Joonyoung’s been bustling about at Evelyn’s apartment earlier in the morning. She hasn't even brewed her morning coffee yet. But that young man undrawn all the curtains and vacuumed the house. Making breakfast and tidying up. It also seems like he’s unbothered by the feeling she might feel uncomfortable or not by his presence. They just do things by themselves.
“What are you doing here?”
“Doing things.”
“Where’s Mrs. Kim?” Evelyn asked him why her maid isn’t coming today.
He answered that she’s doing errands for tonight's dinner at her grandpa's house.
That reminds her, tonight Evelyn will gather again with her family at the grandparents’s house in Hapan-ri, it’s the second time since she came to Korea. Yesterday, Chairman Yang called at lunchtime and invited everyone to eat dinner by Saturday night. So Joonyoung asked a stylist to prepare her a simple dress. Because he knows Evelyn won’t bother to think about what dress she would choose tonight.
“What do you want to wear? They’ll send it here in an hour.” Joonyoung scrolled through his phone screen looking for outfits prepared for her.
“Anything is fine.”
She’s been focusing on her laptop reviewing meeting materials for next Monday.
“I know you’d say that. I’ll choose for you then.”
“Okay.” She is still unbothered which got him slightly annoyed.
“I’m just trying to do my job here, okay?”
“Can’t you show any expression of gratitude, at least?” He’s contempted to her short answer.
She kept no response and fixed her eyes on the laptop. LIke it’s not a secret that Shin Jooyoung was put beside her as a secretary to keep an eye on her moves. That’s why she’s nonchalant to his presence.
Who in the world has a position as a Chief Manager would have a personal assistant that always muck around the schedules even on the holidays. She knows that the father and grandfather can’t fully put their trust in her yet. They think of her as a spoiled kid who’s been spending family’s money doing fancy things just to clown around.
Night’s come. A private driver was sent by the afternoon. In the end, a simple blue light dress with a pair of heels and a plain white clutch were chosen. Loathing to attend the unwanted event, she took her time to sleep a little since Joonyoung couldn't stop squawking that day which was exhausting for mentality. The trip there took one and a half hours which was long enough to get some good shut eyes. Once in a day, it would be nice if she could strap duct tape into his mouth and tie him up in a chair so he could stay still and shut up for a day at least.
“We arrived, Young Miss.” said the driver selectively waking her up.
The big gate was far from the entrance, guests should drive in closer to the mansion, which had a European style exterior. Its white painted window frames all over it and dark shingles has a front and side porch and stairs to the front door. That house has its own history, it’s a house where everyone grew up, including his father. So there’s no intention of them to sell or leave it abandoned even though everyone’s moved to Seoul, including his father and step mother. Since only one person remains living in that big mansion and was the oldest, the rest of the family members choose to give in and gather there once in a while.
“Oh, you came?”
As soon as she comes down from the car, a young man with a pair of casual dining outfit approaches her from the next car that’s also just arrived.
“Not like I want it.”
He chuckled, “Hey don’t be like that, meanie.”
That gentleman wraps Evelyn by the shoulder and walks inside the house together followed by the maids. They open the door for the young miss and mister and take off their coats then lead them straight to the dining room.
“Master is already waiting inside, young master, and so are your parents.”
“Very well. Thank you.”
Dining starts with the maid bringing in some main dishes, and beverages. There's a formal greeting for grandparents and parents from the younger members. They had a little talk while waiting for all serving’s done.
“Are you serious about settling in that villa?” The grandpa asked Evelyn about her plan to renovate a house that she just bought at the outskirts of the Gapyeong-gun. That house was just half an hour from her grandfather's and located near his golf club.
She cleanses her palate by drinking the water at the side before answering him.
“Not yet grandpa, I need to get my residential ID card first so I can make a purchase of it.”
“It’s already been months. If you don’t bother to administer it, I guess you don’t really have full intention to live here.”
