If both peas hated each others guts and kept pestering the pea in the middle, of course.
I sat there staring out the window as they argued about... I honestly don't know at this point.
First it was just banter, then it was family connections, then it was pears (don't. ask.), and now uh...
Well, it's hard to explain.
"If both Merlin AND the primordial spirit had unlimited abilities pertaining to most elements, it's reasonable to speculate that they are one in the same!" Lux said, his friends cheering him on.
When did they get here??
"But the basis of your claim is invalid because Merlin has mentioned in many of his works the primordial spirit, hinting at the fact that it was alive and well, dead before he was born!" Aliki retaliated, receiving nods of approval from the witches and wizards she had gathered around them.
They continued this pointless argument until, as I expected, Aliki was crowned victor.
Lux pouted while Aliki collected her winnings.
Of course there was a bet.
"All right kid, let's see. What subject do you wanna lose to next?" Aliki asked, pocketing her money.
Lux sat down, exhausted. "I'm afraid there are no more subjects to be beat in, hag. I'm famished."
Aliki laughed.
"Come on Lux, we can't just argue with this old lady forever. What about that guy?" One of Lux friends said.
I was tempted to bite that badly manicured finger right off.
"I'm good." I said.
"Oh come on! Don't be a party pooper." Lux other friend complained.
Lux raised an eyebrow at me, smirking. "Very well. And since you're so adamant on not debating, I'll let you choose, good sir." He said.
Aliki nudged me. "I'll let you keep the money."
"Let's go kid." I said, sitting up. "You can choose, I don't want to."
"The Wyverns, then." He decided.
This cheeky little kid.
The crowd ooed around us.
I scowled.
"Bet you wish you chose now, huh?" Lux said proudly, laughing.
Aliki just looked confused. "But Yuka-"
I shushed her.
Everyone knew that very little was known about wyverns and creatures similar to it, such as dragons.
That very little was only documented and sold to rich mage families.
Lux had just called me poor in more ways than one.
But what he didn't know was that I had, in fact, gotten my hands on one of those books. It had been my favorite bedtime story.
"Finish the sentence. Wyverns have only been found in the region of..?" Lux asked
I feigned panic. "Ah.... Castumous?" I replied
Lux's triumphant smile faded a bit before returning in full force. "Er, correct! Good guess."
I smiled and the crowd applauded.
Aliki smiled as well, catching on.
Lux continued to quiz me on wyverns. I continued to make my "lucky guesses"
The crowd grew as Lux got more heated. He looked like a beet.
"The seventh wyvern of Silahshia?" Lux said quickly.
"The Warden, guardian of the original Core gem. Okay that one was common knowledge man. Running out of questions, little guy?" I huffed in response.
The crowd laughed softly at that.
Lux's friends scowled, patting him on the back.
The boy in question was about to ask another question, but an announcement came on.
"Those onboard, the destination of the Choosing venue approaches. Please prepare for slight crash landing. Thank you." Themcrew said, taking turns.
Slight what now?
Next thing we knew everybody said sliding around on the wooded deck of the airship, perfectly calm.
Aliki held onto me so I wouldn't slide away.
I didn't slide, but it felt like the little food I had in my stomach was going to.
Mage apprentice Yuka cannot stand having to stay inside, even if it is for his own safety. His aura rivals that of an Ancient level dragon, and therefore makes him a direct target for monsters and mages alike.
After years of avoiding it, Yuka and his master, Aliki, leave their home for the Familiar Choosing, an annual event where Apprentice Mages get their Familiars. But when something goes wrong at the Choosing, Yuka gets stuck with the responsibility of returning the Core Gems, the main sources of magic, and a Familiar he didn’t even want nor like.
