But even princes and princesses feel curious, and so many nights after dinner, the three oldest found themselves sneaking into the nursery to watch the three small creatures that had shaken their perfect world.
And they continued to sneak. And continue to watch. As the triplets ate solid food for the first time, they watched. As the triplets first sat up, they watched. As the triplets stood for the first time, they watched. But watching soon became boring.
Joshua was the first to hold his siblings' tiny hands. To help them each stand up. To clap for them with each accomplished stand. His life had been a repeat. But Kaleb had never truly interacted with the triplets. He was the first.
Elizabeth was next. She was the perfect rose. The beauty among her two brothers. The perfect rose was a lonely part to play. But a new flower had been added to the garden. And so she danced with the toddlers. She laughed with the toddlers. She smiled at Joshua.
Kaleb continued to watch. He smiled from afar. He cheered silently. His siblings could break from their parts but he couldn’t. He was the firstborn. He had to be perfect no matter what. No matter how much he wished to join. No matter how much he wished to take the sides of all five of his siblings. But he couldn’t. He was perfect. So Kaleb stopped watching.
