The park rented out camping spaces, RV hookups, vendor spaces, and charged admission to the park. The funds from the festival were used to maintain and update the park for the entire year. Scarlett was afraid that the news of the rapist in the park would decrease the number of people attending. Over 200,000 people visited the park the weekend of the festival.
Scarlett enjoyed the weekend with her family at the festival. The children looked forward to it every year. After the weekend was over it was time to return to work. No one had been raped during the festival. Scarlett decided to visit Ms. Daisy. Ms. Daisy invited Scarlett in to have a cup of tea. While sitting at the table, Ms. Daisy, began telling her she was worried about Susan. Susan had been working late and was very tired. Ms. Daisy wanted Susan to go to doctor but she refused. Scarlett agreed to talk to Susan and determine what was wrong with her.
Scarlett talked to Susan. Susan worked at the Ruby Night Club. Susan told Scarlett Brook was her friend. She heard a group of men the night club talking about the rape. The believed that Brook deserved being raped. She was stripping every night at the club teasing the men.
Susan confided in Scarlett that she wanted to
quit working as a stripper, but she would not be able to afford the medicine
that Ms. Daisy needed. The medicine for the Ms. Daisy was taking cost more than
$1500 a month and she would have to take it for the rest of her life. If Ms.
Daisy missed even one dose of the medicine increases the chance of having a
reflection of the kidney. Daisy’s life depended on the medicine.
Susan could not tell Ms. Daisy how she was feeling and made Scarlett promise that Ms. Daisy would never find out she was working in the strip club. Ms. Daisy though she was attending school and working long hours to attend college. But the truth was Susan was working two jobs to take care of Ms. Daisy’s medical needs.
Scarlett is awakened with the spirit of Joline standing at the foot of her bed. Joline is a fifteen-year-old virgin that was raped. Joline began to tell Scarlett what happened to her. She was at home in her bedroom studying for a test by candlelight. Mr. Goodman in his forties that lived across the field raped her. Goodman waited on the edge of the farm until Joline’s father and mother had gone into town for a church meeting. He came into her bedroom and raped her. Joline was a virgin and was afraid to tell anyone. Months later Joline became extremely sick in the morning. Her mother took her to doctor for an exam. Joline was pregnant. When they arrived home and told her father. He was furious. Joline then told him she was raped.
Joline was not pledged to be married. Goodman was required to pay her father fifty shekels of silver. Goodman was forced to marry her because he had violated her. Goodman could never divorce her. A shekel is an ancient Near Eastern unit of weight. It was first a currency in ancient Tire and ancient Carthage and then in ancient Israel under the Maccabees. The modern currency unit used in the State of Israel today is officially known as the Israeli new shekel. Joline died during childbirth.
Then Susanna appeared to Scarlett. Susanna would go into her husband’s garden to walk, two elders used to see her every day and they began to desire her. They perverted their minds and turned away their eyes from looking to heaven or remembering righteous judgments. Both were overwhelmed with passion for her and did not tell each other. Both men departed and returned and confesses to each other their lust. Then they arranged for a time when they could find her alone.
Susanna wished to bathe in the garden for it was extremely hot. The two elders hid themselves and were watching her. She instructed her house cleaner to shut the garden doors so she could bathe. When the house cleaner had left the two elders rose and ran to her. The elders said, “Look the garden doors are shut and no one can see us, we are in love with you; give your consent and lie with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and therefore you sent the house cleaner away.” Susanna signed deeply and said, “I am hemmed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death for me; and if I do not, I shall not escape your hands.” Susanna chose not to do it because she did not want to commit a sin in the sight of the Lord.
The next day when the people gathered at the house of her husband the two elders came, full of their wicked plot to have Susanna put to death. The people sent for Susanna. She was a woman of great refinement, and beautiful in appearance. She was veiled, the wicked men ordered her to be unveiled, that they might feed upon her beauty. Her family and friends and all who saw her wept.
Then the two elders stood up in front of the people and laid their hands upon her head. The elders said, “As we were walking in the garden alone, this woman came in with a house cleaner, shut the garden doors, and dismissed the house cleaner. Then a young man, who had been hidden, came to her and lay with her. We saw this wickedness and ran to them. We saw them embracing, but we could not hold the man, for he was too strong for us. She would not tell us who the young man was. The people believed the elders and condemned her to death. After they were examined, and an investigation into all the facts took place, the elders were convicted of bearing false witness. Susanna was innocent and the elders were put to death for bearing false witness against her. Scarlett knew that Brook had been raped and justice must be severed.
