A decade ago, the mountain Kingdom of Arkos lost its independence to the Empire of Veturia. After the fall of the kingdom, Ira, the younger prince of Arkos, lives in hiding while the Empire occupies his homeland. Despite several failed past rebellions, Ira desires to devote his life to one last rebellion with his elder brother, with the fate of their kingdom in the balance. When a small Arkosan town is visited by Veturian soldiers, Ira is forced out of hiding, now armed with powerful new magic from his patron god, placing him on a collision course with a Veturian legate, Aviana va Albacorus, with whom he develops a tempestuous connection. While the drama of war plays out on the world stage, the mysterious nature of gods and magic lurks beneath.
Godchains, an arrangement resulting from an ancient accord with the gods, grant all people the use of some magic. In exchange, all people are bound to adhere to an oath particular to them, and only suffering and death await should they break it. Certain individuals, called Favored, are granted powers far beyond that of a normal person, and are thought to be chosen by the gods for divine purposes.
