It's not that he’s uninterested in having a serious relationship with someone. Daehwan just wants to man up his dignity rather than chasing some drabby love. Women tend to get misconception once they know he's a police officer.
The girls he encountered so far fled away after the first appointment. Or straight spit it on his face. Having a policeman partner means they'd be ready to live a dangerous life. And once they get married, they don't want to be left alone because police officers spend most of their time outside rather than being at home.
“You spend most of your time outside, right? If we’re married, I want my husband to spend time with me or the kids after he finishes working.”
“Even on the weekends, police would still work if there’s anything happening, right? Work is important, but family is the main priority.” Said another one of them he met after being introduced by Woorim’s acquaintances.
Moreover, his work field doesn't give him a chance to think deeply about any romantic relationships. He'd rather choose to dedicate his life to being the finest cop spending daily life solving mysterious cases already eating his brain out. Unwittingly, time goes by so fast that he's already in his late thirties.
“Detective Yeon, I think we should wrap it for today. We collect enough evidence, please bring them to the station. And give me report as soon as it’s out.”
“Very well, chief.”
Chief Park, who rarely got involved into the crime scene, was following him this early morning when they got a report from the local precinct in the dawn that some joggers found a decayed body floating by the river bank near XX Bridge. The body later identified belonged to a high school student belonging to one of the high schools in Gimpo. It’s bizarre how the corpse ended up far away in another area. Which led to hardly identifying how he died since his body had decayed approximately two weeks after the death.
Woorim didn’t follow him as usual for a reason, at the same time he got a call from a supermarket owner that saw some men involved in street fights in front of her store. The elder was worried they might cause vandalism that could harm her business. So they have to catch them and bring them all to the police station.
So today Daehwan drives Chief Park forth and back from the crime scene to the station. That old man has always had something to nag off. He actually doesn’t feel like it today. Daehwan has had a lack of sleep since a week ago. That’s that gang that went around the neighborhood harassing street food stall owners these days.
Besides all those things that happened in a day, he kept thinking about his encounter with Evelyn. Thinking how everything about her seemed uneven. From the start why she came up to the police station and asked to be interviewed at a closed room, an investigation room. How is the end of the case of the sibling quarrel video leaking? Then if she really can't speak Korean while she’s working as a chief manager, wouldn’t it be strange if a superior can’t communicate with their subordinates well? Even though when they met again she finally can speak in his language just fine.
Also, why did she wear only a shirt when she made a report and asked the police to come checking on her house for the break-in? Did she not expect anyone would show up there? The CCTV’s record showed none came or walked out from her apartment. But how and where could this intruder come from? And how can she be so assured that the intruder was a man? Not only that, she looked calm as someone whose house was just intruded even though she had the guts to tamper the evidence like she didn't care if the culprit would be caught or not...
“Hey, this punk... Are you going to keep ignoring me? Nevermind, pull off here. I’d better take a taxi on my way back if you’re going to be like this!” The chief woke him from his chain of thoughts about Evelyn.
“I’m sorry chief, I have something on my mind.” The chief sighs as he is unsatisfied with Daehwan’s answer.
“What’s got you so occupied I wonder.” He scoffed.
“I have something to ask. It’s because I’m just curious...”
“Nothing else.”
“So…” He clears his throat.
“Do you remember Miss Evelyn Yang that came to our station about months ago after she fought with her brother?”
The chief tries to remember, tilting a little and clicking his tongue. “Evelyn?”
“Evelyn Yang from The Yang’s Group?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“What’s the matter?”
“About that case, did her grandfather call our station asking us to investigate it by himself?”
He grunted at his questions, and seemed unpleasant. It reminds him why he was annoyed the whole of that day.
“You know, his grandfather is an important person in our area. He donated around 10 billion won to solve the case of a missing woman in a redevelopment area. That’s too much for a simple missing person. He only wants to have an alibi to put his finger around us.”
“Why?”
“Don’t you know? The Yang’s group isn’t naturally a start-up company similar to Bill Gates inspirational successful story. They built their empire from mafioso fundraising.”
“The cartel was originally located in Shanghai. However he made it and expanded his business to Seoul. That old sly wretch tried to pull a decent man's act. Start his own family and business in the pharmacy and shipping company. That was all just a cover up for the drug smuggling.”
“That’s why it’s natural for them, even though they are now rich and have it all. They want to lay under the blanket as low as possible. Nobody would believe it when they said they don’t do that shit anymore. The only son he had was under surveillance for sneaking illegal drugs to China using their trading company.”
“You mean the trading company where Miss Evelyn’s working?”
“Yes, that one.”
“But what’s the connection between them all?”
“You clueless dimwit!” He slapped Daehwan’s head.
“Argh, it hurts, chief!” Daehwan rubbed the back of his head grunting.
“Of course there is!” The Chief snuffled before continuing the story.
“He thinks his family is a hotshot that we need to cover up for any scandal related to their family. That’s why he called me himself, bossing me around to investigate the case.”
“You went there last week, didn't you? To her apartment? Is she still with that rude manner?”
Daehwan cringes as he’s remembering how mean and cold her treatment was to him. That degradation is unforgettable. Yet he kept thinking about her to the very day.
“That time the one who called wasn’t her grandfather but the eldest son. It just happened you’re the only one staying in the office so I just wanna send you there immediately before they cuss at me.”
“I already gave all that was needed to the evidence storage team. After that incident, they said there’s no intruder contact made anymore. Should I pay a visit there again, chief?” That last sentence just slipped his tongue. He felt like he just wanted to say it. Why does he want to meet that rude girl again? Nevermind.
“There’s no need. They’ll contact us soon if they need help. We should just focus on this one case. If the reporters got into it before we finished the case, the investigation won’t run smoothly and it’s harder to catch the suspects.”
“Got it, chief.”
Well whatever she might have under her sleeves. He won’t encounter that rude spoiled brat anymore in the future. Though actually Daehwan himself can’t deny her appearance it is hard to turn one’s back on.
Under his deep thought, the buzzing on his phone startled him.
"Detective Yeon! We found something, there's an SD card found near the river bank. But it was all covered in mud. I'll bring it to the station now." Someone sounded explaining an unexpected detection.
The forensic team that was preparing to wrap up in the location discovered another evidence when one of the evidence bags fell to the ground and one of them picked it up and found the mentioned items.
Daehean informed the chief and drove his car faster to their police station.
