Nobody’s POV :

The Shadow world was always divided into different factions and these factions include : Shadowhunters , Werewolves , Vampires and Witches .But every person who was born into these different factions knew that the factions could never mix as it would become a battlefield covered in bodies and blood . Any person that fell in love with another from a different faction would be slaughtered and the family name would be tarnished , every person would look down upon any person from that family .

Centuries on that rule became a law and it would be followed by everyone and if it wasn’t followed it meant death . But one family was an exception and they were known as the Shadowbloods . Why you might ask , Well they were involved with wolves and witches and the outcomes were abominations . The Shadowbloods were not looked down upon by anyone even though they broke the law of mixing factions .

This is a story about how a hybrid fights back against their family to protect what they care about .

Emilia’s POV

I dislike everything about the shadow world including the shadowhunter laws because they're pointless. I especially hate the one about mixing factions , like who the hell cares about what you do with your life cause I don’t . Oh I never introduced myself. My name is Emilia Shadowblood and I am a hybrid. I have a twin brother called Skyler and he is also hybrid like me. We're both nineteen years old and we live in Brooklyn, New York . Skyler has a parabatai whereas I don’t because nobody interests me .

‘’ Mila , Mila , Mila ,Mila’’ Sky said, shouting at me.

‘’ What Sky , What’s wrong with you? ‘’ I said before rolling my eyes at him .

‘’ Have you picked someone yet for the parabatai ceremony? ‘’ He said while taking a seat beside me on the sofa that was situated at the foot of my bed .

‘’ OMG Sky , No I haven’t and I don’t intend to because as I’ve said before nobody in this institute interests me ‘’ I said while standing up and grabbing my phone from my bedside locker .

‘’ Mila , You have said that to me for the last nine years and you haven’t changed your mind once ‘’ He said while standing up and joining me at the threshold of my room door .

‘’ Well it’s not my fault that you keep asking ‘’ I said while making my way through the living room towards the front door .

‘’ Wow Mila , I was only trying to help you , that is what a twin is for ‘’ He said while stepping out of my apartment .

I locked the front door and made my way down the stairs to the main reception of my apartment complex with Skyler hot on my heels , You may wonder why I live in a apartment complex full of mundanes instead of the institute that is full of people like me , well I hate the attention that my brother and I get because we are Shadowbloods . We walked out of the apartment complex to be met with Valerian who is our cousin and not a hybrid. Valerian is a full shadowhunter and he is the leader of the SQUAD which I am a part of due to being a hybrid . Valerian also has a parabatai which adds to the pressure of getting a parabatai for myself .

‘’ Mila , Skyler , I have word from our family in Idris ‘’ He said while walking beside Skyler and I .

‘’ What is it Val , What could possibly be important for them to send you to tell us ‘’ I said while taking out my phone to check the headlines .

‘’ Easy Mila, that's no way to talk to your boss but I will let it slip as we are not in the institute right now and also because you are my cousin ‘’ Valerian said . I just simply rolled my eyes at Valerian’s statement and Skyler told Valerian to proceed with his information .

‘’ Our parents want us back in Idris to help defend the borders , apparently rogue wolf packs and vampire clans are attacking and slaughtering innocent shadowhunters during night patrolling hours ‘’ He said while coming to a stop.

Even though we were glamoured with our invisibility rune , which hid us from mundanes , downworlders could still see us and standing in the middle of the street was not a good idea considering the fact that we are all Shadowbloods .

‘’ Rogue packs and clans have always attacked the borders for centuries. Why does our family need us back now? They sent us away for a reason ‘’ I said while looking around the street .

‘’ I don’t know Mila , Your parents didn’t say the exact reason of why they want us to return , But we must leave tonight ‘’ Valerian said while looking between Skyler and I .

‘’ Whatever , I don’t care , I will see ye later tonight then ‘’ I said before turning around to walk down the rest of the street .

I only turned the corner when I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket and I didn’t have to guess who it was . I stopped walking and took my phone out of my pocket see a message from Valerian which read :

V : Squad briefing at 1 , be there on time .

E: When have I never been on time Val .

V: I wasn’t directing that at you Mila , did you forget this was the squad group chat .

Oh Shit , Valerian was right, this was the group chat that he messaged on , Oh well what is said is said , I can’t take it back now. I was about to put my phone back in my pocket when it vibrated again . I looked at the chat and it was the other members commenting on what was said between Val and I .

M : Grab the popcorn. A fight is about to kick off between the boss and Mila . Ry : I wish I could grab a snack but I’m not at the institute. I'm out getting a coffee from starbucks , but do carry on with your scraping guys .

V : Nobody is fighting you idiots , I don’t even know why I made ye part of the squad to be honest .

M : Ohhhh Val , Don’t be like that , you made us a part of the squad because we are Mila’s besties .

E : Excuse me , when were we ever best friends , To be honest Val has a point why are ye in the squad .

M : Mila how could you , I thought we were closer than that .

E: This is exactly why I tolerate Rainier more than any of ye .

Rain : Thanks Mila , I’m thrilled to know that you only tolerate me .

V : Can we get back to the matter of hand

Ry : What’s the matter Val , are you jealous that Mila gets on better with your parabatai than with her own cousin .

V : Watch it Ryder , keep talking and you will no longer be in the squad.

Ry : Okay I will stop talking now .

V : Good , The briefing will take place in the courtyard of the institute .

M: Got it boss , I will be there

Ry: Same here boss

Rain : Boss

E : Whatever you say Val .

