Francophones are the middle children of Canada. We have been oppressed by the anglophones, they get defensive when we talk about it and I can understand why because when I turn around towards the First Nations, I feel the same guilt, I can get just as defensive.
It is by looking inwards that I realize that if I love my own culture more than I waste my time hating anglos, why wouldn’t first nations people feel the same?
That is who it is important to play on positive emotions like empathy or even admiration for an underdog hero rather than dumb, toxic guilt. Guilt just makes people stupid! Nobody wants our guilt!
As for the FNs, they want clean drinking water. They want their voices heard. They want protection, not abuse from law enforcement. They want to know what happened to their missing women and girls
Land acknowledgements are cool but they can be a token gesture, virtue signaling if you will. A more discrete gesture that would do much more would be if acadians, and anglos, well, everyone spoke to FN people and went to reserves for more than just cheap cigarettes. Everyone should attend a pow wow one in their lives, stop at a store on a reserve, have a chat!
