Chasing Reflection

12 : Meet Cute II

12 : Meet Cute II

Apr 13, 2022

“Yukihide-san, we finally met. I'm Kinnosuke Hiro." Kinnosuke's face brightened.

"This isn't a dream, is it?" Yukihide's trembling hands opened the page of his sketchbook showing Kinnosuke's face sketch, then he looked at the sketch and the man before him in turn, "Are you real?"

Kinnosuke's eyes widened when he found out that Yukihide had been drawing the sketches of his face all along. All this time Kinnosuke thought he was the only one who saw Yukihide's reflection. It turned out that the same thing happened to Yukihide. Knowing their fate was the same, Kinnosuke showed a scan of Yukihide's sketch on his cell phone.

"This is not a dream. We're not crazy, Yukihide-san. I see you in the mirror. You too?"

Speechless, Yukihide nodded slowly. Now both of them seemed to be in their own world looking at each other in disbelief.

Inagaki pressed the stop recording button and then uploaded the video on his Instagram. He wrote the caption: Kinnosuke Hiro finally found his true love.

After finishing his task as a good friend, he felt like he was third-wheeling Yukihide and Kinnosuke. Inagaki had better return to his mother. He would definitely get scolded for ignoring her call.

"Yukihide-san, I'll excuse myself." Inagaki smiled awkwardly. He pretended not to know Kinnosuke.

Yukihide felt guilty ignoring Inagaki, “I'm sorry, Inagaki-san. Nice talking to you."

"No problem. See you later, Yukihide-san.”

Perhaps this was God's punishment because Kinnosuke never believed in miracles. Inagaki's meeting with Yukihide was considered a miracle. If his best friend hadn’t met Yukihide, perhaps Kinnosuke would’ve been on campus, wandering around, searching for the guy from his reflection.

The man beside him didn't dare to look at him, unlike Kinnosuke who shamelessly studied every detail of Yukihide's face, remembering what he saw every time he looked in the mirror. Then he looked at the sketch of himself in Yukihide's sketchbook. Okay, he might be narcissistic because he thought Yukihide's sketches make him look way more handsome than in real life.

Yukihide was staring at his glass rather than at Kinnosuke and this left him confused—could Yukihide be disappointed that he wasn’t as handsome as his painting? He moved to the seat Inagaki had previously occupied, opposite Yukihide.

"Sorry, did I make a mistake, so you won't want to talk to me?"

The guy in front of him shook his head, eyes flashing panic, “No. You didn't do anything wrong."

“Oh, thank goodness. Anyway, we have a lot to talk about. About what happened to us and how to get our reflection back.”

Yukihide took out Imai's sister's mirror and showed it to Kinnosuke, "Do you still see my reflection?" he asked. Kinnosuke nodded. It was Yukihide's turn to look in the mirror and the reflection was still Kinnosuke's face. He took a deep breath, "I don't think we can get our reflection back."

Kinnosuke's brows furrowed. Why was it that easy for Yukihide to give up?

“You know, we have to work together to find a solution. You also want it too, right?" Honestly, Kinnosuke wasn't prepared for Yukihide's rejection as this also involved him. Although Yukihide's face was beautiful, it didn't mean that Kinnosuke was ready to lose her reflection every time he looked in the mirror, "We have to help each other."

“You seem so eager to get rid of my reflection quickly.”

"Ah, n-no, that's not what I meant—I," Kinnosuke didn't know what to say but suddenly he realized something. His face flushed red and a silly smile on his lips, “Does it mean do you want to see my face all the time?” He scratched his head.

Yukihide was taken aback by Kinnosuke's unexpected words, “No, no. I don’t mean it like that. Well then, let's find a way out together."

He extended his hand toward Kinnosuke. He meant to shake hands with him but Kinnosuke hooked their pinkies instead.

"Promise?"

Stuttering, Yukihide replied, “Yeah, okay.” He had only just met Kinnosuke but he didn’t know why he was so nervous. He had never been like that before.

Kinnosuke suddenly brought his face closer to Yukihide and made the latter slightly back away. He then whispered something, “Yukihide-san, I want to ask you something. It's a little  bit embarrassing.” Hearing the word 'embarrassing', Yukihide's heart skipped a beat, “Uhm, did you see my… you know my lower part? I don't dare to take shower in front of the mirror. I'm afraid I'll accidentally see yours.”

“Y-you?!” Yukihide was really embarrassed. His cheeks flushed red, “Why did you ask this kind of question? Of course not!"

Kinnosuke sighed in relief. He was quite worried that his reflection would be used for indecent things but it seemed that Yukihide was more innocent than he thought, although he was older than Kinnosuke.

They talked for quite some time, but it was Kinnosuke who did most of the talking. He tried to understand Yukihide's silence. Maybe he couldn't get along with someone he just met so easily. They had exchanged cell phone numbers to make it easier to contact each other. He was happy because he wasn't alone in this weird situation. Most of the time, they weren't talking about the mirrors at all. Instead, they were talking about each other. Yukihide finally knew Inagaki was Kinnosuke's best friend.

“So all this time, Inagaki has been busy calling and texting you? Did he tell you to come here?” He huffed then crossed his arms in front of his chest.

As if caught hiding a big secret, Kinnosuke bit his lip, “Uh, sorry, Yukihide-san. Please don't blame Inagaki. He just wanted to help me. That's all. I was at your campus, looking for you but you are here with Inagaki.”

Yukihide tried to suppress his giggling, “You were looking for me on campus? It's like looking for a needle in a haystack."

“I shouted your name on the campus radio. But that petite campus radio announcer punched me in the face.”

"You must be joking." Yukihide's laughter grew louder, “Sato punched you in the face? I never knew he could be so cruel.”

He pursed her lips as he held his bruised cheek, "Yes, your friend is cruel."

Yukihide held out his glass which still had a few ice cubes left and placed it on Kinnosuke's bruised cheek. He leaned back, surprised by the sudden chill, "You should put an ice pack or tomorrow it will swell." Yukihide said.

“I'm lucky that you have my reflection, Yukihide-san. Maybe if it were Inagaki, he would do something bad to this beautiful body of mine."

"Tsk! You're so confident." He purposefully pressed the glass so hard against Kinnosuke's cheek that the man screamed in pain, but the next second he laughed.
