”
Everyone was brought back to their senses, and they all rushed at Shībài zhě from every direction. This did not bother him at all as he ran after them instead. His aggressive behavior caught everyone off guard as he grabbed two people by their collars and smashed their heads together. He then slid in between them to attack the others from their blind spots with relentless punches. He managed to hit multiple people as he alternated his punches between four different people aiming for their heads, arms, and chests as they began to fall one by one, and others replaced them. Some of them decided to rush him at the same time and not leave any gap between them as they would attack. The plan failed as Shībài zhě responded with a roundhouse kick that dropped the entire group at once and this response was followed by sweeping kicks and picking them back up to finish them while they were on their feet. The weapons that each of them was holding now littered the ground around Shībài zhě as he continued to take them all out one by one until only 2 of them were left. One of them was a man double the size of Shībài zhě while the other held a knife in hand. The big one rushed at Shībài zhě trying to tackle him to the ground. But he sidestepped and the big guy missed him. He turned around to attack Shībài zhě once again but he was hit in the face by one of the steel bats that was surrounding him. The hit was continued with a combo which did not leave him with any room to breathe until he finally gave up and dropped down. In a last-ditch attempt, the man with the knife dashed at Shībài zhě from behind hoping to stab while he was busy. David wanted to shout out a warning, but it was not needed as all Shībài zhě did was duck down, sweep the attacker’s legs, and grab the knife as he let go of it.
The 20 gangsters that were all so confident in defeating the alone Shībài zhě now all lay unconscious. He turned to the man who had instigated the fight as he tried to back away.
“Stay back!” He said as he started sweating and walking backward, away from the monster in front of him. “I’m warning you. You won’t get away with this.”
Shībài zhě did not seem to listen to anything the man was saying as he walked towards him, knife in hand. The man turned around and started to run, but before he could take even one step, he was tackled by Shībài zhě, and the knife was held to his throat. Tears started to come from his eyes as he started begging.
“Please spare me.” The man cried out. “You won’t ever see me again.”
Once again, Shībài zhě did not seem to hear the words at all. He prepared to slit his throat but then David spoke up from behind.
“Mr. zhě?” He said as he looked at Shībài zhě’s back. “What are you doing?”
Shībài zhě was snapped out of his trance. He looked down at the pathetic man in front of him. He turned the knife and hit the man on the forehead with the hilt, knocking him out. Shībài zhě stood up and walked out of the park. David followed behind, calling after him but he gave no response. They reached a telephone booth where Shībài zhě made a call. David stood outside, completely in the dark. He finally came out after a while. He looked at David, staring at him with curious eyes. Shībài zhě sighed and said, “Wanna take a tour of the city.”