Her father cut in before she could continue. His stiffening supposition indicated he’s unsatisfied with the answer.
“I apologise, father.”
“I’ll take care of it quickly.” She begged for a pardon, not trying to get in trouble.
Having minor interactions with family members is the best decision to make while being there. It turned out, except her big brother, everyone was vigilant of her existence in the gathering. Then why bother to invite her over?
Evelyn wouldn’t get affected by their dominance. The refusal of being looked down just because she’s an additional member of the family makes her hold one's own. They’re the ones who wished for her presence. Well, not everyone. Two people are clearly looking at her as an eyesore right now. The rest have their own reasons to bring her over to tonight’s meeting.
For the grandpa, Evelyn is the only female descendant. And this reminded him of his wife. Evelyn’s grandmother has long passed away. So Chairman Yang builds upon her that she would also live in Hapan-ri to accompany him. He even thought about arranging marriage for her already so that she could stay there with her husband and join him in the same housing.
Rather than being on the same roof with this crafty old man, buying a second-hand villa-house nearby resolves the spectacle. As she has her own premise considering an open place to raise the cat. That unusual one creature that is on her main excuse to have another house far from the city. It needs a bigger natural green environment to grow up. Because that’s what its origin habitat was. The problem is just that it's too far from Seoul. It's a hassle to travel back and forth on the weekdays to the company. So she’s taking time to make a decision.
And the father Daniel Yang, the director of Yang Pharmacy wants his only daughter to take care of the family business rather than being a free traveller wandering around spending family money with no occasions. With her graduating from a prestigious doctoral university in Quebec for double degrees as biochemist and neurologist, it would match the goal of the company to use her skill for the best. But to put her instantly in a high position at the company would tarnish its image. So he wants his daughter to learn one or two things before she could climb up the important positions.
Lastly, the older brother. It’s more like a sentimental reason rather than logical ones. When their father asked him to pick up Evelyn in Canada. They talked about many things, just to make him find out Evelyn’s just lost her younger brother. She changed a lot after the incident. So that must be a hard time for her. Even though they just met a few times, even when Jiyeon studied in America, he already grew quite fond of her since she’s the only female sibling he has. And that strengthens his reasons to convince Evelyn to live with them in Korea rather than being alone in Canada.
Well, Evelyn has treated him with a cold shoulder since younger. Jiyeon was desperately looking for her attention at first. But then he learned that’s how Evelyn acts toward everyone. Expressionless and nonchalant, which he found cute. While on the other side, his sister thinks of him as a disturbance that won’t leave him alone. Even after they grew up. As right now, he eagerly took place beside Evelyn’s seat. She glances into him a moment and then sits on her chair apathetically.
“Jiyeon, when will ST company’s items be sent?” Mr. Yang checked on Jiyeon about the progress of the deal made last week. That kind of conversation is basic to the occasion. Business talk follows everywhere, even to the dining table.
“The agreement is not closed yet.”
“The RnD team is still developing the specifications they’re proposing. The effect of the medicine already showed up on the test subjects. The ST company wants us to bring up the samples for them next month so that they can finalise the agreement.”
“Why take so long?”
“Well, medicine redevelopment can’t be done in a night. Scientist is not an overnight job, father. We should do it accurately.”
“It's just some old components that have been recycled with renewed functionality. Ask them to shorten the research. If they can make it to one week that’d be better. They’re a potential company. Keep a grip on them, Jiyeon.”
“Understand, father.”
“Hayeon, what about you? Have you prepared for transferring position yet?”
Evelyn’s younger brother flinches to hear their father mention his name, he has been quiet since the dining started. His mother was also shocked that Mr. Yang mentioned that incident again at the family dinner. She gives her husband an unbelieving look while holding her steak-knife hanging on the plate. Hayeon laid low in actions since the scandal of abusing Evelyn leaked to the public eyes. Their parents went apeshit. Especially Mr. Yang, he almost hit that young boy with a golf stick.