I turned off my phone and I put it back in my pocket. I was about to start walking again when someone walked into me and I knew it couldn’t have been a mundane and I was right . When I looked down towards the ground ,I saw a raven hair coloured boy with blue eyes. I sensed that he was a downworlder , but which one ? . The boy stood up and brushed the dirt from the back of his pants before grabbing his bag that he had dropped from the impact of the fall . The boy looked at me before he tsked and walked away. I turned and watched the boy walk into the distance and out of my sight before I continued my way towards the institute .

………20 minutes later ….

I arrived at the institute which was three blocks away from my apartment and when I stepped inside I could feel everyone’s eyes on me and now you know why I hate it here. Every Shadowhunter here looks at me like I am some god or in our case an angel . It’s because I’m part werewolf and Skyler is part witch , so we have a mix of angel and demon blood in our veins . We can bear the runes because we are part shadowhunter , but we are also gifted in other ways due to our other side . Some Shadowhunters in this institute hate our guts but they have no choice but to put up with us , when I mean ‘’us’’ , I mean me . I don’t give a shit about anyone here and everyone here knows that .

Instead of overthinking the situation any further , I simply made my way towards the training area where I was met with Locien , Skyler’s parabatai. Locien was somebody that I was friends with , not because he is my twin’s parabatai , it’s because I know that Locien will protect Skyler when I can’t . I also like Locien because he didn’t look at Skyler and I like the other shadowhunters. He saw the true us and not our hybrid self .

‘’ Mila , how are you today ? ‘’ He said while taking a seraph blade off the weapons shelf .

‘’ I’m good Locien , but I could be better ‘’ I said while placing my stuff on the nearest bench .

‘’ You want to spar today , I’ve got a lot of energy to burn ‘’ He said while practising his fighting stances .

‘’ Sure , just let me choose my blade and we can start then , oh and just to remind you don’t be a sore loser ‘’ I said while smirking at him .

‘’ Ohh but I won’t be the sore loser , you will ‘’ He said while smirking back at me .

‘’ We’ll see won’t we ‘’ I said while getting into my fighting position .

………..45 minutes later…….

Exhaustion wasn’t the word to describe what Locien and I were feeling right now , Locien and I sparred 16 rounds and he wasn’t willing to lose and nor was I . Halfway into our sparring Skyler and some of the squad came into the training area and sat down on the benches opposite from where we were sparring . When Locien and I came to the realisation that both of us were not willing to lose , we decided to call it quits as we were extremely exhausted . I laid down on the floor to help try to cool me down , but due to the fact that I was half wolf it wasn’t easy , body heat was natural for me . I never have to wear a padded jacket as I don’t feel the cold and most shadowhunters are envious of that .

In between cooling down I could hear chatter coming from Skyler , Locien and the Squad .

‘’ Ahhh man , I thought Mila would beat Locien and not let him win , but I thought wrong ‘’ A voice said , who I recognised straight away that it was Ryder .

‘’ Ahhh and I thought you learned to not make assumptions Ry ‘’ I said while sitting up .

‘’ You did well Mila , you never fail to impress me ‘’ Locien said with a genuine smile on his face. Instead of saying anything I just smiled back at Locien and I knew that I had made the greatest mistake because Ryder let out a gasp of shock .

‘’ Mila , You never smile at me , Why are you so cruel? ‘’ He said with a pout on his face .

‘’ Ryder, I seriously worry about what age you think you are. You're acting like my younger brothers and to be honest they are more mature than you ‘’ I said while walking over to the bench to stand in front of them .

‘’ Did you just compare me to your younger brothers , Mila, that's an insult , I thought we were friends ‘’ He said while placing his hand over his heart .

‘’ Ry , were acquaintances not friends ‘’ I said with a sly smirk on my face , I knew that this statement would get Ryder going , But before he could , Valerian and Rainier walked into the training area .

‘’ Great, all the squad are here , we can start the briefing earlier than I had planned too ‘’ Val said while walking towards us with Rainier .

‘’ Locien and I will leave , we have reports to sort out before we hand them up to the head of the institute ‘’ Skyler said while walking away with Locien .

Valerian just nodded and when Skyler and Locien had disappeared from our sights , Valerian turned back to us and informed us about the briefing .

‘’ Today’s briefing is about returning to Idris for two weeks. We have a mission to complete and this involves all of us ‘’ Valerian said while making eye contact with all of us .

‘’ What does the mission involve Valerian? '’ Matteo asked .

‘’ Inquisitor Shadowblood wants us to eliminate the rogue packs and clans , as they keep attacking the border of Idris ‘’ Val said .

‘’ What the hell , Val there’s only five of us , there could be a hundred of them . We can’t take them on ‘’ Ryder said in disbelief .

‘’ Listen we won’t be doing this on our own , we will have back up when needed , we will be fine , this isn’t the first time that we have had to eliminate people ‘’ Valerian said .

‘’ This isn’t just someone on their own Val , it’s an army of rogues , We could be slaughtered before we even do anything ‘’ I said while looking at him .

‘’ We are the only people who can do this mission , all of us are more skilled than the average shadowhunter and no offence Mila , we have you on our side.’’ Valerian said while looking at me as well as the others .

‘’ Your kidding right , Val, did you forget that I am part wolf, meaning , my wolf side hates slaughtering one of its own , Just because I’m a hybrid doesn’t mean I’m going to kill innocent lives ‘’ I said before moving over to the bench that my stuff was on .

‘’ Are you going to help us or not Mila ? ‘’ Valerian said with a demanding tone .

‘’ I don’t have a choice do I , I’m out of here , I can’t be listening to the fact that we are going to be killing innocent people ‘’ I said before grabbing my stuff and walking out .