Scarlett received a phone call from Colonel Andrews requesting her to report the hospital. Holly Williams a college student was in the emergency room. Holly was distraught, agitated, and crying. When the nurse attempted to talk to her to find out what was wrong, she started sweating, trembling, and her heart was racing. She started vomiting and having chest pains. The doctors determined that she was having a panic attack when questioned by the nurse. The doctor prescribed a mild medicine to calm her down.
Scarlett arrived at the hospital and Holly was acting disorientated. Scarlett asked her simple question, and she could not answer them. When asked if she wanted a glass of water Holly responded, “I don’t know.” Holly wanted a rag to wash her hands. When she was given a wet rag, she continuously washed her hands. Scarlett noticed that Holly’s hands were turning red from being rubbed so hard with the washcloth. Scarlett took the washcloth away from her and Holly continued to act like she was washing her hands. Holly was obsessed with washing her hands.
The Emergency Room Doctor recommended that Holly be evaluated by a psychologist. When the psychologist walked into the room Holly began screaming “Please do not hurt me! Please do not let him kill me! Someone please, please, I need help!” Tears filled Scarlett’s eyes as Holly begged for help. They knew she had been through a traumatic experience. They had no idea what had happened to her, and she could not tell them. Scarlett assumed she had been raped. Her clothes were torn. Holly would not let anyone touch her. The nurse and doctors could not examine her. When a man walked near her, she started screaming.
Holly became medicated and fell asleep. Scarlett instructed the nurse to notify her as soon as Holly awakened. Scarlett knew Holly needed psychological evaluation. Scarlett wondered if she would ever be able to tell them what happened. Scarlett went to the park to see if she could find any evidence. The other rapes occurred in the park and this one did also. When Scarlett arrived at the park it was filled with college students. Scarlett recognized members of the Fraternity that she saw in the déjà vu experience.
Scarlett knows that the boys were trying to find the rapist. She talked to Tommy that was walking in the park. Tommy was a member of the Fraternity. The Fraternity was walking in the park to keep an eye on the college girls. Scarlett asked Tommy “Do you knew Holly Williams?” Tommy responded “She is my girlfriend I was supposed to meet her, and we were going to walk in the park together. She never showed up.” Scarlett told Tommy that Holly was in the hospital. Tommy immediately started saying, “I will kill him, I will haunt him down if he hurt Holly. I will not stop until I find him. The police better get him before I do.” Tommy took off running toward his car. Scarlett knew Tommy was headed to the hospital. She hoped that Holly would tell Tommy what happened.
When Tommy entered the hospital room, Holly was asleep. Tommy loved Holly and did not leave her side. Tommy stayed at the hospital with her until she woke up. Holly saw Tommy and started crying. Holly calmed down after seeing Tommy was someone she knew. Tommy held her in his arms and promised to protect her. Tommy promised to never leave her side. After weeks of therapy Holly confided in Tommy what had happened on that tragic afternoon. Holly was walking in the park, and she heard someone screaming in the bushes. Holly walked over to the bushes and a man with a teardrop tattoo under his eye pulled her into the bushes and raped her. The teardrop tattoo would assist Scarlett to find the rapist.
Holly fell asleep and Tommy returned to the park. He was searching for a man with a teardrop tattoo on his face. Tommy stayed at the park until closing and did not see anyone with the tattoo. Tommy returned to the Fraternity house and told the member what happed to Holly. He provided them with a description of the man that raped her. The members of the Fraternity continued to walk in the park looking for the rapist.
Scarlett returned
home for dinner with her husband and children. It was movie and pizza night.
Family night was always special. Scarlett looked into the eyes of her girls and
could not imagine how it would feel if one of them had been raped. Scarlett
only hoped that Holly and the other girls would be all right. Being with the
family allowed Scarlett to escape the reality of her job. The movie was over,
and Scarlett put the children to bed. Scarlett and Brad talked for hours. Brad
was understanding of the emotional stress Scarlett was facing. The reaction of
Holly affected her more than the other rape cases. Scarlett saw how
psychological damaging rape could do. Her training did not prepare her for the
sight of Holly.
